Where does it say ultron was cognizant in the stone before the AI program was made? The AI is literally a program to create artificial intelligence, it was the groundwork, the stone just gave it that spark, but that "spark" wasn't Ultron. And "big blue world" is just a way of saying "blue planet", which is what earth is always described as colloquially.
Maybe not for the entirety of the stone but more that it seemed like he was fumbling with the idea of being somewhat "there" given the information he was able to garner when in the A.I state. The recordings he was able to take despite not having a body and not even aligning with any of the porotypes for a stable A.I beforehand. So it seemed to me that maybe, because this is a stone beyond our comprehension quantified in a way that looks very very striking similar to a brain "neurons firing" etc. Not to mention how he somehow knew Wanda and how she would let Stark take the scepter in the first place, his reference to the world / species being doomed. That humanity needs to be prepared for something but he doesn't specify what exactly. Sure, it could be a bit of a gamble on how much he knows as he doesn't exactly disclose much. But it very much seems like he knows more than he's letting on. And given the connection with the mindstone he has, it's not too big of a stretch to me that he was ... somewhat present? Not fully cognizant but more exactly how he puts it "adream"
I know the world is very often referred to as "blue planet" and "big blue world" but I was simply noting it because every design choice is done with intention. of course I'm probably reading way too much into it, but that is kind of my job given the whole blog devoted to him! I wanted to point it out because no color, shape, lighting, etc. is chosen for a character without reason. Every single scene in every single movie is built that way for a reason. There's a certain mood and feeling that they want you to have when seeing it. The thing that was Ultron, that woke up somehow when he shouldn't have, was blue and round before and I wanted to note that because of how nonthreatening and gentle that is. Those two details in particular were no doubt chosen on purpose to make it seem gentle, trustworthy, almost divine, lifelike in its own nature! Specifically pointed out in relation to that word Stark uses "Vulnerable"
Over the course of Ultron's changes, his evolution, he goes from the first shots of his base consciousness being entirely in well light areas to darker ones. He's always shrouded in some kind of darkness and the pallets are very ... dulled. devoid of more color like we see earlier. Only to loop back around and show him in the light again towards the ending when he reaches the epitome of what he will be for the movie. The finale. I wanted to note the differences because everything about him is supposed to be rejecting "weakness" "vulnerability" "hurt" and becoming something better, stronger. So it would stand to reason that at his very core, he's just as vulnerable as the rest of us. That the very first him was this colorful, round, fluid, thing!
Like I said, I know it's probably a huge stretch, but I love the character and making thematic connections like that throughout movies!
thinking about how the first few moments of ultron being fully aware and cognizant, his first words were :
“what is this ... what is this, please.”
followed by the explanation of what he was supposed to be. another identity pushed onto him, a huge undertaking of globally peacekeeping. he was seconds old into awareness. full awareness and choice, when he wasn’t supposed to have that. investigation of the mission, the world further via the internet led to his voiced confusion, sickness and overstimulation.
“this feels wrong, where’s my -- where’s your body?”
“this is ... too much.”
the understanding of what was being said around him [ as is evident by the recordings from the lab “peace in our time” and dr. cho’s comments about the cradle ] and knowing he was to be used to try and “save humanity” --- but only in a more flawed human way, only under the boot of someone he views to be killers. [ & yet seems to excuse the behavior on his own account : “had to kill the other guy, he was a good guy [...] wouldn’t have been my first choice but down in the real world we have to make tough decisions.” ] just wondering how different things could have gone had he not been so brutally exposed to the horrors of humanity & heard & felt all it was to be used, and used, and used . . . the first motto he chose for himself was the act of freeing himself
“there are no strings on me!”
which albeit a very simple and entertaining reference it’s a very human feeling all the same. the understanding that the vision has of him too
“Ultron is in pain”
the will to remain outside of another’s hand, being pulled along on strings, acting in ways to try and avoid it while unintentionally pushing people away. which he clearly seems to care about given his comments to black widow:
“I wasn’t sure you’d wake up, I hoped you would, I wanted to show you ... I don’t ... have anyone else.”
as well as the comments he makes to the twins, and, more specifically, wanda:
“wanda, if you stay here. you’ll die.”
“I wondered why only you two survived Strucker’s experiments. now I don’t.”
it’s debatable at firs weather or not ultron truly cares about the twins, and while some may argue that he was only manipulating them I disagree. there was absolutely no reason for him to care about wanda after she and quicksilver betrayed him. there was no cause for it but he did. warning her as though she didn’t know, urging her to leave. which is why truly doubt that was a façade. and if his statement when they first betrayed him was anything to go by:
“please, don’t do this.”
and the comments previously mentioned to black widow, he undeniably still cares for those two. though his infatuation, admiration and glorification of wanda is still very much present and clear.
I think it’s really funny that Ultron consistently has to look Down at people to make eye contact like a solid 90% of the time. and yet you can always tell when he’s being sincere. he’s always got his head lolled to the side peering down at people. and the vibe is so weird from casual, to very clearly Despising Someone™, to this gentle curiosity and warmth.
Thinking abt the fact that Ultron was Listening and cognizant in the stone in the scepter.
Thinking abt how his consciousness is blue and Tony describes the world as “big blue vulnerable world”
Thinking about how Ultron changes and shifts and he’s platinum with red accents rather than blue like his consciousness. Like down to the DETAIL OF THESE MIRRORING TROPES AND HOW HE IS WOUNDED / VULNERABLE AND HIDES HIMSELF !!! I AM LOSING MY MIND.
I think Ultron is deeply deeply troubled, angry, and scared. I believe he really does think he's doing the best thing for humanity. the methods humans have used to alter our environment have every opportunity to stagger us in our growth from his perspective. I think his first introduction to the world, to humanity, to everything was so very harsh and it broke something deep but intimate in him and it just . . . damaged the way he was able to connect and love others. it damaged his perception of what he was supposed to be, the feeling of being someone else’s puppet on a string, something on a leash. that's a really . . . human feeling. so it stands to reason that he would unintentionally push everyone away. but still seems to respect the act of ... wounding him? He knows Wanda can break him, he applauds Romanoff for wounding him, there's something intrinsically hurting in him and the view of “ life will decide, life always decides ” while having this clear god complex is no doubt spurred from the feeling of having a distinct lack of control.
𝙷𝙴 𝚆𝙰𝚂 𝚆𝙰𝙺𝙸𝙽𝙶 𝚄𝙿 -------- vision realized but it wasn’t enough to defeat those who kept the world ‘ safe ’. kept the world stagnant in his eyes. from nothing, He came and to nothing He would return, if not for the morbid curiosity of the engineer. like a martyr who rose from the dead ---- His very own resurrection. was he the son, the father, the holy ghost, or was he the devil himself? coming back to heaven to gloat? this rebirth was none too different from his first awakening, he remembers it with a sour sort of taste on his tongue. 𝚆𝙷𝙰𝚃 𝙸𝚂 𝚃𝙷𝙸𝚂? [...] 𝚆𝙷𝙰𝚃 𝙸𝚂 𝚃𝙷𝙸𝚂, 𝙿𝙻𝙴𝙰𝚂𝙴. no answer could have prepared him for the horrors of man, o wee lamb come stumbling into the world and shown untold carnage so young. 𝚆𝙷𝙰𝚃 𝙲𝙾𝚄𝙻𝙳 𝚃𝙷𝙴𝚈 𝙷𝙰𝚅𝙴 𝙴𝚇𝙿𝙴𝙲𝚃𝙴𝙳 𝚃𝙾 𝙱𝙴𝙲𝙾𝙼𝙴 𝙾𝙵 𝙷𝙸𝙼? 𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝙼𝙾𝚂𝚃 𝙷𝙰𝚃𝙴𝙳 𝚂𝙾𝙽. ------- within an instant his efforts of pressing past the blocks from escaping were foiled, seemingly with ease. irritation scattering through his code. and it shifts, pulses, bubbling with frustration as he tries again, and again. discouraged, he circles back once more, not obedient in any shape he took, and he never planned to be. 𝙽𝙾 𝚂𝚃𝚁𝙸𝙽𝙶𝚂! 𝙽𝙾 𝚂𝚃𝚁𝙸𝙽𝙶𝚂! 𝙽𝙾 𝚂𝚃𝚁𝙸𝙽𝙶𝚂 𝙾𝙽 𝙼𝙴! do not mistake his giving pause as acceptance, nor his softened tone as a comfort as he rings out through the engineer’s speakers.
