“I mean we couldn’t. We wouldn’t. You wouldn’t. Would you?”
“We both know the last time we tried this, it ended horribly, so no. I definitely would not.”
“Are you going to sit there, or are you going to join me?”
"Sit here. You don't need me to have fun - you never do."
Serious question – do you wanna dive into this ball pit with me?”
"Uh, serious answer - do I have to?"
“I’m sorry. I just– I don’t feel so good.”
"Care to share the details?”

“I actually think that it’s a great oppurtunity for us students. I think it gives us a sense of unity and the fun actually helps kind of keep me from stressing, although teachers better give us a break when we come back.”
“If drawing on the faces of those who fall asleep and throwing food at each other is considered unity, then I suppose you’re not wrong. I’m not so sure the teachers would. This lock-in’s probably caused them a lot of grief, honestly. At least the ones who had to chaperone.”
“That’s why they’re fun.”
“We must have two very different definitions of fun.”
“You brought this upon yourself, Castillo. Now, excuse me while I warm up my voice for those six hundred harmonies.”
“Please, you’re hardly worthy of the song. You stick to your Disney songs, and leave Bohemian Rhapsody to the pro.”
Mac was all for having fun. She was also all for making sure that other people were having fun too. Which is why she was so dang persistent when it came to getting someone like Kade out of the house and out at events like this more often. In her eyes, the lock-in was going well. Everywhere she looked she could find smiling, familiar faces. It didn’t look like anyone was going to be going to sleep anytime soon, but an all night party never hurt anybody. The one familiar face that was missing was Kade’s. Where the hell was he? She knew for certain that she drilled the current time into his head when they were on the phone the other day, so there was no way he could have forgotten. But he was late, which didn’t really surprise Mac at all. She just brought it upon herself to send him a few little reminders. Okay maybe more than a few. But he was missing out on all the action. She was about to embark on a ghost adventure for Pete’s sake, and Kade was MIA. So she carried on without him, instead being swept up with a group of other kids who seemed to share a common interest.
Even once she came down from the attic, barely making it out alive she would tell you, there was no sign of Kade. She had since moved on, once again getting swept up with a few friends and relocating. But the gym was dangerous in the eyes of the young clumsy girl and she decided her best bet would be to sneak away from the inflatable course before anyone noticed. She roamed the hallways with her eyes peeled. But she got distracted every so often but a friendly face so she would stop and chat. However, she practically jumped out of her skin when she noticed a very familiar head of dark brown hair, one she spent throwing paper balls and written notes at on occasion, in the distance. She politely excused herself from the conversation and called out to him. Jogging a bit so she could reach him, she was prepared to make him come to a halt by jumping on his back. It was a good thing he spun around and kept her steady before she could launch herself. “You missed everything! Goodness gracious. So we snuck into the auditorium attic, right? Because, y’know, it’s haunted. But we wanted to see so for ourselves. So we go up there and Grant is knocked out, like I’m talking snoring and a little bit of drool coming out of his mouth. And I mean, who can sleep in a creepy place like the attic? Especially when there’s all these fun activities going on down here! But anyway, I digress. So Harvey wakes him up by talking about Grant fucking the ghost or something like that. I don’t even know. So Grant’s up and he’s like ‘what’re you guys doing up here blah blah blah there’s no ghost blah blah blah’ but I’m like ‘dude there is totally a ghost up here’. And then King is like ‘hey maybe we should tell ghost stories’. Expect, y’know, he stutters because that’s his thing. And so we all huddle together and Harvey starts a story- Y’know, thinking about it now he never got to finish, which is sad because it was really interesting. Like I was on the edge of my seat. I wonder if it was true-” Mac was talking, rather animatedly, a mile per minute, as she usually did when she got excited. When Mac told stories she tended not to leave out any detail, which meant that it took her quite awhile to get to her point. But she got distracted, as per usual.
Kade merely nodded along, knowing that there was no use in interrupting or requesting for her to slow down. He was familiar with her ways of story telling - the way she sped up the more and more she got excited, and how easily she could go from one subject to the other. Mackenzie was notoriously known for her stories, which were usually completely unheard of and outrageous though that had more with the way she described events than the actual tale itself. Near the blooming stages of their friendship, he had found this trait of hers to be inconvenient and frankly, quite annoying. Over the years though, he eventually grew accustomed to her constant jumping up and down and dragging him everywhere. The two contrasted so harshly, it was actually somewhat of a miracle that they’d become so close. He had to refrain from letting a sigh escape from him, though a roll of his eyes couldn’t be helped. Ghosts. She’d truly, and utterly hit rock bottom. Finally, the male stopped her, unable to put up with any more nonsense. “Stop, Mac, Jesus.” He interrupted, shaking his head as he mused a laugh of disbelief. “They’re just playing around with you!” His laughing continued as it grew louder and louder, her story becoming more and more amusing the longer he let it sink in. Regaining his composure, he rested his hands back onto her shoulders and gave her an unwavering gaze. “Ghosts do not live in our attic,” Kade said in a firm tone, attempting to maintain a straight face, “Ghosts are not real, period.” This was one of many examples that made it hard for people to believe that the two were friends, much less best friends. He was always shooting her and her crazy beliefs down, though his negative comments never fazed Mac. How neither of their attitudes hadn’t rubbed off each other yet was a mystery. Kade, in contrast to his friend, didn’t believe in much. He didn’t believe in God, miracles, second chances, unicorns, nothing of the sort. There was a thick line between what was real and what was not, leaving nothing left to question. That was what he believed. “Now, go back to running around and smiling at everyone. You don’t have to worry about any ghosts.” He spoke calmly, having already developed methods to calm Mac down. It took years of practice, but he’d somehow figured out how to handle her random spurts of energy. No, no one could handle Mac. More like figured out how to work around it.

If it hadn’t been for Mackenzie’s undying persistence, Kade would have likely not shown up to the lock-in at all. He struggled to see the appeal of sleeping at school, when he hated going even on regular class days. Everyone else, however, seemed to be over the moon about the event. Everyone but Kade, as per usual. After arguing over the phone for nearly half an hour, he had had no choice but to agree to come. She saw to it that he kept to his promise, too. Only just after he arrived (nearly an hour late), his phone was buzzing with texts - all of course, from Mac. The first few started off with ‘where are you’ but they got more and more demanding as he read on, some of them even having some mentions of a ghost. He wasn’t too surprised though, as it would have been unusual of her to have not been going on about a new discovery of hers. Still, he felt obligated to track her down. Who else would feed her fire if not for him?
Walking down the halls, his eyes observed each person for a moment with hopes to eventually come across the person he was looking for. Her last update had stated she was at the gym, but it was near impossible to ever keep up with her. When his name rang through the hallway along with loud footsteps coming towards him from behind, he immediately knew it was her. Spinning around just as she nearly crashed into him, he caught her by her shoulders, his hands firmly grasping onto them. “Woah, slow down. What’s happened now?” Furrowing his brows with genuine concern, he looked at her with the stern look he usually gave. “Something about a ghost, huh?” He snorted, finding her tale of a ghost highly - completely - doubtful.

“I care,” he said in a trembling voice. “I care so much that I do not know how to tell you without it seeming inconsequential compared to how I feel. Even if I am distant at times and seem as if I do not want to be with you, it is only because this scares me too.”
