We have an area of low pressure developing off the South Carolina coast line that will bring strong winds, rain, and snow to the Northeast. Satellite imagery depicts a fairly organized low with features showing lower level convergence and upper-level divergence. If this low occured in June, we would likely be talking about a subtropical system. However, the storm's development is something to note as hurricane season approaches during an El Nino year. #gspwx #scwx

We’ve just updated our winter storm information page. In an effort to improve our content, we’ve made some changes to the way our graphics appear as well as the coverage area.  As a reminder, these graphics are intended to illustrate the forecasting expertise that allows GEEnvironmental to respond weather related disasters. These graphics are produced as a courtesy and the data contained is for internal uses only. This information is not intended for the protection of life and property, and it should not be used in that capacity. Thursday- Saturday

Impactful winter weather is not expected during this time.

Sunday – Monday

A storm system is expected to pursue a southerly storm track across portions of the Southeast, early next week. Cold air in place across the region may support a snow, sleet, and freezing rain event over portions of the western Carolinas and NE Georgia as moisture associated with the system overspreads the region.

Tuesday – Thursday

Impactful winter weather is not expected during this time.

Additional Notes

There is a considerable difference in ECMWF/GFS model guidance regarding the track of the low pressure expected early next week. Model trends should be monitored for the potential of a significant snowfall event over portions of western NC.

Immediate preparations are unnecessary at this time.

Hazard Assessment

Light freezing rain along with areas of freezing fog will likely develop late Tuesday night through early Wednesday morning over the Upstate of SC and the foothills of NC.

Lingering moisture from Saturday evening rainfall will likely refreeze tonight as overnight lows fall into the low-20s. Watch for isolated icy spots on roads. Travel risks are expected to be minor, however.
