we love you, Carol.
I love analyzing scenes and wondering why characters are doing or not doings they are doing. Not just asking what are they feeling in this moment. And the ending of CH is so interesting. Sometimes I want to know if I am completely out of my depth and if others view it the same.
When Mark is at the door hands hovering over the pushbar it's like he is paralyzed. He's not choosing to stay and not making a grand romantic decision to turn away from Gemma toward Helly before she shows up. His body simply won't move toward the pushbar. Gemma is screaming. His name is filling the hallway and he looks at her through the window and then at the pushbar and his hands won't go there. Like his body already knows even if his brain fully doesn't.
And then Helly says his name and suddenly his body works again. So telling because names are one things innies have and there is something specific about what his name in Helly's mouth does to him physiologically that his name in Gemma's doesn't. His nervous system is almost wired to Helly. And also due to what the severed floor does to them as people and their existences as innies. Gemma saying Mark is calling to someone else. With Helly saying his name his body becomes available to motion again. The paralysis lifts. And the direction his body moves is toward the thing that made it feel real most recently....
And then Helly says his name once and suddenly he can move
it’s such a rich scene to analyze. here’s a portion of that scene from the script that i really like
i like what you said “like his body already knows even if he brain fully doesn’t.” feels so similar to the script saying “he’s torn, conflicted— but deep down knows what he wants.”
these kinds of bodily knowledge and muscle memory are so interesting when it comes to severed people. logically, mark knows that gemma must mean something to him. that she’s his wife out there. he’s been taught to be loyal to his outies decisions and respect them above all. but his heart calls for helly! it reverberates throughout his whole body, that feeling, that love. it’s so strong that it reached outie mark at the chinese restaurant. and it helps innie mark make this decision. he just physically can’t go through the door, his body won’t go.
“the paralysis lifts” that’s so good. such a great way to put it. maybe you should write a little character study on this scene. you have such a deep understanding and notice great things!!
and on his body just naturally moving towards helly omg 😭😭 it’s like he’s a compass and she’s his truth north ❤️ he’s just hardwired to go to her. always drawn to her no matter the circumstance, no matter how damning it is. their relationship is so complex but also very simply at the same time because really they just want to live together. that’s all. but it’ll be a long road to get there!!!
thank you @aphyllon for tagging me to post the last line i wrote in a project!
a bit late, but I finally got back in the doc last week. Freshly written? or one I have been toiling away at? either way it's for a 2x10 fic :)
He had never seen her in that shade of green before.
and
There’d been a point, before the OTC, when a glimpse of Helly disappearing around the corner toward the restroom in one had sent such an immediate and inappropriate urge to follow her that he’d nearly dropped his mug of freshly poured, and more importantly very hot coffee, down the front of his white shirt.
i assume most have been tagged but if not @lifeisourcause ?

I hope those reading this have a good day today, and that everyone they speak to is kind to them.

maybe it's each other. that'd be a hoot.
Crazy how many people want characters in fiction to speak and act like they’ve had 20 hours of intensive therapy. Could NOT be me I want these bitches fucked up insane
hi! hope i am not bothering, but what you reblogged was something that been on my mind for months and it's so interesting to see people picking it up so I hope you don't mind if I ramble :)
Trying to put in to words exactly is difficult, but Mark and Helly have such a specific way of communicating with each other. It's like people telling each other they're in love using the least direct language available. Helly is such a direct person and a force overall so the idea that she can be indirect with Mark might be new, but as her feelings grow for Mark then with him she becomes less direct when it becomes about vulnerable things. They communicate in such a side door way almost. Does that make sense?
He receives what she offers and responds in kind. That's what makes "you're easy to pretend to care about"perfect. it's him matching her level exactly. The real thing never arrives directly. It arrives through indirection, like a bit that's already running. Car wash coupons. The equator becoming a continent. The goats laying eggs. They build something absurd together and the feeling breathes inside it?
And then rarely the armor drops completely. "I wanna live with you." "I wish we had more time." "I'm nervous." "Me too." It's almost as if these moments land so hard because they're exceptions to the pattern both of them have built together. And they play into whatever the other person offers rather than redirecting. When she sets up the bit he follows it. When he deflects she doesn't push. There's like a quality of deep attentiveness underneath the surface of the joke and in that way they're both listening harder than they appear to be.
“they build something together and the feeling breathes inside it” ur literally cooking
I love how kind of shy and gentle their flirtation is in S1. Helly pushes him so hard everywhere else, but she doesn’t really challenge him on his feelings until “you pretended to care about me pretty well”, and even then, she’s hiding it behind a compliment.
And that’s why Mark S. doesn’t push Helena either — they’re gentle with each other, indirect about things that feel fragile. He can tell she’s not the same, that something has shifted, but he doesn’t push it because he cares about her and wants to let her tell him about it on her own terms.
Idk! Their lives down there are so harsh and regimented. The relationship is the only place they can rly play. Oh melly 😭
thank you for sending this!
