Observations from a rookie tabletop game developer: writing rules for a tabletop game requires a fundamentally different approach than designing a video game.
The rules of a video game are encoded in the computer program that runs it. The developer puts careful consideration into what the player is capable of doing in the game, and limits the possibility space to create a particular intended experience for the player. It is not necessary for the player to enact self-imposed rules to create the experience they want; the developer has done most of that work already, and the player need only explore what's possible.
In contrast, in a tabletop game, there is no computer program to automate the gameplay or limit the player's actions. It is completely up to the player to enact the rules of the game. The player learns the rules and becomes an active participant in upholding them. By that same token, there is no technical barrier to circumvent or modify any of the rules at the player's whim. In doing so, the player creates a new experience, for better or for worse.
This contrast in the way rules are enacted means that certain things are possible in video games that aren't possible in tabletop games, and vice versa. A video game, for example, can allow for RPG battles with an in-depth system of damage calculation that's intuitive to the player, but too complicated to work out by hand. A video game can also include mechanics that are hidden from the player, waiting to be discovered and understood through experience, which would be difficult to accomplish in a tabletop game where all the mechanics are plainly explained to the player by necessity.
On the other hand, a tabletop game lends itself better to imposing narratives onto gameplay; it's easier to draw a picture of your OC and use them as a game piece than to play them in a video game without a character creator. (If you know any more examples of things tabletop games can do that video games struggle with, please share! I'm kind of new to this scene)

I usually save free game recs for big roundup posts, but I'm making a special exception for Print Gallery of an Artist:

I think a modern Metroid-themed arena shooter with netplay would be really good. Metroid Prime Hunters was a solid concept and a great tech demo for the DS, but it was never gonna go far on that kind of hardware. Remake it for the Switch 2 or make a sequel. I'm holding out for Metroid Prime Hunters 2.

Didn't Mina the Hollower just come out? I really should play that...
I love video games, but I have a problem with getting hyperfixated on specific games, forgetting to try new ones, and failing to stick with them to the end. I gotta set aside some time just to try out new games! It's good for me!
new ask game send me a 🌻 and ill just tell you whatever the fuck i want

Do you think there's a Star Fox Adventures mod that lets you play as Krystal for the whole game? Asking for a friend (me)
So there is, but there isn't a fully voiced one that changes the story accordingly. Maybe that was too much to hope for.

They call it Animal Well, because, well, there's animal
Thinking about super smash bros melee. Specifically the singleplayer experience. When I was young, I went through the process of unlocking all the characters multiple times, and it was such a thrill every time. I only heard about all the esoteric unlock methods through word of mouth, and they felt like playground rumors, like I had access to some secret information. All the conditions you could meet to activate secret events in the singleplayer modes. Getting to see characters early in event matches before you unlock them (like Falco, who you could only fight while he was invisible, adding to the mystery).
On top of all that, melee was one of my first video games, so I didn't recognize most of the characters from their original franchises. Learning that they all had their own games and their own lore behind them felt like getting a peek into a bunch of new and exciting worlds that I eventually got to experience over the rest of my adolescence.
I don't know if I was just there at the exact right time in my life to make the game feel so magical, or if melee truly had some special sauce that later smash games lack... I wonder if kids playing smash ultimate for the first time are getting a similar experience?
