I follow you on twitter, and am a patron, and we're bnet friends - but I'll still miss seeing you here on Tumblr, where you had a great place to post long-form thoughts. I'll definitely miss reading those.
I definitely will miss having a space where I could express more lengthy, thought out ruminations on various topics and whatnot. Twitter is great for knee-jerk reactions or threaded comments, but itâs not ideal for LONG rants. And I am still so appreciative that so many found my words and responses worth listening to, and that people actually came to me for advice.

World of Warcraft: Battle of shitposts
Make a deal
So apparently Blizz suddenly cares about RP realm names
A friend told me about their friendâs character being reported for a rename. They renamed their character with the same name (as you do, since itâs usually someone reporting you for petty bullshit) and they were reported again, so they were banned.
Sucks, yeah, but apparently Blizz doesnât really understand the problem here.
They donât understand RP addons.Â
What fucking RP realm do you play on where most people donât RP with any RP addons?
Hey look at all these Moon Guard RPers who donât use any RP addons whatsoever, especially not TRP.
Itâs certainly not around 700+ players, definitely not, no way.Â
Hey GM maybe non-RP names on your RP realm are such a problem for you because you donât use any RP addons for custom names because WoW has an antiquated naming system and has no character profile system.Â
So they donât understand the problem of having a name for your toon that doesnât match your RP character because they donât use RP addons, so therefore they donât get why picking a unique name is such a problem, so apparently itâs fine for there to be one and only one man named John in Azeroth.Â
And when you try to explain that you just use a common-use RP addon to have a proper RP name for other RPers to see, you get banned. Yeah, you could put effort into making up some stupid elf name that you donât even like, but that just takes that name away from someone who might have actually wanted it.Â
âŠSO WHAT THE FUCK, BLIZZ
So few people donât use rp addons idk what server this GM is from lol. Also who actually cares about that? A guildmaster of the korkron for years had the name skullcrusha and I bet that doesnât fit lol. What a bizarre and aggressive post from a blue.
Hi im Skullcrusha and I can assure you everyone hated the name.Â
The first person that came to mind was @addressroleplays and I will fight any GM who gives her problems
This is something I have had actual arguments over before with GMs. Address is Addressâ nickname. Itâs got an entire story behind it. It is what I use ICly and I will go down swinging for our right to use dumb ânon rp namesâ
ESPECIALLY GIVEN THAT GETTING ORIGINAL REGULAR ASS NAMES IS HARD. (Hey guys. Special characters are included in the ânnot allowedâ section too which makes it even harder)
Im more than willing to spearhead a forum push to end this dumb rule. Especially since Blizzard is planning to moderate rp addons now.
Are GMs really so fucking out of touch with their players ohhhh myyy godddd
Honestly my rule is âIf they donât have an RP addon theyâre probably not an RPerâ
Oh hey it gets better. From this thread:
The wow department at Blizzard really has their head up their own ass huh? Like maybe if you actually gave roleplayers ANY kind of support in the game, people would be less bothered by this, but you DONâT. Give us something to actually like about base wow roleplaying, like the hundreds of unused transmog options like a simple pair of glasses, easing up on transmog restrictions, BASIC FUCKING CHARACTER CUSTOMIZATION LIKE EYE COLOR, player housing like almost any other MMO in 2018 has, give us the option to have a first and last name because that alone would solve a LOT of naming frustration. Itâs so obviously scummy and fake to all of a sudden âcare about RP integrityâ when Blizzard doesnât give a DAMN about roleplayers to begin with, and has only made changes to restrict us. That blue poster is either not a roleplayer, or is lying about not using an addon because most games donât like to support addons in a way that makes them look lacking in any front. What bothers me the most about this, is the devs are so out of touch with their player base, that they have NO IDEA what people want anymore! They just make all these awful unwanted changes and expect good feedback.
Also side note: that intolerance comment by the blue poster gave me some huge red flags.
Hey blizzard, âoutdoorsâ, âhusbandâ, âcatloverâ and âcarwashâ arent disruptive names
You know what are??? RÞƥùĆïñthĂ„ and DÀßmĂżĂĄĆ or WÄ«ĆlĂĂ„m
Give us apostrophes. Give us spaces. Give us choices. But when thereâs so many people on one server, with alts and hoarding names, you think we can get any names??? Itâs all taken and it takes hours to come up with anything thatâs not taken and by that point, it still has to be misspelled to work and/or wasnât the thing you initially wanted
Iâm only tagging you all because I started a thread on twitter and the CS still hasnât responded to MY tweet, it responded to tweets in the thread and fully ignored this problem. @escalusia, @draevian, @yung-rage, @addressroleplays, @netherstray â I highly suggest all of you, and anyone you know that could be effected to tweet Blizzard CS. Because clearly the GMs on the forums are being outright disrespectful, and theyâre going to keep ignoring the problem until it starts blowing up. This is my twitter thread, for reference. [Link] As of 12:40 PM they have no responded directly to me, but have responded in unhelpful ways to people in my thread.
I donât actively RP that much and even -I- know that most RPers use RP addonsâŠÂ
So basically iâm going to lose most of my characters for having accents then?????
WoWâs Lack of Daughters (& Mothers)
(Copied from my Twitter)
Having some thoughts about World of Warcraftâs exploration of familial bonds and how those narratives are stringently âgenderedâ in a way thatâs extremely common and very limiting to the point of being sexist (or at least gender-excluding) tropes.
Donât get me wrong. I loved the Old Soldier cinematic a lot, but Warcraft recycles its premises so frequently and one dynamic it LOVES is the âFather/Sonâ. This relationship is usually framed by one of a few premises:Â âSon paying for the sins of the Father and trying to redeem himâ, âSon shames the Father but is redeemed by him last minuteâ, âSon living in Fatherâs shadowâ or âSad Dad finds New Sonâ.
You know whatâs missing from Warcraft? Daughters and Mothers. Jaina is the only character that comes to mind that exists in a Daughter/Father dynamic. There are WoW characters that happen to be moms, but their relationship with their children is never explored to the same degree. Moiraâs story with having her half Dark Iron son recognized by Ironforge comes to mind, though that is still not quite the same. Similarly to Jaina, Calia Menethil is another Daughter w/ Dead Dad killed by a Person/Force/Group that she finds herself allied with and trying to see the good in despite. Theyâd make for an interesting parallelâŠif it werenât obviously a recycled premise that indicates Blizzard isnât really interested in varying the family-related storylines they explore, especially with women. Youâll find more Dead or Never Existed Mothers in WoW than active mothers with storylines.
How would the story of Old Soldiers change if Zekhan was a female troll talking about her father? Or her mother? Would the audience recognize Saurfangâs paternal connection to this young soldier? Well, yes they could, but they arenât taught to see that. In WoW (and in media in general) there are only certain types of stories that can be told with Daughters/Fathers and Sons/Fathers, and theyâre vastly different. Because the way we see, present, and even develop relationships with parents is so heavily directed by gender roles.  This becomes more stringent in premises that involve armed conflict. If women canât exist as soldiers/leaders how can they exist beyond grieving widow/wife/mom?
There are more different types of family dynamics coming in BFA that involve daughters. Rastakhan & Talanji and Jaina & Katherine could potentially be refreshing and interesting stories. Iâm really hoping the Proudmoore women are framed beyond âDaelinâs Legacyâ, and I hope that Talanji stands on her own beyond the actions of her father.

The plot of BFA so far is making no fucking sense. Or at least, the justifications for why certain plot elements are happening is bullshit.
I was luke warm about this expansion and eye-rolling about the plot taking the Horde into yet another âThey are the villains because their leader is crayâ characterization. But after watching the Sylvanasâ short, Iâm actually angry. Like. Really angry. Iâve been playing Warcraft since â04 and have been Horde most of that. Iâve been on sabbatical for a while but, as always, I eventually end up coming back for an expansion.
I give zero shits about the overarching plot of BFA. While Iâm not against the Horde v. Alliance storyline and actually think it should carried through the games, the set up for this conflict in BFA is so bad. After defeating an ancient, universe-destroying evil that is literally the reason why Horde and Alliance are even fighting at all in the first placeâŠthey just go back to fighting? Over a mineral? Really?
I have so many grievances. And Iâm just gonna rant about them here. I havenât finished the first part of the prologue stuff in-game, nor the content they released today, so maybe some of these will be answered. But even if they are, itâs still indicative of shitty writing and a terrible characterization of the Horde (again.)
tl;dr: BFA should be about the Horde in a Civil War against Syvalanas and maybe it eventually will be but so far the set up is bullshit and they donât seem to be exploring all of the glaring inconsistencies and issues with it.
- Where are the Horde leaders? Why are people like Baine, Saurfang, and Lorâthemar just sitting back being complicit in this? In Before the Storm, Baine is definitely not on board with what Sylvanas is doing and (much like with Garrosh in MoP) heâs slipping into Anduinâs DMs to tell him âI ainât apart of thatâ. But as a leader of a druidic and shamanistic people, how could he just stand by and let the burning of Teldrassil happen without challenging Sylvanas if not flat out fighting her.Â
- Where does Volâjinâs spirit-prophecized destiny for Sylvanas come into play? Sylvanas being mostly absent and useless in Legion besides getting in a slappy fight with Genn was pretty much the indication that was a McGuffin to make her the next character of focus. While the Loa probably donât have stringently good âalignmentsâ, theyâre pretty much dicks if they were actually invested in this not-a-troll person becoming warchief so she could be a destructive warmongerer.
- Why would the Nightborne be okay with this? Thalyrssa doesnât like Tyrande because she was rude and the blood elves were so welcoming. So the Nightborne become Horde. Okay. Sure. But why would they be complicit in destroying a World Tree, something that is a significant cultural symbol for their people? Theyâve been divided from the Shalâdorei for a while, yes, and maybe their connection to druidism/shamanism isnât strong anymoreâŠbut now I just donât buy them being like âYeah weâre totally okay with this and we made a great decision in joining this organization.â
- After what happened to them with Garrosh, why would the trolls stand with Sylvanas? I donât feel like âBecause the loa saidâ is a strong enough justification. At this point, all of my trolls are like yeah no Volâjin was probably high af from that fel poisoning. As a people who have experienced losing their home more than a few times, who walked away from a collective of their own kind trying to find power and establish a new home through conquering others, why would they side with this?
- After Garrosh (and the Legion) why would anyone side with this?!?! ¯\_(ă)_/ÂŻ
- Sylvannas âI hate the Lich King for what he did to my people and even though heâs dead and we killed him and the Forsaken are now mine and we have a new life Iâm gonna be exactly like he was and commit genocideâ Windrunner okay bitch
The upcoming faction conflict bores me to tears. But the opportunity to finally end Malfurion Stormrageâs existence has me cheerfully marching on Darkshore with a smile on my lips and a song in my heart.

In kinda relation to the point of WoC fantasy reputation. Do you have thoughts (Doubtless you do) on how that translates over to PoCs in a fantasy setting where the implcation that the PoCs are not directly human, but a fantasy race? (Orcs or Trolls in Warcraft comes to mind)
(Disclaimer: I hate the term PoC but for the sake of discussion itâs easy to use so I will use it.)
I donât think anyone should equate fantasy races that are inspired by real-life cultures/races/ethnicities as âPoCâ. Itâs inaccurate and does not reflect actual representation or diversity that is significant or impactful. Trolls are humanoid but non-human creatures and they arenât actually of any non-white race. They are inspired by various Afro-Caribbean, South American, African, etc. cultures, but that doesnât mean they are representative of that culture or peoples from it. Similar to the Naâvi from Avatar. They are heavily inspired by Native Americans, and their story can be interpreted as an allegory for the experience of indigenous people in America, but they arenât actually Native American. So to say that trolls or tauren are the âPoCâ of WoW because theyâre inspired by non-white peoples is all shades of wrong.
One of my major issues with the racial or cultural âcodingâ of fantasy characters is that itâs often shallow or surface level, ignoring the actual ethnic and cultural nuances of race. For example: Drow being perceived as PoC/Black because theyâre dark-skinned. Being a person of color or a black person isnât just about being dark-skinned, and nothing else about Drow (to my knowledge) is inspired by dark-skinned peoples to the point of being reflective of them. This relates to my issue with the term and general understanding of âPeople of Colorâ. Itâs often reduced to only skin color and a generic not-white labeling rather than a specific ethnicity.
I think a more interesting adjacent discussion is what I call the âbetter implied, but not seenâ presence of PoCs in fantasy. There is an old joke that the only black actors in any of the Lord of the Rings movies were the orcs. I donât know if thatâs true, but itâs an appropriate metaphor for the absence of visible PoC in the fantasy genre. Meaning, when/if PoC are in fantasy, they are masked or obscured to the point of being unrecognizable and racially ambiguous.Â
Game of Thrones has very few black characters with actual prominent speaking roles and characters; yet among the masked Unsullied army, you can spot several brown arms and necks. Still, the major and minor casts are primarily white. Lupita Nyongâoâs role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens was anticipated with much hype, as she would be the first black woman in a Star Wars movie. Yet her character is a CG, non-human alien with absolutely no reflection of her actual physical features, including her race. Similarily, consider all of the PoC actors in Avatar, or that Ruth Negga was the only non-white actor in the Warcraft movie whose features werenât obscured by makeup or CG. Relatedly, World of Warcraft is another example of better implied, but not seen. Blizzard has built several fantasy cultures around Asian, African, Hispanic, and Middle Eastern peoples, yet is still slow to include a more inclusive and varied skin tone system for humans and human-like races.
Now this isnât to say PoC canât play non-human characters or non-visible roles. As I said in my Overwatch post, we should celebrate PoC actors/actresses in prominent roles regardless of their visibility. And non-visible roles for PoC can be just as significant and celebrated. Garnet from Steven Universe, despite being an alien, is presented as a black woman. Is she actually black? Debatable, but she is voiced by a black woman, looks like a black woman, and is celebrated as a black fantasy character.
But visibility is still significant. When the majority of PoC actors are primarily being hired to play non-humans and covered by makeup and effects that hide what they look like, thatâs an issue in the genre and an effect of racism. Roles for PoC in fantasy shouldnât be limited when their white counterparts collectively color (pun intended) the perception of race in fantasy and the perpetuation of sentiments like âElves can only be white.âÂ
Itâs awesome when world building of fantasy races, cultures, or characters is inspired by real-life peoples in a way that is respectful and thoughtful. But itâs even more awesome when people of color are included and actually visible as ACTUAL PEOPLE of color in fantasy. Not just reduced to monsters, aliens, or voices.
