So I told you guys about the Russian Pepsi fiasco circa 1989. Now let me tell you another lesser known fact about Pizza Hut in 1990. Gorbachev loved Pizza Hut. When I tell you this man loved Pizza Hut I mean he LOVED it.

He begged for America to allow Pizza Hut to come to Russia. For the longest time America said no. He would eat at Pizza Hut for every meal when he came to America. The man was absolutely foaming at the mouth for Pizza Hut pizza. After McDonalds opened their first location in Moscow America was like “you know whatever take your pizza, don’t say we never did anything for you”

The man campaigned for this restaurant so hard he neglected his country for a few months. He filmed a commercial that aired internationally. You can go and watch it on YouTube right now. Just search Gorbachev's Pizza Hut Commercial. This commercial aired all over the world for the longest time. He did it for his love of pizza and nothing else. How bizarre is that?

In fact it’s argued that because of Gorbachev's love of American food and pop culture is the reason the Soviet Union Collapsed. Because he was just bringing so much outside stuff in they were getting to see the rest of the world and they wanted more. In a weird way the commercial is a symbol of a capitalist victory. My Russian is pretty meh. But I know a Russian meme that was popular for awhile was A little old lady being asked if she liked Gorbachev and she responded with “Thanks to him, we have Pizza Hut!” Fucking wild.

Pizza Hut wasn’t the only thing this man loved. He was also a huge fan of pudding pops, Marilyn Monroe, and Disneyland, among other things.

I can’t really confirm this, of course (he’s dead), but i suspect that one of the main reasons Gorbachev loved Western things was because he grew up poor. He was raised by a Russian peasant family and was fed the same anti-American messages as any other Soviet citizen at the time. He got his first taste of luxury when he came into political power, and he also got to travel for the first time. When he studied and visited America and other Western countries, he finally decided, “Huh, these guys aren’t so bad after all.”

The first time Gorbachev visited the US (I’m not sure if it was his first time, but he was definitely an important political figure by this point) was. . . interesting. He went to a grocery store for the first time and asked the employees if they needed a college degree to work there. He was fascinated with how widely-available freezers were. He went to a farm and complained that the pigs were too fat. At one point, he was invited to a dinner run by the most important film studio in Hollywood at the time (Warner Bros, I think) and the competition between celebrities to get an invitation was fierce. Marilyn Monroe didn’t even want to show up, but her agent told her that Gorbachev specifically requested her (probably not true, but possible). She was famous for being late, so on the first time in her whole career where she was early, the parking lot was empty and she thought she had missed the whole event.

At the dinner, there were so many FBI and KGB agents there to keep security that the regular guests had a hard time getting in. His wife sat next to Jane Fonda and Marlon Brando and showed them pictures of her grandchildren. Everybody was still afraid of Gorbachev, so they let him drink as much he wanted. He got into an argument with the studio CEO right before the movie started playing. And shortly after that, some poor KGB agent had to tell him that the Disneyland trip had been cancelled and Gorbachev was fucking pissed.

This isn’t even everything that happened in that one trip, not to mention his whole political career. In all, this guy was a madman. And largely responsible for the world we live in today.

(To my mutuals: yes, I know this is way out of my lane and content area. But if I didn’t write a whole novel about this particular subject I was going to buy a Tesla and program it run to myself over because that is the only way I will ever shut up about Cold War history)

That's actually a huge detail that people often forget in retellings of the end of WW2. The original plan was to end the war by forcing Japan to surrender when the Soviets landed on it after defeating Germany. The reason why the US dropped the bombs was so they could force their surrender before the soviets got there, so they would not get a leg up on the negotiations.
