“Her diary?” he said, who’s diary? “Where exactly would this diary be?” With his speed and stealth as a vampire, he had to wonder if maybe he could retrieve it, it wasn’t like the thing was going to be locked up in the department of mysteries or something right?

“All I know is that it’s somewhere in the ministry. My best guess would be the Arcane Library, but I could be wrong. If it’s not in the library, it’ll probably be in the department of mysteries.”  Lily replied with a defeated shrug. After all, it wasn’t like Mike was going to be stupid enough to try and get the diary for her just because she had told him that she wanted it. At least she hoped he wasn’t going to even try. She certainly wasn’t worth the risk.

“Well…is there anything that can be done about it? any way to make being an empath safer?” he asked. He wasn’t sure if there was…but after helping his sister with his powers he had to admit, he was eager to see if he could help her as well.

“This is going to sound so stupid, but I don’t really know as much as I should about being an empath.... I’ve kind of been trying to shut it down rather than embrace it. So far it’s just been an entirely terrible experience.... well up until the war....” Her words trailed off as she struggled to explain. “That’s why I was hoping to get hold of her diary... to find out what she knew about controlling her powers.”

“They were what?” he said, confused and alarmed, “tortured?” He liked Lily, on a couple of different levels, as a friend, as a very pretty lady and as a genuinely good person. It didn’t take long for his concern to mount and mount, “can…something be done? You can keep it a secret right? You’ll be safe?” 

“Well, I’ve managed so far without anyone hunting me down, so hopefully I’ll be safe for a while longer.” She was understandably worried about what the Ministry would do if they found out her secret. “Besides, there are only a very select few people that I trust entirely who know right now. My own brother died not knowing just how flawed I am.” Lily sighed loudly. It still hurt to talk about Charlie, but the pain had eased slightly since she had planted a Rowan tree on his grave.

“Oh?” he said, his interest immediately peaked, “is that so?” he took a step closer to her and circled around her stopping right in front of her, frowning pensively. Her heart beat and blood flow and general manner all seemed to indicate that there was something…up. “Are you taking some sort of secret martial arts class or…..? Look, if something’s, you know, wrong I’d help if I could…”

Lily debated not telling him, but she needed someone to confide in and as of yet, she had no reason not to trust Mike.  She was vaguely aware of the fact that she had been panicking. She looked around to make sure they were alone before talking in a hushed tone.  “Apparently I’m what’s known as an empath. And that’s really not a good thing. The last one that the Ministry knew about was held captive and tortured.” Despite the fact that nobody else could have possibly heard her words, she was still beginning to think that she had done the wrong thing by opening up to him.

“Mentor? What’s the lesson on? Giving stitches or something?” he asked, tilting his head, squinting his eyes and rocking back on his heel. It seemed to him that a mentor in her field would be someone you would be eager to see as often as possible. Maybe this mentor was an asshole. 

“Actually, it’s something a little more personal to me and nothing to do with healing.” She bit her lip, looking down. It wasn’t that she didn’t trust him, it was just that she didn’t want anyone to overhear them. Her empath lessons were always during the quietest night of the week because that was when it was safest for her. Although her mentor was not a fellow empath, he was related to one, so he knew just how much danger she was in if knowledge about her ‘gift’ was to fall into the wrong hands.

Star chewed on the end of her wand. “Weeeeell, uh, I heard one of the patients in there talking about how the hospital food was kind of bland and tasteless, so uh…Imight’vetriedaspelltomakeitbetter.” She smiled at Lily sheepishly. “My bad.”

“That was a really dangerous thing to do. You can’t just go around making up spells, especially not in a hospital. What if you had hit someone?” Lily felt a little bad for reprimanding the girl, but she was worried about the safety of her patients.

“I’m in the tree,” he said, “lowest branch?” was it really that dark? It must have been, he found himself often overestimating human senses. He dropped down from the branch and landed easily in front of her, brushing off a leaf that hand landed on his shoulder. “So what brings you out and about so late at night?” he asked with a half smile, putting his hands in his sweater pockets. “Getting ready to go to work?”

“Actually, it’s my day off, I was just going in to talk to my mentor. I’m supposed to be having a lesson tonight, but I really don’t want to go to it.” Lily wasn’t normally one to talk about herself so openly, but for some reason, she felt that she could trust Mike not to tell anyone. She didn’t think that her empath lessons were working, but she couldn’t tell her mentor how desperately she needed the book. The thought that she might one day have access to it was the only thing that was keeping her sane.

With the moon hanging up above he hung off one of the top branches of a tree, staring at it, simply enjoying its light. It was as comforting and soothing as the sun had once been, it filled him with as much joy, mostly because it wasn’t as intense, it didn’t overwhelm his heightened senses. The night breeze rusted through the leaves bellow his perch and in the trees surrounding him for yards away. He breathed in the night air…and caught a scent, a familiar scent…

He spotted her walking out of a store on the street bellow, a ways away, too far for her to notice him…or at least he assumed. As she walked closer, he climbed quietly down the tree branches until he reached the bottom rows, “hey there Potts,” he said with a mischievous grin as he reclined against the trunk of the tree, regarding her from above, “nice night, huh?”

Lily jumped slightly when she heard Mike’s voice above her. She hadn’t heard him approach, so she hadn’t been expecting it. “If you want to talk with me, you’ll at least have the decency to show yourself, Micheal.” She replied with a slight smile. She knew enough about her friends to be able to identify their voices. Due to her work pattern, she was often out at night nowadays so the dark didn’t frighten her like it should have done.

“Oh, c’mon,” he cooed, wiggling a glass in front of her face. “Just one?” He followed her, knocking two back, hugging one arm around Lily’s shoulders in goofy encouragement. “If you want to remember tonight, be my guest. Just sip. I, on the other hand, like to live life on the edge.” Laurence took another one, nudging a glass toward her. He was just being playful, but he expected her to know that he’d never force her to drink.

Lily laughed slightly, picking up a second shot and drank it just as quickly as the first. “Did I tell you that I got a tattoo?” She asked, moving slightly to look at him. She couldn’t actually remember the last time that they had really spent any time together.  “Okay, if you honestly want to know everything, we can go.” She sighed in defeat. She needed to talk to someone about everything, and she couldn’t think of anyone that she could trust more than Laurence.

His sigh signaled that she’d won. If she didn’t want to talk, that was fine - he wouldn’t force her. He just wanted his friend to be happy, or at least a little happier. “Can’t beat that logic, I guess.” Laurence pursed his lips in a bit of frown as he thought. Lily was never the type to drink a lot, at least no to get drunk, so maybe a few more glasses and she’d be willing to spill the beans about what he’d missed. “You need a drink, then. A real drink.” Before she could object, he went to the bar and ordered a few rounds of whiskey shots, coming back with four little glasses in each hand. He held them up triumphantly to her, a goofy grin on his face.

Lily had only started drinking after her brother’s death. He had spent so much time trying to get her to let her hair down, so it would be disrespectful not to do so now he was gone. “As much as I think you’re a great friend when you put the effort in, I think shots is a little excessive. I’m trying to unwind on my day off, not trying to get so drunk that I can’t remember tonight.” She laughed but took one of the shots from him anyway. Draining the glass, she smiled at him before setting it down on the table.
