Charles Deetz is not the straight man in this story(the character archetype, anyway). He fell in love with a woman who used to create haunted houses in their garage during summer time, and then he fell in love with a woman who pronounces words in ways no one has ever pronounced them in the history of the English language. He deals with his grief by hurling himself into a high risk real estate venture. He thinks every wall can be an accent wall -- and in fact, should be. He looks at a perfectly ordinary house and calls it a nursing home for sad cats. He got his daughter a life coach instead of a therapist. He says things like "I'm very good at sex."

This man is insane but believes so wholeheartedly that he is the normalest person in the room at all times you can watch him include a request for a prenuptial agreement in a proposal and go "yeah this is normal behavior".

I think for me the main difference between Alex Brightman's Beetlejuice and everyone else's is that other actors play him as someone who's, like, just this guy, while Alex plays him as a guy who's, like, just this Thing.
