The fading sun glowed crimson, staining the sky in blood. The wind had stilled, leaving the valley shrouded in silence. Elena wrapped the shawl tighter around herself. She held Michael’s gaze, as he loomed in front of her, clad in armor, hand resting on the hilt of his sword. Her throat ached with tears – she wrestled the urge to wrap her arms around him, and the shadow, darkening his sapphire eyes, betrayed his battle with a similar sentiment.
Pushing away the exhaustion, she moved towards him. The air between them had grown viscous.
“Your people will soon pour out the bowls” she spoke.
He nodded.
“Yes.”
Elena shook her head. A crack of thunder rumbled in the distance.
“Michael, it can’t happen” she pleaded “We have to stop it.”
He was the one to step towards her this time; his grip on Glorious’ hilt tightened, his fingers burning to caress her cheek.
“It can not be stopped” his tone remained soft, despite the sorrow soaking it “God’s will can not be held back.”
Elena grimaced. Fire scorched her ribs, as her face twisted in anger.
“It has all been a lie, then?” she snapped “The love, you claimed to feel for me?”
“How could you say that?” the Archangel hissed through gritted teeth – her accusation had shattered his heart in his chest “You have set me aflame” his hand slipped away from the sword “And I will burn, for however long eternity may last me” he vowed, reaching for her face.
The Emperor shoved his arm away, sneering.
“Burn?” she scoffed, in disbelief almost “It is I, who will burn! Alive” she glared at him “In the lake of fire. And you” a bitter chuckle escaped her lips “My beloved, will stand there, watching.”
Michael’s eyes welled with tears.
“A moment of your absence hurts me more, than any torture of damnation could” he reached for her, again “But I would gladly throw myself into the fire in your stead.”
And perhaps, he indeed might beg to take her place.
Elena bit down on a peal of laughter.
“You fool” she snarled “Have you forgotten? You’ll be the one, dragging me to my damnation. You” the air around her seemed to blacken “Will defeat me, supposedly right here, in this fucking field.”
Michael stared at her, not unlike a beaten dog would.
“Elena…” he begged.
She closed the gap between them, from the sight of it more narrow than a straw, when in truth, it was a chasm without edges.
„What a warrior you are, Commander“ she spat „Helpless by your own choice. The champion, who will not fight for what he loves, nor whom.“
„I am a servant of the Lord.“
„Very well“ Elena responded coldly „I understand.“
His vision burred by agony, the Archangel did not notice the Emperor pull a dagger from under her clothes, not until she pointed the glinting blade at her swollen stomach.
„Should you love me, like you claim, you may do me the kindness of destroying me“ she growled „So I might be spared from the suffering.“
Michael gawked at her in horror.
„Elena, stop!” he begged “You’ll injure yourself!”
She flipped the weapon in her palm, to clutch it by the blade. The edge of the metal pressed into her skin, drawing drops of blood.
“Go ahead, Michael” she extended the hilt towards him “Plunge the knife into me, and your child inside me. Bring a quick end to us both.”
