Btw that rule about not trusting how you feel after 4pm in the winter or 9pm in the summer (really we should just say after the sun goes down but whatever) is only about negative feelings. if you are chilling with your best friend drinking hot chocolate and have never felt more loved and safe, that is 100% true and you can and should trust
If a stranger misgenders you, please please please do not ever utter the phrase, “I’m a man.” It sounds very unnatural and immediately sounds overly defensive.
My advice? Just look at the person like they’re an idiot and, in the deepest voice possible, say, “Uh. Alright, then.”
Just act as though they made a huge and obvious mistake, and don’t get flustered. If you’re comfortable with it, handle the situation with humor and say something like, “Man, I know I’ve got a babyface, but I didn’t think it was that bad.”
and if someone doesn’t believe u, say you have a hormonal imbalance + are on meds for it. it’s quick, believable, and most ppl are too uncomfortable discussing health problems with strangers to question it.
Can’t find it, going to just going to explain it. I’ve been out for like 4 and a half years. I saw this post when I was Freshly Out, and this post has been so deep in my fucking rat brain for actual years.
You have to react like you’re not expecting to be misgendered. It’s hard and it’s weird, because I know, you walk out into the world very aware and afraid of how the cis people are going to perceive you. But deadass there is a “Wow, that stranger has made a bold call there” mentality that, yeah it’s a fake it till you make it type of deal. But once I internalized that, I genuinely don’t even hear people misgendering me most of the time.
I’m nonbinary, most of the time my gender presentation priorities are Have Fun and Look Queer.
The first time I noticed that being misgendered slides off my brain like a wet duck I was in a 7/11 and a cashier tried to direct me to the cardboard drink sleeves while I was like 3rd or 4th in line (yeah it was kinda weird, I was holding a large hot coffee in my bare hand and I guess it freaked the dude out, but like my hands are actually really heat resistant I was fine, anyway) He said several variations on “Mam, would you like a cardboard sleeve for your coffee, they’re right there” and I legitimately did not process that he could possibly be talking to me until he tried something like “the one in the red hat” and then I tuned back in and declined the heat protectant sleeve. (I do not know why this human man was so insistent that I needed a heat protection cardboard sleeve, and I’m gathering that me totally zoned the fuck out to his multiple attempts to get my attention holding something that he apparently thought was made out of fucking lava probably had the exact Genderless Eldritch Horror effect that we all know and love)
I accidentally also did this to one of my professors a couple weeks ago, I was given an instruction with she/her pronouns in it, purely by accident, this professor genuinely does right by his trans students as best he can, but I legitimately did not even process that it was for me until he repeated it with they/them.
This compared with a couple years ago a different professor slipped up and used me in an example to the class with she/her pronouns and I literally barely held myself together until the end of the class, made it 4 steps out the door and started silently crying.
It feels fucking powerful in a “that should have hurt, and I didn’t even notice, cis people have no power over me” way. I have a little piece of the security that cis people have in the way that they interact with the world. And that is absolutely precious.
It takes untraining years of social conditioning, and pretending that you can’t fathom that someone would use those words on you, that no one has ever said that to you before and the words are so foreign that they mean nothing to you.
And yeah I started out begging my body not to flinch when a stranger calls out “mam”, and practicing a moment of confusion and unaffected disbelief when cashiers would ask if I found everything I was looking for “young lady” and deliberately ignoring the incorrect gendered terms. And you know op’s “Just look at the person like they’re an idiot, break out the deep voice and say “Um, alright then”” it will feel fake at first.
But fuck at some point it stops being an act, and that feels fucking bulletproof.
I was friends with lots of metal head dudes who had long hair and my gender essentialist country would always misgender them from the back or wtvr and that’s how they reacted. With humour or turning around with a “u wanna try that one again, buddy?” Look on their face that made ppl stumble and correct themselves immediately. This posts reminds me to try that more.
there really are no consequences for being wrong about your gender, orientation, etc. for a while, btw. if you try something and it just doesn't fit, it's better to have tried and found out than to be left wondering.
Oh boy, this chapter…It's amazing that Mikuni was so calm witnessing his mother being shot in front of him.
It could be that he knew that's what she wanted, maybe she attempted to kill herself before and ultimately accepted her choice, thus he didn't show sadness about what happened, having accepted that it would happen eventually.
On page 16, I had trouble with this panel because I'm not sure who Mikuni might be referring to…He says あいつ which I translated as "that person".
Also, I want to make a note about the word 許すwhich I have translated as "to tolerate" (on the first page as well)
許す means not only "to forgive", which is how it's often translated. For example, you can say to someone 許さない! and it can either mean "I won't forgive you" or "I won't let you". It also has the meaning "to allow/permit".
So, it can have different ways to translate and I think that in Kiriko's case, like when she used the word on the first page, she was saying that she wouldn't allow something to continue, in her case being that she wanted to kill Misono.
Here on this page, I think 許す has the same meaning, because I think it's saying that she was debating whether to accept her circumstance (she was hurt by Mikado because of his affair) or kill.
Translation notes. Please read them because there were some lines that I had trouble with and explanation is required.
First off, as you have seen, I even translated the texts on the color spread that were written in romaji and the first one about Touma (01 memo), omg, like I had trouble with that one, mainly the last line,
which I hope I got right.
Next we have the sentence from the first page.
In Japanese, one of the verbs that was used 満ちる works with both of the nouns "moon" and "time", but the verb wouldn't translate the same in English.
月が満ちる This means "the moon waxes", 月が満ちた means "the moon is full". The verb means to fill; to become full (of); to be filled (with); to brim (with) so it would translate awkwardly to say "the time is full". Saying 時が満ちた means "the time has come". So you see, I couldn't translate the verb the same way for the two nouns, hence my adaptation, making two sentences.
Alright, the following two pages, especially the second one requires explanation regarding what Miyako says.
As you can see, in the last panel, there were two readings.
In Japanese, Miyako says:
死に際 (こっち) は専門家 (アタシ) じゃなきゃ無理ね。
死に際 (こっち) (intended readings in the parenthesis)
The kanji reading says "verge of death/deathbed/one's last moments" and the furigana reads "here", however it can also mean when you refer to a person, depending on distance, so it's like saying "this one here (who is near me).
Then we have 専門家 (アタシ), the kanji reads specialist/expert and the furigana reads "I/me".
Regarding Miyako's healing power, I have trouble understanding how it works. Miyako's line was tricky and the only clue that somewhat helped was something that Nicco says.
Miyako's last line was the most troublesome ;;
So, as you can see, there is emphasis on the word 「死なない」 (to not die) which is followed by the quotation particle って thus I thought that regarding the power, it can heal a person as long as they tell themselves "I will not die."
I mentioned how one of Nicco's line was a clue as to how I understood it that way, so let's take a look at the line.
Notice how in Nicco's first line he says 死なないと思ったら.
(When I thought that I'm not going to die"). That's what made me theorize about Miyako's healing power. If Nicco told to himself that he wasn't going to die, then he would be saved.
I hope I managed to explain well enough ;;
Regarding this page, I left Misono's line (マイ...?) untranslated because what he says was an English word and it wouldn't make sense thus, I left it out, I didn't wanna invent something.
So, the line outside of Shuuhei's speech bubble says "I do not have my own car". He uses a wasei-eigo term (Japanese word constructed of elements from foreign languages, most commonly from English) which in this case is マイカー a transliteration of "my car".
Thus, you can see how it wouldn't have made sense to have Misono quote him to say "My car...?" in English. In Japanese it works because Misono might have not heard the term before.
Okay, there were some vague lines here and it's possible that a term might appear later on.
In Mikuni's 3rd sppech bubble, the furigana reading of the word 問題 meaning "problem" reads イレギュラー which means "irregular"."
It's possible that this term could be used again.
If the kanji reading is "problem", maybe that's what an "irregular" is considered. Personally, it sounds like Mikuni might have been referring to Iori in this case.
I mentioned about how some lines here are vague and in the same line, I don't know what Mikuni could be referring to by saying そこ (there).
In his 4th speech bubble he says その件 which means "that matter; affair; case". I can't say what he's referring to...
I hope these notes helped to understand some of the lines!
I want one of those scenes in a dude bro film where “tomboy” chick has to wear a dress to go undercover or whatever, but instead of the guys drooling as she walks down the stairs, they’re like “k. U need to stop. Go put the cargo pants back on. You look super uncomfortable and awkward in that. Brutus, you go be the fake prostitute.”
