How art goodâŚ
Step 1: become insane about something Step 2: grab a pencil about it
...but watch out
Yeah so I have step one down to the T and also step 2 but thatâs where I got stuck
this is the first drawing of Ruby I did in 2013, the first digital drawing I did of her in 2020, and one of my most recent Rubys from 2024.
Before 2013, i was still drawing with even worse anatomy, inaccurate clothing folds, and posing everyone with their hands behind their backs. Before that, before I even knew what "anime" was, I was drawing flowers from my mom's garden. You pick up the pencil, and you do it bad. You do it bad over and over again until it looks a little less bad. Not in comparison to what other people are doing, but in comparison to what you've already done before. You don't have to draw everyday, but if you put the pencil down for a bit, you just have to make sure you pick it up again at some point. Could be a week, could be a few months, could be years; go at your own pace. Just know, that while taking a break can always help, doing the work is the only way you'll make progress.
While you'll definitely "improve" faster by drawing more often and through intentional study, unless you want to do it as a career I wouldn't recommend trying to make art simply because you wanna 'get good'. You should do it if you find some part of it fun, or at the very least, find the alternative (not drawing) to be worse than the act of doing it. You just have to draw on purpose for the sake of drawing, and the skill will come afterwards. You also don't even have to draw characters. You can pick up clay, a crochet hook, an instrument, a blank word document, or paint brush and just make whatever! just draw circles if that's your thing!! there are no rules!!!
the act of creating anything is better than creating nothing for fear you won't be a master from day one. Everybody starts somewhere. You can start with a single line today, if u want.
