Mime, Pierrot, Harlequin
How can you tell the difference? First, think about classifications. Pierrots are sometimes classified as a sub-species of Mime, though many experienced breeders will disagree. Harlequins are a relation of the now-extinct Jesters.
Mimes and Pierrots are both primarily monochrome. Classical Harlequins have red and black coloring, as well as unique checkered patterns. Pierrots are much smaller than Harlequins or Mimes, average 1 to 2 feet in height. In addition, Mimes are incapable of any vocalization.
Harlequins are obligate carnivores, meaning they require meat and some form of hunting enrichment to keep them happy. Pierrots and Mimes subsist on a classical clown diet, though their candy should be kept monochrome if possible. Mimes' preferred form of enrichment is simple performance (slapstick), while Pierrots have more complex storylines related to their current mood and recent events. Harlequins and Pierrots can be quick rivals, but if properly socialized they become close partners who love to perform together.
I have a Harlequin and a Porcelain-Pierrot mix who are close friends. While in the early stages of acclimation, my Harlequin wanted to bite my Pierrot quite a lot, but they got over that phase very quickly, and the lack of overlap in diet makes the feeding process very easy. I have only fostered Mimes short-term, never long-term, but from what I can tell, they are good beginner clowns. Pierrots and Harlequins, on the other hand, should only be taken care of by experienced clown owners.
I mean. They're not not supportive I guess
