SOME CHARACTER WRITING/DESIGN ADVICE FROM THE KILLJAM XXX TEAM:

When you're making a character, especially in the medium of audio where you might not have the liberty of having canon character art, the little trick we love is to give your characters the One Weird Detail.

Even better if this One Weird Detail is something that directly plays into the plot, the characterization, or how others treat your characters.

For Faustina, it's the fact that she's got blue skin. That's something that's weird and immediately identifiable, and if you see a happy-looking gal with a big machete and blue skin, it's probably Faustina.

For Bellamy, it's his robot arm. A skinny character with messy hair and a little waistcoat? There's a million people that could be, but you see that he's got a big, jungle camo robot arm, and that can't be anyone but Bellamy.

Same with Mara's all-robot limbs, Mr. Dirge's cybernetic hand and eye, Roger Tallarico's golden teeth, and the fact that Anna Konda is a giant snake with arms. Give your characters One Weird Detail and hammer it in as much (but as naturally) as you can, and that'll become the iconic part, even if in fan interpretations other details vary wildly.

Audio Drama Sunday - 8th February ✨

Here’s to another fantastic week of audio drama! 

🧳 Travelling Light by @monstrousproductions (72) ough I loved the ideas in this entry, and the sarky buggeriness of Trav’s arrival to the cockpit! The idea of repair as an act of devotion and how doing in mindfully brings you more in touch with something greater than yourself is DELIGHTFUL. I also loved the heated conversation over dinner. They really are so similar!! And I think because their relationship began with discord, they’re so much more comfortable fighting than they are being soft with one another. It’s so fun having a pair of characters who are on safer territory snarling at one another even when they like each other so much!! I am NOT prepared to find out what happens during the blackout. Help. 

🐢 @redvalleypod (S4E1-3) God, I love this show so much. I tried to put off starting S4 because I knew I’d tear through it, but I couldn’t resist. It has certainly lived up to its previous seasons so far! I’m so happy to have Warren back in the narrative and I literally cried when he was reintroduced to Waffles. Oops. I initially thought a tortoise was a joke about hibernating when it’s cold, but I see how beneficial it is for them to have a long-living pet! 

🦋 @remnantspod (43) This one was far, far too weepy for me. I can’t even think about those children in the coal cellar without getting VERY upset. I felt like it made me take on the role of the Apprentice. Afterwards, I was like ‘why have you shown me this?!’ ‘What is the point??!!!’, it felt very much like something he’d say if awake. 

🐕 Hearthbound (4-10) I finished the first season of this show. Even as someone who knows very, very little about the Odyssey, there is so much to love here (Mainly Mack)! The songs are so beautiful and the soundscaping is perfectly considered. For a story about someone seeking home, the vibes are so comforting and homely! As a side note, I love that Penelope is also a hand-stabber. They are perfect for each other.

Did you know radio’s first daytime soap was made for housewives? Clara, Lu and Em started in 1930 and the actresses did the earliest episodes for free before they got sponsored. It was something to entertain women, about the lives of women at the time, when they were expected to have husbands at work and children in school. I found that out doing research for this article about podcasts. If you think that’s interesting, you might think this article is interesting too.

The reason I've been trying to drill down on the nature of audio dramas is that sometimes I'll see them advertised as "queer" or "diverse", and that's great, but there's more that can be said.

Like, The Magnus Archives is queer, but if you want a fluffy queer romance, nope, not recommending The Magnus Archives to you lol.

Or, let's say you want an audio drama with a Hispanic main character. That's a list that includes Midnight Burger, Mabel, The White Vault, and The Harbingers.

And those four audio dramas are all radically different from each other!!

Midnight Burger is a comedy in the style of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Mabel is an unsettling tale with themes of isolation and parasocial relationships.

The White Vault is Rocks Fall; Everyone Dies [Failing to] Survival Horror.

The Harbingers is a high-concept prestige drama.

Depending on your story preferences, you might very well not vibe with all of them.

Which is why diversity in storytelling is so important. No one story can be everything to everyone. All four audio dramas I mentioned would be worse if they'd been saddled with being The One True Hispanic Led Audio Drama.
