"Mom! Mom! Look what I can do!" Carter says excitedly, running back into the house with dirt on him. He points his hand at a vase of dead roses and brings them back to life. (giftedxgrant)

"Carter," Cat sighs, wiping off a hint of dirt from her shirt but not chastising him for playing in it. Eyes roll, fond smile curved upwards on lips as she steps closer to the plant, looking for the wire attached with a hum. "Didn't I tell you to stop video chatting David Blaine? He's supposed to be stuck in that...water tank for another month. He's bored and giving magic lessons to every one who will listen and I don't want you to wind up thinking not breathing for ten minutes is a good--"
A pause, brows knitting. There's no wire.
"How did you do this?"
"I don't know, I just saw dead flowers at the old library and I was going to dig them up and before I could they weren't dead anymore."
"And what..." Cat remains surprisingly calm, years of journalism good for more than just the clout, "Did you think when you touched it? Did you feel anything? Are you playing a joke right now? It's alright if you are, Carter. And it's alright if you're not. I'm just..." Fingers curve under the plant, "Curious, is all."
"I didn't touch them, I was about to put my right hand around the shovel and they just...came back to life." He says. "I felt happy." He had been smiling, but it faded when she asked if he's playing a joke. "It's not a joke!" He's not sure how to feel about all of this, it's confusing.
Carter just goes upstairs to the bathroom to take a shower.
