Today at the weekly family dinner my mother brought out THIS ice cream:
And, like, sounds good, right? Caramel, cream and chocolate with delicious cinnamon
Folks, I don't think an ice cream has ever broken me like this one did....
The cinnamon overpowers everything and cinnamon is.... Strange in ice cream. Just, very strange. It's not BAD, it's just WEIRD. It's a flavour combination that shouldn't be allowed to exist. My brain couldn't comprehend it.
Will I eat it again if presented to me? Probably. Will I buy it myself? No
Aaarrghh gnawing on the furniture wondering just what the damn hell the Brimhats are trying to do with Silverwood trees....
(manga spoilers, looott of manga spoilers. Like "last 10 manga chapters" spoilers. "Anime will definitely not go this far for many years" spoilers)
And flicking through the chapters to confirm Ininia's hands look like they could be Silverwood too, i re-read:
There are 3 characters in the series who have been infected in this way by the Brimhats:
Qifrey (presumably, right eye)
Custas (legs)
And Ininia (hands)
They had seeds in a vial, and wanted to deliver them to the King of the peninsula. The King of Life. The guy who knows more about medicine than almost anyone else in the peninsula.
It takes root when the host is injured, and essentially shores up that injury until the host finds sanctuary
But one of the things the Brimhats are all about is bringing about any and all kinds of lost magic - including the arts of healing
The whole thing with Custas is they never expected him to be happy and content enough for the tree to take root. They expected him to be in a permanent state of anger at the world, his circumstances, and the things hes been deprived of in life.
We dont know WHY they did this to Qifrey, and we know nothing about Ininia at all. We also... dont actually know why Qifrey lost his eye.
And this does make me wonder... are these experiments all about... healing? Like, in some sick and twisted way... is this really about actually trying to fix injuries that cant be healed even with medicine?
You cant bring back someones lost eye, and the principles wouldnt be flexible enough to make an eye contraption, but maybe Silverwood could? It seems silly, but Qifrey is probably one of the earliest attempts they had at this. How are you supposed to know the boundaries of what Silverwood can heal if you dont push them? And you could test on an animal, sure. But they cant give you feedback on whether the tree-eye works.
But why they wanted to give the seeds to the King of Life is... a mystery
This leads me to guess that... Ininia might just be a witchs child who was born with a disability in her hands and told she'd never be able to draw worth a damn. She seems particularly unhappy about being infantilised or told she cant do something. Shes also, presumably, not at risk of becoming A Tree given how she flies off the handle about Custas not actually being that angry about his lot in life. Shes incredibly angry about something. And that something probably is to do with regular witch society. Which... is not very accommodating of disabilities that may affect the ability to draw seals - as we see with Tartah and his Silverwash.
(side note - there was mention of him getting a Master at Silver Eve, and he ends it going off with the very Brimhat who seems to be most interested in the Silverwood experiments ;) )
I've already questioned that guys interest in magic and breaking the principles, and that he might be close to working it all out. But hes not working with the Brimhats already, because they were trying to force an audience with him through Coco and Tartah at the procession. So they dont necessarily know this about him?
But what if they were confident enough in the use of Silverwood as a "treatment" and were offering it as such? Give it to the Healer King, it ends up being used to Heal People, and then... ??? what exactly?? Some ulterior end goal i cannot even begin to comprehend, because i dont think i have enough pieces of the puzzle here.
Do they want to put a silverwood tree close to him? Maybe see if it grows in that castle warded against all magic?
Or perhaps to make a bunch of trees just spring up all over the population, and see if anyone does some very basic magic with the sap and let the shockwaves ripple through society?
Or... the public connecting the dots between witches and these parasitic trees, which are killing their loved ones who just wanted healing, could damn well turn society against the pointed caps for hiding this kind of information from the general public. And the brimhats swoop in
who knows!! everything about the goals of the Brimhats is an unknown at this point in time! (And i'd argue they are not actually a unified organisation, more like a bunch of separate scholars with a similar interest in pushing the boundaries, but very different areas of interest and study. So each Brimhat we come across is actually going to have a slightly different goal to all the others, and are only just loosely connected in philosophy)
