When Dunk is born, Lyonel is already over ten years old and feels the pain of his soulmate's first breath. It hurts so much that he think he'll die for a moment.
Then Lyonel is overjoyed at the idea of having a soulmate.
Except of course, now Lyonel feels all those little baby pains and as he grows up he feels Dunk's constant hunger.
Dunk, on the other hand, doesn't often suffer because Lyonel is a lord, so he is well fed, he doesn't get cold, doesn't burn himself trying to light a fire or suffer the other minor inconveniences of ordinary people. But sometimes Dunk feels the pain of being hit or cut, the pain of training aches or headaches after Lyonel's drinking binges.
The excruciating pain Lyonel must feel when Dunk loses Rafe and gets a spear stuck in his leg. He's so scared for his soulmate at that moment.
Lyonel always throws lavish feasts, hoping one day to satisfy his ever-hungry soulmate. And he vows to cut off the hand of anyone who strikes his future Lady.
Then, of course, they meet in Ashford. Whether they realize they're soulmates when he crushes his feet remains to be seen. One thing is certain: after the Trial of the Seven, they know it.
But Dunk doesn't feel good enough for a Lord like Lyonel, who will only bring him sadness and death if he stays with him.
Lyonel is devastated by Dunk's refusal.
Would Lyonel be willing to kidnap his soulmate to bring him back to Accalmie? Or would he let him go?
