So I’m finally responding to these questions y’all did ages and ages ago. I think @pritkinsprettydick tagged me and possibly @slightlybitchyclairvoyant as well? There may have been others but I’ve forgotten cause it was a while ago, whoops, sorry!
- If you could ask Karen Chance to write a novella/short based on one character or ship, what would it be?
I talk a lot about how these books are about more than just Cassie and Pritkin and other characters should get time to be fleshed out, you know, because it gives the series such depth and I love that. BUT let’s be real here, I’m Casskin trash and every damn time the possibilty of a new novella arises I’m gonna be out there lobbying hard for a casskin or a pritkin focused one bcs I’m terrible and I’ve accepted that about myself.
- What is your favorite time traveling scene?
Uhhhh there are so many??? I love every scene with baby!Pritkin, little shit though he may be (E S P E C I A L L Y that conversation they have in the treetops in RtW, like ‘I see you’/‘you always did’ *ugly crying*). I also really really love the whole sequence in TtS when Cassie goes back in time and hangs out with past!present!Pritkin (bloody time travel makes things so complicated) because it’s got such a juicy combination of comedy (boobgate!) UST, angst/pining, lowkey flirtiness and these moments of incredibly understated tenderness, like when Pritkin puts his hoodie on Cassie?? But I think for sheer ‘WTF I WAITED FOR THIS FOR LIKE 10 YEARS I CANT BELIEVE ITS FINALLY HAPPENING IDK WHETHER IM HAPPY OR MY HEAD’S EXPLODING’ it’s gotta be that Casskin ILY scene in the extended time travel sequence in RtS. It’s a gorgeous scene for about a million different reasons, the time travel is really only incidental lol.
- If you lived in the Chanceverse, what would you rather be: vampire, were, clairvoyant, or mage?
I’m gonna cheat and say witch. I don’t fancy any of the others - idk enough about weres in the Cassieverse, clairvoyancy seems more trouble than it’s worth, mages have cool powers but have a fairly horrible political system/elitist society and vamps are too brutal and long-lived for me (although actually I’d say manage okay in the vamp hive mind, having come from a large family where personal space is not really a priority. The problem with being a vamp for me I think is that you either have to be pretty ruthless or take orders from someone who is. And I don’t think I’d be happy doing either. Also, I really don’t wanna live in this world forever or even longer than about 70 years or so). So yeah, I think even though it wasn’t mentioned, of all the ‘creatures’ in the Chanceverse, witches are the coolest. Messing around with wild magic, almost getting myself blown up on the daily, it sounds ideal, really.
- If you could change anything from any storyline, what would it be?
Argh, see, the problem with changing things in these books is that everything fits together so neatly and each plot point or storyline serves multiple functions within the larger narrative. So if you change one thing, either everything else will turn out differently or you’ll have to rewrite large sections of the story to have things turn out the same way, and either way you pretty much end up with a whole new story. Which is fine, except I like this story, warts and all. As it were. So, I guess I wouldn’t change anything about storylines? Maaaybe I would take out some of the more sexually graphic stuff, or tone it down - like the punishment feeding scene in TtD (it freaks me out) or the scene in CbS when Cassie shifts back to a party Mircea is attending in 19th century London and there’s some girl being fed on in public and these two vamps are kind of using her as a sexual conduit. That also gives me major heebie jeebies. But even then, these scenes do establish things about the vampire world - the stakes they play for, the way they view humans, all that jazz - and even though I really don’t like the parts of the world they show, if I were to write them out, again, we’d have a different world and a different story and I’m back to square one. So no, I guess I wouldn’t change anything. That was a lot of words to say nothing at all wasn’t it?
- Which character would you most want to spend a day with, and what would you do?
Caleb I think? He’s a chill level headed sort of guy and I feel like he could take me to dinner and show me around the city and stuff without getting me killed, unlike 90% of the other characters. Also he’s a fucking nerd, so we’d probably have stuff to chat about. Although we might fight about Stephen King.
- What are your: OTPs, BROTPs, NOTPs?
OTPs: Casskin (obvi), Rheco, Basarbon
BROTPs: Pritkin & Caleb, Cassie & Billy, Cassie & Rhea, Cassie & Rosier, Cassie & Caleb, Cassie & Marco (is it still a brotp when it’s got that father/daughter vibe?), Cassie & Françoise, Ray & Dory, Dory & Radu, Louis Cesare & Radu (again, this is more a family relationship than a friendship but I adore it), Mircea & Dory (ditto), uhhhh so many?? Too many.
NOTPs: Mircea/Cassie, Rosier/Cassie and probably a lot of the relationships that I view as being sort of familial? Like Marco and Cassie for example, I could never ship that. Would feel vaguely incestuous. Also any actual incest ships would be a major turn off for me. No no no hard no.
- Do you have any crackships? If so, what are they?
I think Marlory counts as a crackship for me bcs, like, I never want to see it happen, or if I do it’s in extremely specific ways? Like I’d love to see that Marlowe nurses a secret hate crush that he’d never act on, or maybe little more emergency making out. But I don’t think I’d //actually// want anything to happen between them, mostly because they’d be terrible for each other and also it would crush Louis Cesare and I’d hate that and did I mention how terrible they’d be for each other? Anyway, I still enjoy the slightly-flirty-enemies vibe. They’re a fun dynamic and I’m a trash person ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
- What scene from either series made you laugh the hardest?
I have never come as close to asphyxiating myself laughing at a book as I do every time I read that scene in Death’s Mistress with Dory and Ray’s head in a bag, and the chase with his headless body’s butt hanging out. It’s just Art.
- What scene from either series made you cry the hardest?
I’m a soulless monster who rarely cries at books. Idk why that is because I’ll cry at literally anything on screen but for some reason, no matter how sad books make me, I can’t remember ever shedding a tear. There have been moments that really got to me on an emotional level though - I think I was near tears at Rosier’s big sacrifice in RtS, and baby!Pritkin’s goodbye to Cassie right before that had me pretty worked up. Also pretty much all of Louis Cesare’s flashbacks about his past are heart breaking, I hate those.
- What are your unpopular opinions?
I think that at some points in the books, Pritkin shows the same total disregard to consent that Mircea frequently does. That’s not something people seem to agree with, but it’s not like I’ve gotten actual flak for talking about it, so does it really count as unpopular? I’m not really fussed about whether people agree with me or vice versa tbh, so long as it all stays friendly.
