Okay sorry for the salt but i just watched the age of imprisonment trailer and construct link has me interested but the rest of it honestly represents everything I'm frustrated about with the zelda series right now and I need to rant it out.
(Aimless rant under cut - prepare yourself lol)
So breath of the wild was great. I adored it. It was groundbreaking. I was already frustrated with the lack of story, serious lack of character for link (especially when we'd been on the right track with tp, skyward sword and the wind waker trilogy(?)), and... whatever they did to zelda. But the gameplay and world/environmental storytelling was SO good I could look past it, even though it was kinda missing everything that I love about the franchise.
They do age of calamity. Okay. Fine. I get it, botw was popular and you want to capitalise on that, that's understandable. I won't get started on young impa's design compared to her design from literally any other zelda game (generic anime girl who??) else I'll be here muttering away to myself for hours.
Tears of the kingdom. Jesus christ. Again, great gameplay, had so much fun with the building mechanics. Still lacked everything I love about Zelda, and did it really need to be a standalone game?? Zelda herself was definitely done a bit better. Ganondorf was cool. But hey I didn't finish the game just like everyone else I know because we just got burned out. And oh my god don't even get me started on those lazy ass 'demon king? Sacred stone?' Cutscenes! Which really just encapsulates my main problem with the game - lazy writing. From a series thst has produced some of the most beautiful, nuanced storytelling, that has had effort oozing out of every second of gameplay, it was honestly this that made me put the game down. Honestly at this point I was feeling disenfranchised by Zelda as a whole because of this. It wasnt until I got back into linked universe lately that I realised just how much I still adore zelda and why. It's the charm, it's how unafraid the developers were to make wacky looking npcs or give us beautiful cutscenes, or even give link personality and expressions!
I get that they wanted to divert from the usual formula as it was getting too samey, that makes sense. But to drop everything? And then focus on the same story for the next decade? Talk about samey!
And then age of imprisonment is here, full of characters we've seen for like seconds each. I couldn't give two shits about any of them. Hyrule Warriors was amazing, because it was just this kind of insane hotpot of all of these characters we'd come to love through their individual games. I honestly dont want to know about the age of imprisonment, that's not on my priority list.
Now, make a game that crosses over a bunch of the games from the main series, put some of the different Links together and make them individually playable, even in a warriors like game? That would've been so much more interesting. But nintendo is SO focused on milking breath of the wild, but fail to understand that the reason why breath of the wild was so loved is because of the gameplay, not the half-arsed story. Take away the gameplay and leave us with these incredibly weak characters? Yeah.
Sorry, im just salty and desperately missing my favourite gaming franchise. I wish they'd find its heart again and stop caring only about the money, but it's nintendo.
Even for tokt, the construct were impressive but once the novelty wears off it's very meh. They don't make for very intereresting puzzles since they allow you to bypass a majority of them with a motor bike or the rocket shield.
I just want a good story and dungeons back, it's not like an open world game can't have a linear story, but nintendo seems so obessesed with this idea of player freedom these days (like why is MARIO KART an open world ???) that everything need to be optional at this point. Limitations are what makes a game fun but they don't want to "limit the player freedom"...
The problem is that totk and botw were praised for that and made a shitton of money so I doubt that we're going back to regular dungeons and a linear story anytime soon. Or moving on from the botw era either tbf
