The codes, like the letters, started as a little game, a fun way to ensure you were in each other's thoughts. They were horribly unintuitive to anyone but you two, surely, but that was more or less the point. Deliberate ink stains made to look accidental, strange curls on letters, deviations in capitalization. I love you. I think of you all day. I miss your taste. Her affection always hides in plain sight, even in person, shining through in the smallest of ways: the fixing of your collar, the tilt of her mouth and the warmth of her gaze when it falls on you. Why should this be any different?
You miss her, but you’re used to that. Even before the Petrova taskforce, before Project Hail Mary and before all the crimes she committed to make it work got her locked up, you rarely had a true monopoly on her time. She lived out of her suitcase even at the best of times, and that was fine, because you had her letters to read and reread and her shirts to use as your pillowcase and her calls to look forward to. You've never really minded waiting for her, as long as you knew for certain that she would come back — and she always, always comes back.
Wait for me, is what she writes, but between the lines, you read, I am coming home to you, no matter what. Soon.
