— jen’lu was hatched within crèche y’llek in the old rosymorn monastery , and she was the very last egg to hatch , as well as the smallest. her egg was almost destroyed , as the githyanki have no tolerance for weakness , even pre-hatching — but the pale , pink gith broke free of her shell at the last possible moment. the kith’rak at the time spared jen’lu , though she was the runt of the others , giving her time to prove herself. and prove herself she did. she learned at a very young age , around five years old , that it was kill or be killed. people underestimated her because she looked a little different than everyone else , and because she was smaller than everyone else , but the bullying only made her that much stronger. only made her want to prove herself that much more. jen’lu was top of her class for years , even the inquisitor himself claimed she would be one of vlaaktih’s finest warriors when she was only ten.
— there was a girl named ser’ru that jen’lu grew up with as a training partner , and she would always try to be jen’lu’s friend. but jen’lu didn’t believe in having friends , especially not friends you might have to kill one day. a few years pass , and the two become closer and closer , until a full blown friendship blossomed at the age of fourteen. jen’lu loved ser’ru. but she knew that love isn’t what they exist for , and she tried to end her friendship with ser’ru. however , ser’ru started to tell her of orpheus , mother gith’s first and only son , and telling her that this isn’t how things were meant to be. tries to convince jen’lu that their people have been enslaved by vlaakith under false pretenses for a thousand years , but jen’lu doesn’t listen. tells ser’ru that it can’t be true. in fact , she reports the heresy to their kith’rak [ as she was taught to do ].
— their kith’rak ordered ser’ru and jen’lu to fight to the death [ reminder , both are still only fourteen years old , and their kith’rak ordered this because she’s been noticing how close the classmates have grown , as a way to test her top student’s resolve ] , which jen’lu had not been expecting. another thing she hadn’t been expecting ? for ser’ru not to fight back at all , completely opening herself up to jen’lu’s blade. jen’lu begs once for the kith’rak to stop this , that she isn’t even fighting back — but that doesn’t matter. their kith’rak grows impatient , and says that if she doesn’t end this now by killing ser’ru , one of the others would simply step up and kill them both. the last thing ser’ru says is , ‘it’s okay. i’ll be free,’ before jen’lu’s sword pierced directly through her only friend’s stomach and out her back.
— jen’lu broke down when she finally had privacy , away from the watchful eye of her kith’rak. that is her biggest regret in life , killing her best friend. had jen’lu not reported ser’ru to their kith’rak , then just mere hours after their fight that would have never taken place , an army of humans would would storm crèche y’llek , and they both could have escaped in the chaos. instead , only jen’lu escaped. and barely. in the heat of the moment , and in the height of her mourning , the young teenage githyanki felled many humans and githyanki alike while she fled the crèche , but eventually she was cornered and outnumbered by humans outside of the monastery. a wandering monk , also a human but unrelated to the humans assailing the crèche , spotted her and downed the four men while completely unarmed , with only his hands and feet. his name was zoho.
— zoho let jen’lu travel with him , even though she was quite rude and crass and apathetic to him in the beginning. he taught her how to loot and steal without resorting to violence and killing , and showed her the importance of compassion. he also taught her about ki , and how the strongest of all magic and power comes not from gods but from within. he taught her about reincarnation and it was a comfort to think that ser’ru might still live on as something else now. by the time they make it to zoho’s destination near baldur’s gate , a small monastery mostly inhabited by open hand monks and sages , jen’lu decides she wants to be an open hand monk as well.
— over the next twelve years , jen’lu [ who starts going by lulu ] learned incredible self discipline , overwhelming compassion , only using violence when absolutely necessary , but also being capable of violence when the time calls for it. she finally feels ready to start adventuring on her own , because there is so much of the world she wants to see. so much she wants to do. she never thought she would have a future , she thought for sure she was going to die before ever leaving that crèche. and sure , she may not be one of vlaakith’s best warrior’s , but she often finds herself thinking about what ser’ru said about orpheus and wonders if any of it was true. but she wants to find out. and she just barely makes it into baldur’s gate when she’s abducted by none other than a ghaik ship.
— lulu is the one who very reluctantly mentions the fact that there is possibly a crèche nearby in the first place , to lae’zel. because though she definitely doesn’t want to step foot back in that place , as far as she knows , a zaith’isk is the only means of purifying themselves of their tadpoles. she would tell them she would lead them to it , but refuse to actually go near it — until later on when they actually arrive , and she is more invested in the party and desperate to be rid of the tadpole. it’s been thirteen years since she’s been back to crèche y’llek , she was fourteen when she last stepped foot on even the monastery grounds. however , she definitely needs a disguise person spell if she goes inside unless you want to aggro quite a few of the elder giths within the crèche that might recognize her as hshar’lak.
— she sticks with lae’zel during and after the nautiloid crash , mostly because of what she’s been taught about mind flayers in her upbringing , she knows having another gith as an ally in this ordeal would be the most beneficial thing. however , lae’zel makes her … uncomfortable. basically , lae’zel gives her mad ptsd and is just a reflection of what she almost was and could have been had she not escaped her own crèche. she tries not to reveal too much about herself , and the fact that she escaped a crèche and spilled githyanki blood to do it , in case lae’zel were to try and kill her for it. as a companion character , she can be recruited right alongside lae’zel trapped within the suspended cage near the grove.
— personality wise , she is typically very soft spoken and sweet. she likes wearing vibrant colors [ especially blue and pink , just because those are her favorites ] , not only because it’s cute — but because she likes to be perceived as least threatening as possible. people tend to see a githyanki in the street and become extremely fearful , uneasy or defensive. she overcompensates for the infamous cruelty of her species with an abundance of kindness and compassion. she wears a lot of vibrantly colored robes , or anything she can move freely in. she likes expressing herself , her style , her opinions , her desires , her feelings — for so many years she was made to keep everything to herself , anything outside of training to serve nothing but vlaakith just didn’t exist. and for so long , she truly believed that ascending is all she ever wanted , until she felt love for the first time.
she is incredibly friendly , and will typically spark up conversations about cultural backgrounds and histories because she is always so interested in learning how everyone’s upbringing might shape their perspectives so she can more easily put herself in other people’s shoes , but it often comes off as nosiness instead of genuine interest in understanding someone on a deeper level.
