Kenny's Song of the Day- Day 1

"Hard Times" • Gillian Welch

This song is widely regarded (aka me and my family) as one of, if not THE saddest song ever written. It's such a simple story, but everything about the song just... rends your heart in half. Everything about it.

Gillian Welch and David Rawlings are one of my favorite musical duos ever. Their voices are perfect together, the sinplicity of their songs (usually just a banjo, an acoustic guitar, and two beautiful voices), and I guess there's also the sentimental factor for me. But this song in particular is so beautiful to me. The way the song picks up about a third of the way in, even though it's incredibly gentle and soft throughout the whole thing.

I have such a strong mental image connected to this song, as well as a snippet of a memory. I couldn't begin to actually explain what this song means to me, I think. It's a really powerful song that definitely means different things to different people. I really suggest listening to this one when you aren't already sad. Or do it then specifically idk
