7 years ago I made a little comic about feeling little as I was preparing to leave my hometown and begin a new adventure. Words cannot convey just how much my emotions have changed during this time, and how much joy I feel from the places and spaces that I now get to fill.

New Years 2025 marked the 20th anniversary of my first trip to Japan. I spent three weeks in Hannō city in Saitama prefecture as an exchange student and was completely changed by the experience.

I wanted to recreate a photo I took at the Yamiyanagi Inari Shrine during Hatsumōde. I remember walking there as it was beginning to snow and being handed a warm Amazake. The community spirit was strong in the small town, and people of all ages gathered at midnight to offer their prayers for the year.

Far from home, I was moved by the atmosphere of festivity and the moment of cultural significance, and it remains one of my most cherished memories.
