SOMETHING TO MENTION: Since I know some of my followers/friends on here don't really read nsfw fanfics or anything I'm just gonna tag nsfw stuff as "nsfw things" so that if you don't wanna see me reblog or post about nsfw stuff you can ignore it. Same thing goes for dark content as well. I'm gonna tag it as "dark content things" so that you can also ignore it if it's not your cup of tea. I do write angst a lot but not all of it is dark and I'll make sure to tag it correctly if it is. I just don't want anyone to feel uncomfortable if they only follow me for certain things. Anyways that's it, love you guys đŤ°

âAlright, the doctor will be here to see you soon.â Exiting the patient's room, you let out a breath you didnât know you were holding. Itâs been nonstop call lights, new patients, or some sort of alarm going off to tell you a patient's oxygen or blood pressure is low. Hell, you havenât even been able to sit down and do your charting. The stress was making you lose your mind.
âDonât pass out on us now (Y/N). Still got five hours.â Chuckling, Nami types on her own computer, charting her patients.
âEasy for you to say. Your patients arenât all trying to rip out their IVâs or asking for water every two minutes.â Putting hand sanitizer on your hands, you finally sit down. A sigh of relief leaves your lips. You grab your water and quickly chug down the cold liquid. âAhhhâŚthis stainless steel water bottle is the best thing I've ever invested in. Canât imagine how I lived without it.â
âFeel better?â
âMuch.â Scooting closer to the computer, you log in. Showing all the patients' charts. âOkay, got to lock in and do thisâŚâ Your fingers type away, adding enough detail to get your point across and to quickly access the other patients' charts.
BEEP! BEEP!
The sound of a call light pulls you from your determined trance. Looking up, you see one of your patients' lights on. Hanging your head in defeat, you go to answer it, yet Nami stops you.
âI can do this. Iâve finished my charting, so Iâll do this while you finish yours.â
âThanks, Nami, you're a lifesaver.â Turning back to your computer, you continue. The quicker you get this done, the faster youâll be able to go on lunch break.
It didnât take long for Nami to get back, a smile on her face. âJust some questions on how long the doctor is going to take.â
âAh, I see. Which doctor does it say on the board again?âÂ
âHmm, let's seeâŚoh, it's Law.â You could see Nami smirk out of the corner of your eye as she sat back down in her seat. âSeems like your crush should be here any minute.â
Feeling your face heat up, your eyes snap up to Nami. âShut up! Be quiet! What if he hears you?!â Whispering, your eyes look every which way to make sure the man in question wasnât near.
âOh, come on. Everyone knows you like Law. Itâs so obvious a child could see it.âÂ
âItâs not that obvious! Is it?â
âOh girl, if you were a fly on the wall to see your reaction when he comes over, youâd know.â Namiâs words have you shrinking in your seat as you feel embarrassment wash over you.
âOh god, I hope you're lying. Please lord let it be a lie.â
âMaybe this is your sign to ask him out? Have a little office romance?â The teasing words only fuel your embarrassment. If the world could swallow you whole, you hoped it would.
âYou're the worstâŚâ Grumbling, you sit up as you can practically hear your heart beat in your ears. âIâm gonna remember this the next time you need a favor.â Nami chuckles, her laughter drowning at the sound of footsteps coming from behind you.
âWhich room was it?â
Lawâs voice comes from behind you, and you swore you felt your soul leave your body. How long had heâd been standing there? Did he just show up? Had he heard all of it? Oh god, you hoped he didnât hear anything.
Turning to face him, your heart beats against your ribs viciously. âOh, itâs room seven. They're here for trouble breathing and back pain.â Law hums and nods before turning to go to the room. Once gone, you see Nami smirking at you.
âThat went well. So, when are you gonna write your vows?â
âNami, I swear to god.â
âCome on (Y/N)! Just go ask! The worst he could do is say no, right?â
âIf he says no, I'm stuck with the awkwardness! How would I be able to show my face at work after that?â Putting your head in your hands, you think to yourself. The thought of asking him was terrifying, even more so when imagining all that could go wrong.Â
âIf he says no, that's okay! There's plenty of fish in the sea. Maybe if you try to hang out with him more or talk to him instead of watching him from afar like a shy schoolgirl.â Nami's words have you thinking. Maybe sheâs right. Perhaps if you spent more time with him, heâd be easier to approach and ask on a date. âHow about you take your lunch when he does? That might be a start.â
âThat'sâŚthatâs actually not a bad idea. Do you know when his lunch is?â Standing a little straighter, you began mentally planning.
âI think maybe 2 pm? He waits in his office usually, but he does sometimes eat in the employee breakroom.â
âNote taken. Wish me luck then, haha.â Despite your nervous laughter, a small flicker of hope bloomed in your chest.
~~~
You had spent the entire night baking cookies, hoping to coax Law into grabbing one so you could talk to him. Hopefully, itâd work, as handing out cookies was the first thing you could think of. Besides, everyone loves cookies, right?
Giving yourself a pep talk, you knock on Lawâs office door, heart beating in your chest. âHey, Law? Itâs nurse (Y/N). I made some cookies and thought you might like some?â There was a silence before the door opened, showing an exhausted-looking Law.
âAre you okay, Law? You donât look too good.â Examining his face, you notice the bags and dark circles under his eyes. Even more than usual. âDo you need some water? Coffee?â
âNo, Iâm fine. Just been here too long.â He murmurs, running a hand through his hair.
âHave you been here since yesterday's shift?â Eyes wide, you watch his cheeks flush as his eyes flicker away before looking back to you.
âLost track of time. Itâs been busy.â
âYou still have to take care of yourself first, Law. Itâs already enough that you work here as a surgeon and pick up ER doctor shifts. Now you're staying a full twenty-four hours and more?â Frowning, you look over his shoulder, coffee cups from the breakroom scattered along his desk and in the trash. âHave you even drunk water?â
âListen, I appreciate the worry. But Iâm fine (Y/N). Really.â Despite his words, you couldnât help the hurt and worry still running through your veins.
âFine, but you're going to drink some water. As a doctor, you should know itâs bad for you.â Law wavers you off before looking down at the box of cookies in your hand.
âWhat kind of cookies are they?â
âCookies that arenât for you. People who drink water and sleep get cookies. Youâll get cookies when you drink some water and take care of yourself.â
âThat's ridiculous. Iâve been here forever, give me a cookie.âÂ
âWhoâs fault is that?â There was a silence between the two of you. His eyes look into yours, making your heart jump from your chest. âFine, but only one!â Holding out the cookie tin, you watch Law take a cookie. His smirk makes your legs feel like jelly as he takes a bite before walking back into his office.
âHey! Say thanks at least!â You huff, annoyed as Law closes the door with a chuckle. Leaving you standing in the hallway. âJerk.â
After getting back from Lawâs office, you sit in a chair, getting mentally ready to start a new day. Heart still beating constantly as the memory of Lawâs eyes staring into yours fresh in your mind. The sight of his smirk and the sound of his laugh giving you butterflies.Â
âGood morning (Y/N). How was your night?â Namiâs voice breaks through your thoughts, making you sit up straight.Â
âOh! Iâm good. Made some cookies, obviously. Want one?â
Grabbing a cookie, Nami looks at you with a smirk as she unloads he things next to you. âAnd I saw you talking to Law. Seemed pretty cozy for offering a cookie. You even got him to laugh.â
âI know, right!â You whisper, feeling giddy. âMy heart's working overtime! But I'm worried about him. Heâs been here a full twenty-four hours.â
âThat's just Law. Heâs always been a workaholic.â
âI think Iâd lose my mind if I stayed here any longer than the scheduled hours. Hell, I'm barely managing to stay sane while working. They should make him go home and sleep.â
â(Y/N)! Youâve got a patient coming!â The charge nurse's voice calls out to you, making you look over your shoulder.Â
âAlright! Sounds good!â Getting up, you move toward her and grab the papers, ready to meet the new patient.
Upon entering the room, you see a woman holding her hand, looking in pain. âHello, (....) right? It says here that youâve come in for a sprained wrist?â Going to the monitor, you hook her up to the blood pressure cuff and oxygen monitor.
âYes. I was at work, and a heavy object fell on top of it.â
âOkay, any other pain? What would you rate said pain?â
âIâd say a six. I would rather really talk to a doctor if you donât mind?â Her words slightly catch you off guard. Youâve only spoken a total of three sentences to her, and she already wants a doctor?
âOh well, I guess Iâll have the doctor come in soon-.â
âPreferably, Dr. Law? He's been my doctor all the time, and I only feel comfortable with him.â
âI can see what I can do, but I won't make any promises. Iâll be right back.â Leaving the room, you're left feeling confused. It wasnât uncommon for patients to want to switch nurses and doctors in certain scenarios. But she barely let you get a word in or access her.
âAlright, whatever, itâs still early.â Taking a deep breath, you look up at the board. âOkay, whose doctorâŚâ Looking along the chart, you find your patent. Thankfully, Law was already assigned to be her doctor.Â
âThat makes things easier.â Turning, you try to spot Law, hoping he was out of his office. To your relief, he was.Â
âOh! Dr. Law! My patient would rather talk to you than me, so when you're able, can you go see her?â
Law walks up to you to look at the paperwork in your hands. âTell me what you know so far.â
âHer name is (....) (.......) and sheâs here for a sprained wrist injury from work-are you okay?â As you explain, you see Lawâs face darken with exhaustion, even more than usual. âDo you know the patient?â
âItâs fine, Iâll get it done.â Grabbing the paperwork from your hand, he makes his way to the patient's room. His fingers skimmed against yours, and it felt as if your heart was going to jump out of your chest. Quickly composing yourself, you walk back to your station next to Nami.
âSo whatâs-â Nami shushes you as soon as you get close.Â
âBe quiet and listen.â Raising a brow, you go quiet and listen closely to what Nami is talking about. It came from your patient's room. There seemed to be a bit of arguing coming from inside it. You lean closer as a bit of worry fills you. He was in there all alone. What if he needed security?
âYou're always at work! Never answering my calls or texts! How else was I supposed to talk to you?!â
âIâm working, that's why you canât get a hold of me! I wouldnât have to work so much if you got a job!â While the woman's voice was louder, Lawâs was quieter, as if trying to keep the conversation private.Â
âYou know how bad the job market is!â
âIt's bad when you donât put in any applications!â
âIâm your girlfriend! You should want to take care of me!â
The woman's words have your heart dropping to your stomach as devastation fills you. Law had a girlfriend? Since when? How long? All sorts of questions fill your head as your face falls, and you stop trying to hear their conversation. Putting your head in your hands, you stare at the desk, trying to ignore Namiâs pitying stare.Â
âDang (Y/N), Iâm sorry that super sucks. I didnât know he had a girlfriend either.â Taking a deep breath, you try to hold back the tears that threatened to slip. You knew you shouldnât cry, that it was just some crush and not like you were in love with him, right? So why did it hurt so bad?Â
âItâs okay, really, Iâm fine. After all, it's not like I was in love with him. That's silly.â Letting out a forced chuckle, you wipe your eyes. The heavy feeling in your chest still strong. Sniffling, you take a deep breath and try to sit up as best you can.Â
When Law finally comes out, he runs a hand through his hair and sighs. He couldnât believe she would fake an injury to see him at work just so she could yell and potentially blurt out his private life to his co-workers. Heâs a very private person, so having his relationship problems out and known sounds like hell.Â
âDonât worry about discharge papers, sheâs already gone.â When Law looked at you and Nami to give you the update, he noticed something was wrong.Â
He saw your eyes were red and puffy, as if youâd been crying. The way you let out a singular sniffle and how your hands trembled while trying to type. He heard a shaky breath leave your lips. A sense of worry blurs in his veins. Itâs weird seeing you as anything other than the overwhelming ball of happiness that he saw you as.Â
â(Y/N), are you okay? You donât look too good.â
âOh, Iâm perfectly fine! Just had a piece of food go down the wrong tube is all!â Brushing off his concern, he saw that you checked out (....) from the system as being seen and discharged. Yet despite your explanation, he felt like there was more to the story. But he wasnât going to pry; it wasnât his place to.
âHmm. Just be careful next time.â Law nods before walking away, making his way towards his office. Dealing with (....) gave him a headache. How was it his fault that he couldnât respond when heâs the only one who works to pay the bills? And her coming in, accusing him of sleeping with some nurse and refusing to be quiet about it, and trying to air out his problems? It was infuriating and frustrating enough for him to seek out his ibuprofen.Â
~~~
The day felt much slower after learning about Law being in a relationship. Each second felt like a year as you tried your best to keep going on as if nothing had happened. To put on a smiling face for patients and co-workers. Especially Law. Heâs the person you're trying to hide your emotions from the most.
All the past interactions replay in your head. Each small act you thought meant something was crushed under the weight of knowing you looked too much into it. SO desperate to have him like you back, while he already had a girlfriend. The thought made you feel like a home wrecker. Sure, you didnât ask him on a date or kiss him or anything, but it still felt wrong even if you hadnât known.
Before learning he was taken, you would imagine little scenarios with the two of you. Asking him out on dates, a first kiss, and many others. Now it all felt like you were doing something wrong. Going after a taken man. It made your head spin.Â
â(Y/N), how are you feeling? Weâve only got two more hours until we can go home and have the rest of the weekend off.â Sitting down next to you, Nami could see the sadness in your eyes. An almost defeated and guilty look.Â
âYeahâŚItâll be nice.â Taking a deep breath, the thought of being away from Law sounded great and horrible at the same time. Not being sad, yet remembering the whole moment you learned of his relationship status wasnât how you wanted to spend your four days off.Â
âHow about we go out for drinks? Happy hour makes things so much fun and cheaper.â Namiâs smile barely eases your hurting heart.
âI just feel so stupid. How did I not see that heâs taken?â Running a hand over your face, you feel the weight of the day pushing on you.Â
âHey, no one knew. And itâs just us that knows, as far as I know. Plus, we knew he was a private person, so donât feel so bad.â She rubs your back to soothe you.
âI just canât understand why it hurts so bad? It was just a crush. It shouldnât feel like thereâs a butcher knife carved in my heart and soul.â
âYou're just a sensitive soul, that's all. No biggie. Just take a deep breath and imagine that good, tasty cocktail waiting for you after work.â With Namiâs bright smile looking at you once more, you give her one in return, even if it was simply a twitch of the lips.Â
âThanks, Nami, you always know how to make me feel better.â
âThat's my job as your best friend. Making you feel better and to tell you that you're too pretty to be crying when you're such a catch.â Each word that came from Namiâs mouth made your confidence a bit bigger, allowing you to stand up straighter.
âYeah. Yeah, you're right.â Even though your heart still hurt, you could feel the heat in your cheeks at her compliments. âLetâs get this shift over with and eat away our paychecks.â The two of you high-five, fully ready for the happy hour.
~~~
Opening the door to their shared hours, Law groans. He knew what was coming: a slurry of complaints if he was unlucky and the silent treatment if he was.
âIâm home.â Not even getting both shoes off, he heard the sound of stomping feet coming in his direction.
âTook you long enough! Did you have fun with your little nurses?â
âThey're my co-workers (....) Nothing is happening between us.â Pinching the bridge of his nose, Law tries to wind down after the twenty-four-hour workday. âGod forbid I work to pay the bills. Iâm the only breadwinner here since you donât work, no matter how much I ask. What the hell do you even do?!â
âI clean and cook! I do all our household stuff!â
âThere are dishes in the sink!â He can see the pile of dishes from when he was last home. The cat box wasnât done, even though it was her turn to do it. Not one thing looked different.
âAdmit it! You werenât doing anything except raising hell at me through my phone for working!â
Law slightly pushes (....) out of the way with his shoulder, making his way to the bedroom. He wanted to get out of those damn scrubs. The need to wash away all the work and grim gathered from the hospital. Even though he walked away, he could still hear (....) yelling.
âJesus christ.â He runs a hand through his hair, taking a deep breath as he moves and starts the shower. As the water hits his skin, a small bit of tension leaves his shoulders. Warm water flows down his skin while he thoroughly scrubs his hair and head. Bubbles going down the drain as Law imagined himself anywhere but âhomeâ.
âDr. Law, this is the new nurse (Y/N). We were hoping that since you're free, you might be able to show her the ropes?â The process of training a new nurse was usually left to the other nurses. So either the nurses were short-staffed or didnât have the time. He guessed that it wouldn't hurt.
âFine, but only this once.â Law motions you to follow him, ready to show you around the ER. There was a moment of awkward silence before he heard you speak up.
âSo long have you been working at the hospital?â Not being one for small talk, he tried to answer quickly.
âA few years. Got in after school.â
âOh, cool! I just finished school, so Iâm a little nervous, you know?â A nervous chuckle left your lips as you twirl your badge in anxiety.
âItâs a common feeling among people who get new jobs.â Both of you walk along the staff corridor, Law pointing out where things are and the codes to each room.
âThey said that you're also a surgeon, those people who have me shadowing you until a nurse becomes available. Do you work full-time hours for both ER doctor and surgeon?â Your genuine curiosity about his work made his brows shift a little.
âA flip-flop.â
âIt must be rewarding. Helping people in both ways. Giving new chances at life and helping those in fear. Am I sure you have a few stories too, right?â Law watches with renewed interest. While itâs true there are nurses who come to actually help people, it now seems so few and far between. With prices going up, everyone's trying to find a job with better pay or to gain that feeling of power one gets when having someone's life in their hands.Â
âA few. What made you want to become a nurse?â
âMy mother was one. She'd always come home and tell me stories or what she'd done that day. Teach me things that were easy for little me to comprehend. Seeing how much she loved her job inspired me to be one. I want to help people as she did.â Law felt a little stir in his chest before pushing it down quickly.
âWell, Iâm sure sheâd be proud.â
âYou think so?... Thank you. That means a lot.â The sight of your smile made his heart flutter again, then quiet. âBut what about you? What made you want to become a doctor, if I can ask?â
Law stiffened a bit before composing himself. âItâs a long story i rather not talk about it.â
âIt's okay. I won't pry. Should we continue the tour?â
âYeah. Sounds good.â Smiling, just a bit, Law nodded. âI'll show you where the med room is.â
His shower went much quicker than he wouldâve liked. He wanted to stay there longer, but the warm water slowly turned cold. Law quickly rinsed himself off before stepping out of the shower. The chill air surrounded him as he dried himself off before putting the towel in the hamper. As soon as he put his pajamas on, he left the bathroom, wanting to just lie in bed and slip into deep slumber.
A warmth spread across his body, making Lawâs eyes snap open. Confusion fills him as (....) never cuddled him or even shared a blanket, so what was going on? Moving a bit to check, his eyes go wide upon seeing familiar (h/c) locks.Â
â(Y/N)?â Whispering, Law tucks a strand of hair behind your ear. When he sees itâs actually really you, with the feeling of your skin on his, it felt as if his body was on fire. His heart was beating so hard that he thought it was going to burst from his chest.
With a slight shake in his hands, he wrapped his arms around you, keeping you close. Taking a deep breath, your perfume hits his nose, making him relax more into the bed. How long has it been since heâs felt so at peace?
He runs his fingers through your hair slowly, making sure to lightly scratch your scalp as he does. The sound of your content hums rumbling against his chest made his eyelids heavy. A sense of calm washes over him. Taking a deep breath, he closes his eyes with a small smile.
~~~
Sitting up in a bolt, Law looks around his room, hands searching for a body that was never there. Instead of the warmth, there was the chill of the AC. No longer were there two people in the bed; instead, there was only him. No sign of (....) and no sign of you. The realization that it was all a dream settles over him as he lies back down. His eyes trained to the ceiling, the blank white color doing nothing to calm his racing thoughts.Â
âDamnit.â Letting out a sigh, Law looked at his alarm clock and groaned. Of course, he slept through his alarm. Itâs only thirty minutes, but the point still stands. He grumbles before getting out of bed. Another day, another grueling shift.Â
Jumping out of bed, Law stretches before getting ready for the workday. Not bothering to say goodbye or say anything to (....).
~~~
âTrauma coming in room nine!â The sound of an EMT coming over the scanner pulls everyone's attention. All the current tasks now absolute as every nurse and tech gets ready for the incoming trauma.
âOkay, so what's the trauma?â Coming up to the charge, you ask while grabbing everything you think you might need.
âCar crash, victim was T-boned, and his car flipped twice after the other car ran a red light. Unconscious upon EMT arrival.â As the nurse gave you some details, you couldnât help but feel uneasy. It was so early in the day, and there was already a trauma. Something didnât feel right.
The sound of the ambulance echoes in the garage as they brought in a bloody man on a stretcher. They read his stats while putting him on the trauma bed. Glass embedded into his skin from the shattered window. The air bag had been deployed, and they had to use the jaws to even get him out because he had been hit from the driver's side. When they found him, his car was upside down, and he was hanging in his seat belt.
âWe don't know if he has any spinal injuries, but we still put a neck collar on him.â The EMT said as they went to the charge nurse and doctor. Leaving you and the other nurses to clean up the man. There was so much blood that you originally couldnât see the man's facial features. When you carefully wipe off the blood from his face, you swear your breakfast almost came back up.Â
âLaw?!â Fear courses through your veins as you gently but effectively clean up the rest of the blood on his exposed skin. The familiar dark hair and finger tattoos confirm your worst fear.
âWeâve got to cut off his shirt and pants. There are shards embedded in his flesh everywhere.â A different nurse hands you scissors, motioning you to cut the cloth from his body. You swore you could almost feel your whole body explode.Â
Take off Lawâs clothing? Cut off the blood-soaked cloth and see the skin that youâve only fantasized about in the comfort of your own room? With a dry mouth and shaky hands, you cut it off. The threads being cut echo in your ears, and have your heart pounding at your ribcage. Who knew under all that doctor clothing lay such complex tattoos?
âwowâŚNo! Stop! Heâs seriously hurt and taken! I canât be gawking at him like this!â Mentally yelling at yourself, you pull your thoughts together and get to work. Everyone around you focused as hard as they could so they could save their friend and co-worker at the table.Â
Each second that passes, your heart rate rises. Each shard of glass taken out of Lawâs skin made a pinch of your own pain surge through your body. If you felt this way, how would his girlfriend feel?
âDo you want me to call his emergency contact?â
âGood idea. Go quickly.â
Not wasting another moment, you move towards a phone and a computer. Signing in, you go to Lawâs chart to see what his girlfriend's number is. You didn't want to peer too much into his medical history until it was really necessary. It felt like an invasion of privacy, since Law was mostly quiet and introverted. So you quickly find her number and call her.
RING RING RING
RING RING RING
After the second tone, someone finally picked up. âMmm, who the hell is calling me at 8 am in the morning?â Her angry voice caught you slightly off guard, but you recovered.
âHello, is this (....)?â
âYes? What is it?â
âWell, I'm calling to let you know that Mr. Trafalgar Law has been in a terrible car crash and is currently in the emergency room's trauma bay.â You manage to spit it out. It was your first time delivering such news, and you worried you hadn't done it right by the silence on the other end of the phone.
âMaâam, are you still there?â
âIâll be there in an hour.â Hanging up the phone, you hear the dial tone. Relief filled you as now Law had someone to be by his side constantly. To be a support system that you wouldnât be able to fully give as just his friend and nurse.Â
Setting the phone down and closing his chart, you move over to his bedside, watching him get stitched up enough to get X-rays and MRIâs to see any internal damage. Holding onto the rails of his bed, you look at Law.
âIf I didnât know, Iâd think youâd be his girlfriend with the way you're looking at him.â The charge nurse's voice pulls you from your thoughts. She smirked before chuckling and shaking her head.
âI-...I donât know what you're talking about! Iâm simply a worried friend!â Stepping back, you put your hands up in mock surrender, your face heating up. âHow could I not be worried!â
âOh, please, the entire department knows about your little crush. Itâs hard not to notice when you practically light up anytime he comes into a room.â
âReally? Was Nami right, and was it really that obvious?â
âTo everyone but you and Law. Law is a smart man, but a little dense when it comes to noting social things.â Her words donât do much to calm you down, as you just felt embarrassed. Covering your face, you sit down on a chair next to him.
âOh my godâŚI feel so bad. Iâve been crushing on a taken man.â
âAh, donât feel too bad, sweetie. You didnât know. Plus, youâd be so much better for him. Iâve seen her come in before and yell at him, or him getting screamed at through the phone. Iâve known about it for a while. Kept telling him he should dump her, but yet.â
âYou canât say that! I donât wanna get between them! Iâm not a homewrecker!â
âI know.â Chuckling, she finishes her help in stitching Law up. âIâm simply saying. You just have much more in common. More compassion and love to give.â Staying silent, you watch her get ready to transport him to radiology. Bandaging him up, she looks to you. âWanna bring him to x-ray?â
âSure." Taking hold of the bed, you carefully move him. You try hard not to look down at the battered man. Gripping the handles, you push him through the double doors.
âPlease be okay, Law. Youâve got to be okay.â Each step towards the radiology department felt heavy as you feared what theyâd find when they finished the scans.
~~~
âOkay, so we got the scan back.â The charge nurse's voice pulls you towards her desk. Looking over her shoulder, you feel your palms sweat as you worry about what you may find. Crossing your fingers, you listen as she reads off her findings. âLooks like two broken ribs and pelvis. A broken wrist from the air bag, no obvious TBI or spinal injuries. Nothing critical. Lacerations werenât on any arteries and were mostly surface wounds except for the one on the arm.â
A sigh of relief leaves your lips when you hear no TBI or spinal injuries. Yes, there were still broken bones, but nothing life-threatening. When you turn around to look at the trauma room where Law lies sleeping, tubes all hooked up to him. IVâs oxygen tube, a heart and oxygen monitor too. Seeing him connected to so many things had you clenching your fists before turning away to go back to your own work.
When you look at the clock, you see that an hour has already passed by; the stress must have had time fly by. Picking up your desk phone, you ring up the front. His girlfriend said that heâd be here in an hour, and now that an hour has passed, she must be out in the lobby, right? And since Law is back from radiology, she could come back now.
âHey, Iâm calling to see if the girlfriend of room nine has arrived? She can come back now.â There was a silence on the other end before the receptionist spoke.Â
âNope, we havenât had any visitors.â A frown appears on your face before you pull it back. Surely sheâs just a little late. Traffic at this time can always be rough.
âOkay, thank you. Well, give me a call when she does.â Ending the call, you look up at your dark computer screen, staring at your reflection. There were already circles under your eyes, and your hair slightly askew from the stress. Itâd only been the start of the day, and you already looked like youâd been there twelve hours. Taking a deep breath, you stand up to check on your patients and Law. Just one more time to make sure nothing changed.Â
~~~
An hour turns to two, three, then four, and still no sign of Lawâs girlfriend. Not a call or anything. It had gotten to your break time, and she was still missing in action. So, not wanting Law to wake up alone, you decided to sit with him on your break.
You sit next to his bed on a chair, eating your lunch while staring at him in his bed. The sound of his heartbeat going through the monitor echoes in the room. Despite your food being hot, you still felt cold from the chill of the room. The heavy atmosphere of the room almost suffocating.Â
âLawâŚâ Your hand reaches out, but quickly goes back to your side. Each second, your mind wanders. Should you be here? Is it weird? Would he want you here? All these questions swim in your head as you look at him in the trauma bed. âIâm sorry your girlfriend isnât here yet. And I know this is probably weird of me to be sitting here and watching you, considering I'm just a co-worker, butâŚâ
âI couldnât let you wake up alone and confused. Possibly any second.â
Darkness soon turned to light as a groan of pain leaves Lawâs lips. His eyes flutter open, squinting from the brightness. Going to move, he lets out a gasp of agony, his once squinted eyes now fully open. They move around spratically, confused and in pain.
âLaw? Law! You're awake! Oh, thank godâŚâ A familiar voice echoes in his ears as he just barely turns his head to see your worried face. Sitting in a chair next to his bed. Hospital bed?
âWhatâŚwhat happened?â His voice was gravelly while his throat seemed dry. He watched as you contemplated something before scooting a little closer, something that had his heart jump momentarily.Â
âYou were in a car accident on the way to work. Someone ran a red light and T-boned you.â Hearing your words, he goes to sit up only to feel a searing pain in his body. He stood in place as he tried to take a deep breath for the pain.
âYou sustained a broken wrist, pelvis, and two ribs. Lacerations across your body, but the only deep one was on your left arm. You're hooked up to some oxygen and fluids. Brain scans were normal, and no organ damage.â Each word that came from your mouth made his mind spin even faster. Now that he couldn't work, what would happen to the bills? Groceries? Cat food?
âWe called your girlfriend and informed her, so she should be here any minute. Iâm just⌠I'm just here to make sure your lines and vitals are good. Which they are considering your talking, haha.â Even as you tried to ease the tension, it did nothing. The silence that followed weighed heavily on Lawâs chest.
âWe were worried about you, ya know? Got us good, but Iâm happy you're okay.â Your voice held a gentle tone that made a sense of calm wash over him. The way you looked at him with eyes that (....) hadnât shown in forever. Kindness and worry in your expression, both making his heart rate skyrocket in a way he couldnât describe. When he saw you look up at his monitor, he slightly panicked.
âIâm fine. Just processing everything.â
âAre you sure? Your heart rate's pretty high and-â
âIâm great.â
~~~
It was officially six hours before Lawâs girlfriend finally showed up. New hair, new nails, the whole works. You almost didnât recognize her after seeing her yesterday. She mustâve gotten them all done today in the six-hour time span. Hell. Law had already gotten a room in the ICU by the time she showed up, at least from what you saw when getting ready to leave for the day. Not wanting to dwell or pry, you simply walk to your car. Even though every bone in his body told you to check on Law again, you ignore the instant and get in your car, driving off.
Once you got home, you take a shower before starting a bath. Hoping to wash away the stress and feelings that canât seem to leave. But even relaxing in the bath did nothing to change how you felt. It only seemed to make it worse. It wasnât professional or appropriate. You shouldnât have been in the room. That was his girlfriend's job. But if you werenât there, he wouldâve woken up alone.
Even though you told yourself it was still only a crush, the worry and urge to be by Lawâs bedside haunted your every move. Wanting to be the one to soothe his pain and worry. To hold his hand and never let go. Be able to trace the tattoos that were inked his skin. Have the right to endlessly stare into his hypnotic eyes.
Tears of frustration slip down your cheeks as strands of wet hair stick to your clean skin. You felt horrible, crushing on a taken man. Hell they even lived together! Who knows how long for, which only makes your guilt worse.Â
You grab your phone from the nearby sink and open it. Tapping the contacts icon, you pull up Namiâs number and press call. Setting the device on the edge of the tub, you wait and hope she answers.
RING RING RING
âHey (Y/N), whatâs up?â When Namiâs voice came over the phone, you felt the tension slightly lift.
âNami, am I a bad person?â
âWhat?! No! You're one of the best people I know! Who said that about you?! Iâll beat their ass!â
A small chuckle leaves your lips. âWell, you're gonna have to hit me then. Iâve just been feeling like shit ever since learning about Lawâs girlfriend.â
âOh, girl, are you still hung up on that? You didnât know until yesterday. There's no reason to feel bad, people have work crushes. It happens. I mean, itâs not like you slept with him or something.â
âI guess. I did eat my lunch in his room on break cause i was worried about him waking up alone. Instead of him waking up to his girlfriend about his side, it was me. I told him everything as well. I didnât want to go home cause i wanted to check up on him!â Sucking a breath through your teeth, you sink deeper into the bath. âNamiâŚI think Iâm in love with Law.â
There was a silence on the other end of the phone, making your stomach drop. âAre you sure? Maybe it's just the feels still getting to you. After all, heâs our co-worker and friend. Why wouldnât we worry about him?â
âI want to be next to him, like all the time.â
âItâs just tensions. Everyone's feelings are high with the accident, and it shocked everyone. I promise itâs just a worry.â
âAlright, I believe you.â
âJust enjoy your next few days off, drink some tea, listen to meditations, sleep, read, all the calming things. Youâll be okay, you're a strong woman.â
âThanks, Nami. That does make me feel better.â
âOf course, what kind of best friend would I be if I just let you suffer? Get some sleep, girl, you earned it.â
âSee you later, Nami.â Saying her own goodbyes, Nami hangs up, leaving you in silence and now lukewarm water.
~~~
The night had come fast, leaving Law in the darkness of his hospital room. The beeping of his monitors, once drowned out noise, frayed on his nerves. He knew it was important, but itâs a constant reminder of what happened other than the pain. Everything hurt, and barely moving felt like an ice pick carving into the bone. It was like his right hand/arm that could move comfortably enough to grab some water, his phone, or the call light.Â
Tired, Law looked up at the ceiling, counting each speck. It was much better than noticing the silence of the room and his unending thoughts. Because if it wasnât the pain and lawsuit, he was thinking about you.
How it was you he woke up to. It was your face he saw, not (....) when he came to. (....) didnât even show up for another six hours after he was transferred to the ICU, and when she was originally told. Coming in with new nails, new hair, professional makeup, and everything with the money he worked hard for to pay the bills. Money that theyâd need more than ever now, with him out of commission until he heals up enough, and hospital bills. Insurance or not, there would still be bills, and having seen (....) walk in with hundreds of dollars worth of cosmetic junk she didnât need. He remembers how angry he felt only hours ago, as he still barely calmed down.
The sound of the hospital room's door opening made Lawâs eyes open. His eyelids were heavy from the stress of the day and situation. When he saw (....) walking in, he felt his blood pressure rise.Â
âWhat the fuck. What the hell are you wearing?â Law barely held back his anger through gritted teeth. His body trembled only for a second as it remembered the pain.
âDO you like it? I figured I let myself go, and since you havenât taken me anywhere recently, I decided Iâd make both of us happy.â Each word coming from her mouth makes his face hot.
âAre you fucking serious? I got in a car accident, and you donât show up for six hours cause your using my money to get your damn makeup done?â
âYou didnât die, the nurses said nothing lethal. Whatâs the big deal? Shouldnât you be happy I look nice?â
Feelings, his fingers and eyes twitch, he grips the blanket on his form. âGet out. Right now.â
Shocked, (....) looks at Law with wide eyes. âWhat?âÂ
âI said, get out! Get the fuck out and never come back!â
âYou canât talk to me like that! Iâm your girlfriend!â
âGet out before I call security!â Law moves to grab the call light, which scares (....) enough to leave, not without calling Law a few names, of course.
Now that he was alone, in a dark, sterile room, he contemplated what he thought he felt. What he thought he knew. His whole body felt stiff as the fog seemed to clear. The signs he tried to ignore now glowing. Instead of being excited to go home, all he feels is dread. He no longer felt happy to see (...., the voice that once calmed his nerves now only seemed to get on them.
The thought of going back to their shared apartment, of being stuck in a small space with her, was enough to pull his hair out. But what else was he going to do? He wouldnât be able to live by himself until he was fully better. Until heâd be able to stand on his own without being in unbearable pain.
TING!
A notification sound comes from Lawâs phone, slightly lighting up a room. With a pained grunt, he grabs his phone and brings it to his face. When he sees a text from you, he hears his heart monitor track the faster rate.
You: Hey Law, how are you feeling?
Law: about as good as someone who got hit by a car feels like.
You: Well at least you're okay. Does it feel weird being in a hospital bed?
Law: More uncomfortable than people say, and these blankets are trash.
You: Haha, why donât you ask your girlfriend to bring you a pillow and blanket from home? Maybe even maybe even some snacks that arenât hospital food>
As Law goes to text, he stops himself; a question pushes through his mind. Should he tell you about his fight with (....) or would that be unprofessional? He supposed you did text him first.
Law: Sheâs out of town for a few days, so itâs just me.
You: Dang, that sucks. Is there anything good on T.V at least?
Law: Not really. If there is, then it's all grainy or goes out every five minutes.
You: Can never have anything nice in the hospital, huh?
A small chuckle left Lawâs lips upon reading your message. It hurt his ribs, but it felt welcomed compared to the emptiness of the room and annoyance of his situation.
The two of you continue to text throughout the night. The time flies by while neither of you notices. Too engrossed in the other side texts. It wasnât until Law saw a sliver of the morning sun peaking out from under the curtain. He knew he should be sleepy, but he felt wide awake. Even anxious to just see what your next text would be. His thumb hurt from holding his phone and texting since his other wrist was broken, and moving his fingers felt like a nail being jabbed into them.
âHello? Law? I have your medicine ready and a new bag of fluids and such for you.â A nurse opened the door, giving it a few knocks before fully coming in. It wasnât anyone he recognized, but she seemed nice enough, he supposed.
âDid you sleep well last night?â Law glances at his phone, where the messaging app is still open.
âYeah, I slept fine.â
~~~
Holding a bag, you enter the hospital. A comfortable, thick blanket from your own house, along with a few snacks and drinks. Youâve known how cold the ICU can be and how bland the snacks are.Â
âThis isnât weird. This isnât weird. This isnât weird.â That's what you have to tell yourself to make sure that giving a taken man a blanket and some actual snacks is not odd. And text him all night. You were a concerned, well-meaning friend, that's all.
Grabbing a visitor sticker, you put it on your chest before entering the elevator and going up to the ICU. Each ding of the passing floor made you more nervous. Once you were on the right floor, the elevator doors opened. Stepping out, you make your way to Lawâs room. Every step makes your heart pound harder. What would he say when he saw you? Would he be creeped out? Would he tell you to leave?
Before you were able to change your mind, you find yourself knocking on the closed door. Lawâs voice comes from inside, signaling you to enter. With a deep breath, you push open his door, the bag almost too heavy to carry.
âUm, hey, Law. Good morning.â Smiling, you come fully into view. âI just came to drop off some things I thought would make you more comfortable.â Pulling out the blanket, you show the comfy soft texture to him.Â
âI remember you saying you were cold in our texts, so I brought you a blanket from my place. I washed it and everything donât worry. I also brought you some munchies.â A heat rushes to your face as your smile turns nervous.
âReally?â Law looked shocked at the gestures before he rubbed the back of his neck. His own cheeks a slight pink. âThanks. Didnât think youâd do anything like this.â Handing him the blanket, you help put it over his form. It was even warm from being in the sun while driving to the hospital.
âWell, I have the day off, so I thought I might as well come visit you. Hope Iâm welcomed.â
âYeah, of course.â Your heart does a flip as your face only gets hotter. He didnât mind; if anything, he welcomed you.
âThat's good to know. Oh! Uh-â Looking down at the bag, you hand the bag full of snacks to him. â-Just took a guess on what you like based on what you eat at work.â
Sorting through the snacks, he seems to smile more, something that makes you feel like you're on cloud nine.
âThanks really (Y/N). This does mean a lot.â
âOf course! Thatâs whatâŚfriends are for, right?â
âYeah. Friends.â There was a small silence between the two of you, neither knowing what to say to the other.
âWhatâs the plan for the rest of your day?â
âNothing much really. Iâve got the next three days off, actually.â
âDo you maybe want to stay for a bit? You donât have to if you donât want to, obviously-â
âIt sounds great.â Taking a seat on the chair next to him, you already plan on things to talk about.Â
~~~
One morning turned to two, then three, and before you knew it, itâd been two weeks. During that time, Law had been moved to med surge since they deemed him stable enough not to be in the ICU anymore. Despite that, you still visited every day. At least when you were off work or after work. Every time you were there, time seemed to fly.
You didnât think of anything other than him. Not about his supposed girlfriend, how things would go after this, all there was was the moment.
Which is where you were now, on your way to see him. Even bringing snacks to him after learning his favorite food. As you approach the door, you hear talking in his room, Lawâs voice and a familiar voice you recognize as (....). Stopping outside the door, you eavesdrop.
âSo what's the plan Law? Itâs been three weeks and a whole month. Weâve got rent to pay and groceries to get. I need your card to pay for it.â
âThe last thing Iâm giving you is my card. Listen (....), Iâll pay it online, just relax. And Iâll send money to you to buy groceries.â
âWhat? Do you not trust me? You havenât seen me in more than a month, and this is how you treat me?!â
âI havenât seen you because I told you to get out after you used my money, without my permission, might I add, to get a makeover. Just cause iâm a doctor doesnât mean I make enough for you to do something worth hundreds of dollars. You havenât even apologized or tried to reach out, regardless. I had to call you to make sure Bepo was okay, and the non-auto pay bills had not come yet. Or if youâd been looking for a job!â
Standing outside the room, you felt unease hearing th ecouple fight. You knew youâd be nothing but a burden or a point of conflict. Hearing his girlfriends voice makes all your reservations come back, if not worse.
Taking a step back, you move to leave. Plannign to give the snack to him later or probably just eating them to yourself. Whatever the fate of the snacks were, it wasnât going to be there. Not to mention the thought of getting between the couple made a shiver go up your spine. So without a second thought, you begin to try to walk away. Hoping more then anything to not be anoticed by either Law or (....).
âAh! Your 223âs girlfriend correct?â THe sound of a nurses words stop you in your tracks. It felt as if the world had gone upside down. Even inside Lawâs room had gone quiet.Â
Quickly turning around, you raise your hands in mock surrender. âOh no no no! Iâm just his friend! I just came to drop off some snacks, but heâs busy, so Iâll just come back later!â Laughing nervously, you continue to try to retreat. Itâs only when you see (....) peaking her head out of the room that you feel your stomach twist.
âOh, Iâm sorry! I just assumed since youâd been here every day, apologies.â
âNo, itâs truly fine.â The nurse nodded before walking away, leaving you and a now suspicious (....) in the hallway.
âSo, youâve been visiting my boyfriend every day? To the point they thought you were dating him? Interesting.â
âIâm just his friend, really! I donât know why theyâd think that,t haha! I promise there's nothing going on between Law and me.â (....) looks at you with squinted eyes before a flicker of recognition passes through her eyes.
âI recognize you. You're a nurse down in the ER, arenât you?â A smirk slips on her face as she crosses her arms. âItâs not very professional to hang out near patients, or have a ârelationshipâ with co-workers, right?â You donât say anything except take a second to think.
â(....)! What did the nurse say?â Lawâs voice comes from his room, breaking the tension for a split second.
âThink about what I said (Y/N). And choose wisely.â Turning her back, she goes back into Lawâs room, leaving you standing in the hallway.
~~~
âDamn, she really said that? Wow.â You sit next to Nami as you tell her what happened the day prior. âI guess I just donât really know what to say.â
âNeither do I. But I shouldâve just stayed in my lane. It was wrong and dumb of me.â
âYou were simply concerned-â
âIt wasnât just concern, was it though. I actively have a crush on him, if not something more. I meant more to me than just making sure he was feeling okay. I looked forward to seeing him every day, I craved his texts, and stayed up late just to text him till the sun came up. Dreamed of him at night and daydreamed of him in the day.â Sighing, the events of yesterday weigh heavily on you as well as the past month.
âWhy donât you just tell Law what she said? Itâs better than just stopping up or stopping texting him.â
âI want to, too, but I worry about (....) finding it and reading it. Just all worst-case scenarios. But sheâs right, even if I donât want to admit it. Besides, they live together! Even have a cat named Bepo! A cat, Nami!â
âThat can change.â
âI already felt like a homewrecker, Nami, when I found out he had a girlfriend; now I feel even more like one. And now my job is on the line just cause i couldnât keep my emotions in check. God, Iâm such an idiot.â You feel tears begin to sting in your eyes as you run your fingers through your hair, gripping it as you look at the desk. âI worked so hard to get this job, Nami. I canât afford to lose my job. Not with student loans, bills, and everything.â
âDO you really think sheâd actually do it?â
âWhy wouldnât she? If you were her, would you do the same?â
âIâd probably just talk to my lover, but thatâs just me.â Grabbing your hand, Nami runs a thumb over yoru knuckles. âListen to me (Y/N). DO what you need. Look out for yourself. Fate will push you through the doors it wants you to open. But for now, focus on yourself, not some man.â
âThanks, Nami. It helps hearing you say that.â With a small smile, your phone dings with a notification. Looking at the screen, you see Lawâs name on the lockscreen. âItâs LawâŚâ
âWhatâd he say?â
âHeâs asking if I can do him a favor.â Reading the texts, you open it up, your hand slightly shaking. âHeâs asking if I can check his schedule for him so he knows how much work heâs missing and where he needs to use his sick days/PTO.â
âOh, well, thatâs pretty easy. Iâm sure such a small thing wonât matter. Itâs work related after all. Donât worry, just print it off and hand it to him. Simple and easy.â
âSimple and easy.â
Squaring yoru shoulders, you login into the schdueling site on the computer. It was easy enough to print, but bringing it to him was another story, especially if (....) was in there again.
Gathering what small bits of courage you can muster, you grab the paper from the printer. âIâll be right back. Can you watch my patients for me?â Nami nodded with a smile, allowing you to leave.
Each step closer to the room felt like an andded brick on yoru shoulders. Yet you stay strong, itâs just a piece of paper to help a co-worker. Nothign more.
KNOCK KNOCK
âHey, Iâve got your schedule.â Stepping into the room, you see Law by himself, staring at the ceiling. His stitches gone now, only replaced by scabs that were almost healed. There was a cast still on his wrist, along with bruises littering his skin. âLooking better.â Handing him the paper, you plan to leave before he stops you.
â(....) said something to you. I can see it.â The surprise on your face was evident even if you tried to hide it. He could tell by the way your eyes donât meet his. The smile on your face more wobbly than normal. How, instead of sitting down and talking, you wanted to leave as fast as possible. Even if you were at work.Â
âI donât know what you're talking about. Iâm just working and donât wanna get in trouble, you know?â
âWhat did she say (Y/N)?â
âShe threatened my job, Law. Hell,l Iâm nervous just being here.â Law could hear the resignation in your voice. The worry thickened and evident in the small tremble.
âI see.â There was a tense silence in the room that threatened to swallow the two of you whole.
âI have to go to Law. Iâll see you when you come back.â You didnât waste another word as you walked out of Lawâs room. There wasnât much left to say.Â
The room went quiet when you left, not even the sound of his heart monitor broke through his thoughts. Even the warmth of the room was gone, almost as if you had taken it with you.Â
Running his uninjured hand through his hair, he sighs. He canât blame you for worrying about your career. Worrying about something that was your whole life. He remembered the excitement you had the day you were hired; he couldnât take this away from you. Lying back on the bed, Law looks at the ceiling, but it doesnât seem to settle in. All he can think about is whatâs next. Because if he wanted to be truly honest, he knew heâd never be able to work beside you anymore, not just as a co-worker.
supernatrual au drabble. I was thinking about making this but they took this damn show off netflix and i ain't paying for another streaming service

~~~
The light shines through the blinds, hitting you in the eyes. It felt like you had just closed your eyes so why was the sun already out and peering through? Grumbling, you just turn on your side. Letting the sun hit your back as you snuggle closer to your living furnace of a boyfriend. If anything could put you back to sleep, itâd be his arms around you.
âAceâŚâ You groan, moving your body closer to his. âIâm coldâŚâ Wrapping your arms around his body and tangling your legs with his, you could feel his warmth already encase you.
Laughing, Ace turns around in your arms and holds you back. Lying his chin on your head, he rubs circles on your back. âGetting all the sleep you can get before your test? Thereâs no need to stress, baby, youâll pass with flying colors like always.â
âYou're just saying that because you're my boyfriend. It's an obligation.â A pinch to your side makes you yelp and slightly jump as Ace chuckles before pressing a kiss to your head. âHey!â
âI donât want to hear it. Youâve worked hard (Y/N), you deserve the praise.â His words make a smile on your face, as having him in your life was one of the best things that had happened to you.
TAP, TAP, TAP
The two of you stiffen at the sound of something hitting the glass echoes in the bright room. When your eyes finally train on the clock, you feel your heart stop. It wasnât morning, it wasnât noon. No, it was 2:30 in the morning. There was no reason for the sun to be out. A silence goes over the room as you try to figure out who or what was going on.
TAP, TAP, TAP
â(Y/N)! (Y/N), I know you're awake!â
When the sound of a familiar voice hits your ears, you instantly look behind you. Looking through the foggy window, you can see the silhouette of a woman. The bright light now understood to be a flashlight.
You let go of Ace before exiting the bed after slithering out of his arms. Slowly but surely, you moved towards the window. Hand reaching out, you move the curtains. To your shock, there was a lock of orange hair behind the flashlight.
âNaâŚNami?!â Opening the window, you're bewildered to watch as your sister enters your bedroom. Acting like it was a totally normal thing to do, to enter your sibling's window at 2:30 in the morning.Â
âFinally, god.â She scoffs, acting as if you're the problem.
âW-What the hell?! Why are you here?!â Ace jumps out of the bed and stands behind you, ready to defend you and move you out of the way in case of anything.
âCause your door was locked. Now get up, we gotta go.â Brushing off dust, she stands up and puts her hands on her hips. âPack your stuff and let's get going." Her unbothered words give you whiplash. You havenât seen her in two years, and sheâs decided to make an appearance now?
âWhat? No! What are you talking about? Iâm not just going anywhere with you. Especially when Iâve got important things to do! Iâm still in school, Nami, if you havenât noticed.â Crossing your arms, you frown. âSo whatever has you here better be good.â A silence fills the room while you and Nami stare at each other. Ace held you from behind, his arms around your waist.Â
âItâs mom. She's missing.â The room grows cold as a shiver runs down your spine. Yet you quickly brush it off.
âSheâs known for going ghost for a few days. Itâs been our life.â
âNo, it's been a week. It was supposed to be a quick case, but it's been a week and nothing.â
âNami, I donât have time for this. I left to go my own way, remember?â Not wanting Ace to fully know what kind of background you came from. You move yourself and Nami outside. âIâll be back, Ace, okay? I promise to tell you everything when I get back.â
Practically pushing her out the door and trying to walk her out. Annoyance filled your soul as she continued to talk. Youâve left that life for a reason. You wanted a life free of what your childhood was.
âWhy would I want to go back to that? Nami, we were treated like soldiers of war. Hell, we never even had friends cause we were always moving. Seen things that no child should ever see.â
âShe was protecting us. You know the world wanted us dead practically. And you know she's hunting the thing that killed dad."
"And in that time, sheâs gotten a single hint on where it could be. How long do you know if youâll wake up to see the next day? How long are we supposed to be chasing some demon?"
âSo you want to live some life rotting away doing nothing?â
âNo, I want a safe life. I want something with Ace. A normal family. Besides, mom said if I was gonna go, I shouldnât come back. So here I am.â
â(Y/N), Mom needs us. I know she's not dead. I can feel it. But I can't do this alone, okay? I donât want to.â There was a silence you didnât know how to feel. Why now, when life is going for you? Yet as you looked at Nami, there was a small part of you. They were the only family you had left. Not to mention the only ones who saw what was hidden behind the glasses of âreality.âÂ
âDamnitâŚâ Running a hand through your hair, you sigh. âAlright, what was she hunting?â
Leading you to the trunk of her car, she pops it open and shows all the weapons and artifacts sheâs collected. Beginning to dig into the trunk, she begins to pull out papers from a folder.
âIf she went down to (.....), where were you?â Leaning against the car, you grab the papers she hands to you.
âI was doing a different case down in (.....). Mom said she could handle it by herself like always. And that was two weeks ago.â
Reading the papers, your brows furrow. âSix men have been missing in the past three months, and before that, there have been more from the past twenty years. Each year, another man. Itâs been happening more frequently, so thatâs why it's been on our radar.â
âOkay, so it could just be some serial killer? Not really our thing.â
"They've all been MIA. No blood, no evidence, nothing. Now it doesnât help that I got a voicemail from her.â Pulling out a small device, she plays it. A distorted voice came through the speaker, yet it was practically unrecognizable.
âIs that an EVP device?â Smirking, Nami presses a button that makes the device play the same sound in a different tune.
â...I can never go home...â A female voice comes through the device in a whisper, making you and Nami look at one another.
âNever go home?â The question of what could be talking about surrounds the two of you. Standing off the trunk, you watch Nami shut it and look at you.
âIn the two years youâve been gone, Iâve never bothered you or asked you for a thing.â There was a shimmer in Namiâs eyes that made your heart ache. You knew the face of her trying to remain tough any time.
âFine. But Iâve got to be back Monday morning, alright?â
âWhatâs Monday morning?â
âIâve got a test.â
âSo? Skip it. You can reschedule a new one.â
âItâs a college test, Nami. This is important for my grade. If I skip or fail this test, Iâll have to retake the class.â Turning, you go up to your apartment, where Ace is waiting for you.
Grabbing a bag, you begin packing. Clothes, a knife youâve hidden, and a few other things youâve deemed important. You quickly change out of your pajamas and into some normal, everyday clothing. The once-calm, comforting atmosphere is now tense with anticipation and an unease that settles in the pit of your stomach.
Ace comes up behind you, wrapping his arms around your waist before putting his head on your own. âTime to tell me what's up. I can see how tense you are. You can tell me anything (Y/N).â His warmth makes you lean into his touch. Tension slowly leaves as he always knew how to calm your soul.
âItâs just a hunting trip. Iâve got to help pick up some people. Iâll be back by Sunday night, so I wonât miss the test. Iâll even bring you back something. Got anything in mind?â Ace chuckles before pressing a kiss to your head.
âI want you back in one piece, ya hear? That's what I want.â Smiling, you enjoy Aceâs hold just a bit longer, knowing youâd miss this for the days youâll be gone. So youâll soak it up until you're back. âPromise me.â
âYou have my word, baby. I promise that Iâll come back in one piece. If I donât, youâll aid me back to health, right?â Both of you laugh before splitting up. After giving Ace another kiss, you both split. Walking away, you leave the apartment before waving goodbye to Ace. Stepping into the car, you watch Ace in the window as Nami drives you away.
~~~
The wind blows through the trees as the moon shines down on the road. Headlights beam down the highway as a blue car appears from the trees.
âListen, I donât care how many people live there. I need that land. I donât give a damn about the townspeople! Do you realize how much money this could make? Why are you acting like this is a difficult thing? Iâve demolished towns more populated than this shit hole!â Hitting the steering wheel, the older man ends the call and throws his phone into the passenger seat. âFucking ridiculous. I can make so much money there. Prime real estate, but that damn hold hag wonât-ugh!â Just as he goes to hit the steering wheel again, he sees the image of a woman standing still on the side of the road.
She had long, beautiful black hair that seemed to shine in the moonlight. Her eyes, despite still being far away, were an enchanting brown. Almost to the point of being hypnotizing. A flowing white gown adorned her figure as the wind blew it. She stood still by the side of the road, waiting for the older man in the car to stop.
When the car comes to a stop, the man opens the door with a grin. âHello, darling, need a ride?â
Without a word, the beautiful woman steps into the car, her footsteps quiet as she stares ahead. The once-warm car was now cold, which went unnoticed by the man, who was focused on the woman next to him.Â
âWhere can I take you, pretty lady?â Not saying a word, the woman points to a road, giving the man a vague direction. With a smile too big, the man drives fast, his excited face stepping on the gas.
The drive was quiet before the man pulled into an old, overgrown road. Weeds grew along the dirt road, and tree branches lay low on the trees. Countless leaves on the ground and falling from the trees in masses.
Upon getting to the destination the woman said, he feels a sense of unease climb up his spine. There was nothing. All there was was a field. An empty field with what seemed to be a foundation of a house, and an almost fully decayed mailbox barely holding it together.Â
âAre you sure this is it, Miss-?â Turning to the woman in the seat, the man sees teh once occupied seat empty. No sign of the woman. She didnât even leave a hair or say goodbye. Frowning, the older man exits the car and turns off the ignition.
He approaches the ruins of the house, the heart beating too much for his brain to comprehend. Climbing up the decayed foundation stairs, he looks down. The wood seemingly burnt and petrified. Leaning down, he barely touches the wood, and still, black dust covers his fingers. Standing back, the man looks out among the ruins and an empty field. Not even a glimpse of the woman he had brought here.
â...I can never go home...â
The man quickly turned around, thinking heâd finally found the woman, only to be met with empty air. He knows he heard something, but he isnât going to stay and find out what it was. Sprinting back to his car, the man pulled out his keys. Desperately trying to open the door to drive out of here.Â
Once he got in and locked the doors, he started his car and put it in reverse. The sound of screeching tires echoes in his ears as he pulls away as fast as possible. He needed to leave and needed to leave fast.Â
Putting it in drive, he sped down the highway, determined to make it to the other side of the bridge. His car bumps through the woods as he drives recklessly.Â
â...I can never go home...â
The man's eyes widen as he looks into his rearview mirror. To his horror, the same woman sat in his back seat. Staring at him with cold, dead eyes. His scream echoes in the car as it suddenly comes to a stop. The engine turns off completely, even though the car is still in drive and the key is still in the ignition.
Pulling and tugging, the man tries relentlessly to open the car's doors. The lock jammed into place, not responding to the unlock button at all. Even as he banged on the windows and called for help, nothing changed. From the corner of his eye, he could see the woman reaching out ot him. His pleas and screams only grew louder.Â
Before the bridge went quiet and the clouds covered the moon.
~~~
âSo this is the way, right? Now we just have to cross the bridge?â
âYep, but it looks like someone beat us to it.â Pulling up around a corner and seeing a whole group of cops surrounding the bridge and an abandoned car. Nami goes up and parks next to a cop car. Fixing her hair, she turns to you. âOpen the glove box, youâll find our badges.â
âBadges?â Curiously, you pop it open and see a box. Grabbing it, you flip the lid and meet with dozens of fake ideas with random names, but all containing Namiâs picture. Yet there were some badges with your face on them, too. As if she came prepared and ready.
âGet the Marshall ones. Looks like theyâd got all the other big guns here.â Pushing aside the other countless fake IDs, you grab the two you were looking for before handing Nami hers. âGreat lets go.â Hopping out of the car, the two of you approach the abandoned vehicle.Â
âCan we help you?â The man with the sheriff's badge walks up to you both, skepticism in his eyes.
Showing off your fake badges, Nami takes the lead. âMarshalls, we came to see what's going on and how we can help.â
âOh, well, thanks.â Stepping aside, the sheriff allows the two of you closer as he walks beside you.
âSo what's the theory? Considering there's been another one just like this nearby, correct?â
âYep. Almost the same to a T. No connection other than all of them are men, as we can tell. No signs of a struggle, blood, or fingerprints.â
âDid you know the victim?â
âOh yeah. He was a real estate developer here, a big shot from the cities. Said he was gonna help develop the town and help it grow.â
âI see.â
âDid he have any enemies that might have wanted to hurt him?â
âNo, as far as I know it, he was loved by everyone.â
The sound of a car door closing grabs your attention, making you turn your head. A pair of men approaches the car and fast. Not wanting to get in trouble, you elbow Nami and nod your head in the direction of the men. She nods back before turning to the sheriff.
âAlright. Well, that sounds like itâll be all. Weâll keep in touch.â Trying to play it cool, you and Nami speed walk as fast as you can while still being sneaky. You could hear your heart beat in your ears as you passed the two men. When close enough, you and Nami jump into the car and speed away, having gotten all you needed for now.
~~~
âHello, maâam, we're detectives Sammy and Ruby. Weâre here to talk to you about your husband's disappearance.â Holding up another false badge, you met with the teary-eyed wife of the missing man. Clutched in her hand was a tissue as she looked at you and Nami with sadness.
âYes, please come in.â Stepping to the side, she allows the two of you to enter. Once you do, the smell of cinnamon hits your nose full force. All around the house were pictures of the wife, husband, and what seems to be a teenage son. Despite the woman appearing happy in each, there was a subtle tension in the pictures between the father and son. A forced smile on the father's face and a frown on the son's.
You and Nami sit down on the nicely decorated couch. While the older woman sat in the chair. Grabbing another tissue, she blows her nose into it before throwing it away. âIâm sorry, itâs just I never thought something like this could happen to us, to him.â
âItâs okay, Mrs. Thompson. We can see that this is a difficult time. But is it okay if we ask a few questions about your husband?â
âOf course. Anything to bring him back.â She sniffles as she dabs her tears.
âBefore your husband's disappearance, were there any signs of distress or abnormal behavior from him?â
âN-no. He was the same old George. He was supposed to call me when he was near town so I could unlock the door for him to get inside since he left his key in his office in the cities.â
âSo he works in the cities and travels back here?â
âYes, he says he makes more money there. Stays during the week and comes back on Thursday night. He always calls when heâs about to come home.â Her breath was shaky as she grabbed another tissue.Â
âHmm. Would there be anyone that wold want to hurt George? Did he have any enemies?â
âNo! George was loved by everyone!â Out of the corner of your eyes, you see a flash of green hair. Barely visible in the pictures was the teenage son, hiding behind the wall. Despite his weeping mother, he seemed completely stoic. If that was the case, there was definitely more to this than it seemed.Â
âHe really was a good man.-â
âAs if.â Cutting off his mom, the son walks into the room with arms crossed and a scowl on his face. Sitting down in the chair next to the couch, he starts to talk. âThat man was nothing but a two-faced, greedy piece of shit.â His mother gasped as the son spoke with venom.
âReally? What makes you say that?â You ask, genuinely curious to know his version of events.
âHeâd backstab anyone if it meant making a quick buck. Heâs put people homeless after taking buildings where they live and bulldoze it to make some sort of hotel or casino for the rich.â Digging his nails into his skin, he continues. âHe doesnât care about anyone or anything. No matter how many people he screws over.â
Looking at one another, you and Nami absorb the information. Staving it for later. âWas he liked by the people of the town?â
âHad to be if he was gonna try to steal the town from under their noses.â
âIâm sorry, steal?â
âHe was gonna have him and his corrupt buddies turn the small town into an âoutdoor retreat.â Started by making it all from scratch.â Both your eyes go wide as you look at one another at the revelation.
âHe was planning on bulldozing the entire town?â
âYep. And he didnât care about anyone. Not in this town or house.â
âAndrew! You know that's not true! Your father loved you!â
âHe adopted me cause it made him look good in the public eye! He never gave a damn about me! Iâm glad heâs gone! And you should be too! Now he wonât hurt you.â The boy's last words were a whisper as his face was full of rage when talking about his dad, but soft when talking about his mother.
Grabbing his hand. The mom looks at the boy with care. She runs her thumb over his knuckles. âOh, AndrewâŚâ
The moment between mother and son felt weird to witness. Too private. So, giving Nami a look, you both nod and stand up. âWell thnak you for being honest with us. Weâre sorry for your circumstances and hope the rest of your day goes well.â
âThank you, detectives, we appreciate what you're doing.â You and Nami leave the house, and when the door closes, you both leave more confused than when you went in.Â
âOkay, so he was corrupt and screwed over a lot of people. If that's the case, it doesnât make sense that there wasnât anything at the scene. No fingerprints, blood, or even a strand of hair.â
âWell, weâll have to look up exactly how many scandals heâs been involved in and where he works.â As you pass by the park on your way, you notice the sound of children screaming and laughing.
âYou canât escape me! Iâm the lady of the bridge! OOOO!â The small children run as the designated chaser pretends to be a ghost, haunting them. You haven't heard anything of that nature about this town. Could this be some sort of actual lead or just some story?
âTime to do some digging.â
~~~
Looking through old articles and death/birth certificates with no luck, you move to the computer. Maybe there would be something there. Â
After what felt like hours, you finally got a hit on an article about the small town. âHey Nami, I found something, look at this.â Pulling up the article, you feel Nami look over your shoulder. âWoman takes own life after being the only surviving member of house fire.â Scrolling, you continue to read.
âSays that her whole family was killed in a fire. She only lived after she was walking along the highway since she couldnât sleep. By the time she got home, it was too late. It was confirmed to be arson byt they never got the person in prison.â
âSo they had a suspect, but he didn't go to jail?â
âNope. It says it was a big shot real estate agent who wanted her land and burnt it to the ground when the family refused. Never got jail time 'cause he had good lawyers and his popularity. Connections really get you places.â
âHey, wasn't the man who went missing a real estate agent too? Check the other men who went missing. I think I might have an idea.â Printing the article first, you then turn to the folder in your bag, pulling them into the folder without their files before searching the computer. Each one showing up was, in fact, a real estate agent. All of them disappearing on the highway and bridge.
âHmm. Maybe we should go back to the bridge and see if we can see her. Whatâs her name so we can call her out?â
âSays here her names Nico Robin. There's a picture of her as well.â
âWell lets go pay Robin a visit.â
~~~
Walking along the bridge you had visited only earlier that day, the cool air makes you shiver. âSame bridge, most men's vehicles were dumped, and where Robin had died.â Nami inspects the bridge a bit better now that no cops were clogging up the scene.
âDo you think moms already been here?â Looking over the bridge's edge, you stare at the cascading river. Rushing water hitting your ears as the barely working bridge lights and moonlight were your only guides.
âSheâs going after this case, and weâre going after her.â Nami continues to walk, trying to find any clues.
âSo what now then?â
âWe keep looking till we find her. It might be a while.â
Sighing, you push off the railing and look at Nami. âNami, I told you Iâve got to get back by-â
âMonday. Right. Got that test.â Nami turns to look at you. A bit of disbelief was written on her face. âYou're really serious about this thing, arenât you? Becoming a lawyer? Marrying Ace?â
âMaybe. Why not?â Putting up a defensive stance, you frown.Â
âDoes Ace know the truth about you and the stuff youâve done?â
âNo. And he's never going to know.â Tension in the air grew even thicker with every passing second. It weighing on both your shoulders.
âWell thats healthy. But whether you want to or not, you're going to have to accept who you really are (Y/N).â Turning around, Nami continues to walk down the bridge.
âAnd whoâs that?â
âOne of us.â Her answer makes you run up to her before stopping in front of her.
âAbsolutely not. I'm not going to live like that for the rest of my life. Where I'm somewhere new every week, or canât settle down and have kids. Just a normal life.â
âYou have a responsibility (Y/N)-â
âTo what? Mom and her crusade?â Running a hand over your face, you sigh. âNami, if it werenât for pictures, I wouldnât even know what dad would look like.â Your posture and face soften as you continue. âAnd what difference would it make? Even if we find the thing that killed dad, heâs gone and he's not coming back.â There was a moment of silence before Nami harshly shoved you, her eyes glassy.
âDonât talk about him like that.â Namiâs voice was soft, her hands clenching into fists before looking away.
â(Y/N).â The once tension now gone as you both look ahead. There on the railing was a woman standin onto the edge. Her dress flows in the wind as she stares at the two of you. Her black hair frames her face and enhances her piercing eyes. Leaning forward, she plunges herself into the murky, cold water below.
You and Nami rush to the edge, looking over the railing to try to find the woman who fell. Yet all there was, was rushing water.
The roar of an engine pulls you from peaking off the edge. Headlights glare in the dark atmosphere as they reflect the metal of the bridge. There was a silence as the two of you stared at the started car. âDid you leave the keys in the car? Whoâs driving?â Without saying anything, Nami pulls out the keys, and the jingle of the keys echoes in the night.
Engine roaring, the car speeds towards you two. Spinning around, your feet carry you as fast as they can. Heart pounding out of your chest, you and Nami detour towards the railing. Seeing no way out, the two of you jump over the edge. Rather than being run over, youâd rather at least have a chance of jumping into the water. Good thing you were a good swimmer.
Yet before you could fall into the dirty water, your hand grabs the piece of metal that stuck out. Preventing you from fully taking the plunge. Nami grabs another piece of metal from a different beam. The revving engine now quiet as it comes to a halt. Heart beating harshly, the sound of blood pumping in your ears was almost deafening.Â
With all the strength and adrenaline you could muster, you pull yourself up and back over the railing. Once both feet were safely on the bridge, you helped Nami back up to safety. Huffing and puffing, the two of you stare at the now unmoving car.
âCome on. We're going to bed.â Nami says with conviction as she stomps to teh drivers side door. âI swear to god if that woman did anything to my car.â She mutters to herself, a frown plastered on her face, hands gripping the steering wheel aggressively. Not wanting to anger her more, you hop in the passenger seat, ready for her to take off.
~~~
When the two of you get back to town, you go towards what seems like a cheap motel. Pulling into the parking lot, you both jump out and go grab the key to the room.
âOne room, please.â Putting a false credit card on the counter, an older man grabs it and looks at it.
âHmm, couldâve sworn someone with this name came in earlier.â The owner's words make you look at each other from the corner of your eyes.
âWhich room was she in? If you donât mind us asking, sir.â
âTen, I believe. Havenât seen her in a few days. Iâd be mad if she hadnât booked for the full month and paid in full.â Ringing up the card, he hands you the keys to room 15. Thanking him, you and Nami go on your way.
âLetâs go. I need a nap.â Nmai grumbles. âOnly for a couple hours. I donât like that damn ghost being free. After the nap, we go bust into moms room and see what she thought was going on.â
âGood idea. Iâll put an alarm on my phone.â Doing so, the two of you enter your designated room. Throwing your stuff on the ground and collapsing on the bed. âSee ya in a couple hours.â
âYeah.â Yawning, both og you fall asleep on the motel beds. The toll of emotional and mental work wearing on you. It was too much to take in after trying to escape the life you had growing up. Having a normal life was something youâd always dreamed of. So now that you were finally at a point where it could become a reality, something had to just come up and screw it up.
âNami? When is mom coming home? You said she only works for a couple days at a time. Itâs been four.â Worried, your little voice carries through the tiny room. The tv doing nothing to drown out the question.
âDonât worry, itâs just traffic.â Not looking away from her book, she responds. âYou know it's bad this time of year.â
â...What does mom do again? What makes her go away for so long?â Staying silent, you watch as Nami freezes for a moment.
âSheâsâŚa journalist. A private investigator, if you will.â
âWell, what is she investigating now?â
âDo you ever stop asking questions?â
âJust tell me! You're always hiding things from me! I deserve to know too.â
Slamming the book shut, Nami sighs. âGo to bed. Itâs late, and mom will be back home when you wake up.â
âYou better not be lying.â Murmuring, you wrap the covers around you. The comforter encases your body heat. Frowning, you snuggle into the right position. âGoodnight, Nami.â
âGoodnight (Y/N).â
~~~
Breaking open the door, you and Nami enter your mom's rented room. Upon opening the door, the scene of papers plastered on the walls greets you. Articles of newspapers, internet clippings, pages of books copied, notes, anything and everything. There were even threads connecting to everything.
âSo this is what she had, huh? Seems like she was close to figuring out what the case is.â Stopping in front of news clippings, you read some notes pinned to the walls.
âLooks like she already knew.â Pointing to the far wall, the words âwoman in whiteâ were written above. âSeems like we're dealing with a woman in white.â
âThat makes sense. Surprised I didnât see it earlier.â Nami says as she moves towards you. Reading the same notes as you. âWants vengeance, haunts the place of death, and all victims are men. But what do the men have in common?â Turning back to the articles she looked at earlier, she read the men's biography with a more critical eye. Rereading over an dover again, something finally clicks.
âAgents! Their real estate agents! They all seem to have some sort of scandal following them. Almost all of them seemingly about taking advantage or corruption. I completely forgot about this!â
âTargeting corrupt businessmen who she deems worthy of death. It tracks. So we need to get her to pass on. Her certificate of death and such says she was cremated. If that's the case, then something else is keeping her here.â There was a silence between the two of you before Nami seemed to perk up.
âI got it! Sheâs here for revenge cause he familyâs killer was never tried for. Sheâs still here till the dudes rightfully convicted.â
âConvict him, and sheâs gone. But she died years ago, how do we know if the dudes still alive?â
âPull out your phone and look up the name. It says the name of the man in the article we read yesterday.â Doing as she says, you pull out your phone and begin to search. There was a moment of silent stress. What if he were dead? What then?
Warning: Angst, mentions of death, fluff, semi enemies to lovers (vaguely), your literally handcuffed to him, kidd may be ooc since its been a minute since ive written him so

âHey! Stop!â Running down the street, you try to stop the group of men walking towards the dock. They were walking away from their bill, and it was your duty as a Marine to uphold the law. No matter how intimidating the culprit was.
Stopping in his tracks, the pirate turns to try to see the cause of the voice. When he did, he couldnât help but let out a cackle at the sight of you. A Marine that barely even reached his shoulder, not to mention a girl, nonetheless.Â
âYou talking to me? Bold one aren't you?â Crossing his arms, he smirks. That simple smirk makes your eyes narrow as you look at the redheaded pirate. Of course, out of any pirate group in the world, it had to be Eustass Kidd and his crew.
âYou owe the bartender the tab for all your drinks!â Huffing, you put your hands on your hips. The Marine uniform seemed to shine in the blinding sunlight. âGo back and pay your tab.â
âListen, sweetheart, that ainât happening. Donât know if you noticed, but weâre pirates. We donât do the whole âpayingâ thing. So why donât you scurry off to give some ticket to a jaywalker?â Kidd and his crew laughed, finding your angry face comical.Â
âIf you're a pirate, then that means youâve got the berriâs to pay. Especially one as infamous as you.â
âAh, so you know me? Iâm honored.â
âYeah. A hot-headed brute! All muscle, no brain!â Despite his being so much taller and probably stronger, you werenât backing down. Sure, there were crimes heâs committed that he needed to be arrested for,but you didnât exactly have any sea prism cuffs on you. So, bothering him to pay his tab will do for now.
Narrowing his eyes, Kidd feels his jaw muscle twitch at your words. âListen here, you little shit, consider yourself lucky I donât kick your ass. I donât care if you're a girl.â
âGood! Just cause Iâm a girl doesnât mean you can underestimate me!â Ignoring his threat, you take a step forward, jabbing a finger at his chest.
Kidd looked down at you, annoyed, but a smirk still crossed his face. âIf you wanted to touch me and get a closer look, all you had to do was ask.â
Your face felt hot as you pulled back your hand as if it been burnt after jumping back five feet from the towering man. âHey! Thats-thats not it, and you know it! I would never!â Sputtering, seeing his smug face made you enraged. God, how you wanted to wipe it off with a punch to the jaw.
âSure. But now, while I hate to cut this short, Iâve got better things to do than entertain you.â Turning, you watch as a Kidd begins to leave, his crew following after him.Â
âHold on! You're not-hey! Let me go!â Just as you go to stomp after him, two other Marines grab you, holding you back.
âCome on (Y/N)! You donât stand a chance against him!â One grabs your arms, and the other sweeps your feet out from under you before grabbing them. âSwallow your pride and leave him alone!â The other agreed, holding your struggling form. Desperate to keep you from doing something drastic.

The Victoria Punk sails away from the shore, salty sea air hitting the pirate's nose. A familiar scent associated with home. The ship was restocked, spent some time hanging with the crew, drinking and eating at the bar, and looting a few stores, all around a pretty normal pit stop.Â
Everyone was busy putting things away and planning their next destination. Unaware of anything amiss, the ship. Kidd walks past a barrel full of apples when a familiar face jumps out at him.
âGot ya, asshole!â The cool material encircled his wrist as he felt the strength almost completely leave his body. With sharp and narrowed eyes, he looked down at his hand. Noting the sea prism stone cuffs wrapped around it like a bracelet. When he moved his gaze to follow the rest of it, he saw a much smaller hand with the other cuff locked around their wrist.
Blinking a few times, he looks at you, flabbergasted at how you managed to get on his boat without him or anyone else seeing. He felt his eye twitch before the situation finally hit him. âYou little shit.â Pulling his hand away, he caused you to be jerked forward and pulled out of the barrel.
âAh!-â Shocked at the sudden movement, your free arm flails around before your jolted up and met with two furious amber eyes.
âWhat the fuck do you think you're doing?â He growled, bringing you to meet his eyes even more, your feet dangling off the ground. Despite this, you still meet his glare with your own.
âIâm bringing you in! So come on! I gave you the chance to come and pay your bill without arresting you, but you forced my hand! Now you're coming with me to the jailhouse!â With your chest puffed out in defiance, you try to move in the direction of where the ship used to be connected to the deck.
When you notice the lack of an island and see the seam, a sense of panic runs in your veins. âHey! Where the hell are we?! Stop this boat immediately!â Squirming in his hold, you try to run to the side of the ship, but since you cuffed yourself to Kidd, you only served to still dangle in the air.
âYou donât get to tell me what to do on my ship, you bug. Now, if you donât want my friend to cut you up like a fish, then you better cough up that fucking key.â His glare had made grown men cry, yet it seemed to have no effect on you. If anything, it looked like you took on his glare with one of your own. Heâd be impressed by your audacity if he werenât so pissed. Sea prism cuffs? Making him unable to use his devil fruit power and weaker? Why, if he wasnât cuffed, heâd have squeezed the life out of you!
âAs if! Youâll bring us back to the island where you will face the fullest extent of the law!â Frowning, you put your hand on your hip. The lack of indentation of a key or weapon has your heart stopping.
Patting the pocket again and still no indent, you shove your hand in your pocket. Then the other one, then your back pockets. Each failure to locate the key made you want to scream. Sensing your panic, Kidd feels his stomach drop.
âWhy the fuck are you looking like that? Do not tell me you lost the key.â The two of you move to the barrel you hid in, hoping to find it amongst the sea of apples. Fruit goes flying every which way as you both frantically throw apples out of the barrel. Each one with no success has sweat beating down your brow.
âWhere is it?!â
âHow the fuck did you lose it?!â Both of you began arguing as you got to the bottom of the barrel with no sign of the key. You knew you had it when you boarded the ship, so how did it disappear?
Turning his heated gaze towards you, he narrows his eyes before dragging you towards the railing. He throws his arm over the edge, having you dangle over the crashing waves of the sea. The only thing keeping you from slipping free was the cuffs. It should've freaked you out, but knowing that if you fell, Kidd would fall too.
Pulling a dagger from inside his coat, you can feel your heart stop. âGive me one good reason why I shouldnât cut off your hand and drop you into the sea?â
âCause Iâll haunt you first of all! Second, how do you plan to obtain a key for a military-grade-only sea prism handcuff key? You sure as hell ainât getting it from any willing Marine not cuffed to you. That is, unless you want your own hand cut off.â Smirking, you point out that the only way he was getting a key was from another Marine who gave it to you.Â
âWe could keep her as a hostage. Demand money and a key for her safe return.â One of his crewmates approaches him, offering him some ideas on what to do. He had to admit it wasnât that bad of an idea. Money and a key? Sounds like an easy deal.
âHmm, when's the next island?â Turning around, the crewmate shouts to another one up on the second floor of the ship. Someone shouts back, but you couldnât hear them over the rushing waves.Â
âTwo weeks and a halfâŚâ Hesitantly, the crewmate spoke, seeing the news fully register in the two of your guys' brains.
âWhat?!â
~~~
Sitting across the table from one another, you angrily eat whatever his first mate made for dinner. Even though you didnât want to compliment a pirate, it was pretty good. But you might be able to piss off the asshole in front of you if you did.
âHow come your first mate can cook dinner, yet you canât pick up a spatula and cook to save your life?â
âHow's it like not being able to look at the top shelf?â
âAt least I can walk through doorways without hitting my head.â
âSorry, I canât hear you down there. Did you say something bug?" Kidd could only smirk as you gasped
âIâm not a bug, you brute! Take that back!â Kidd takes a huge bite from his dinner, staying quiet as the tension in the room reaches a fever pitch. Your fingers twitch along with your eye as the urge to just strangle him burns in your gut.
âIf I wasn't cuffed to you, I'd be beating your ass!â Slamming your free hand on the table, you wait for his response. Only to receive none as he kept eating, glaring. His reaction had you sitting back down angrily, eating your food as well.
Grabbing your water, you go to take a sip. The salt in the meal makes you thirsty. As the first sip goes down your throat, your hand jerks. Water splashes all over you and the top of your clothes. You gasp, looking down at your now drenched shirt. Gritting your teeth, you watch as he grins at you, pleased with himself at your distress.
Annoyed, you throw the rest of the water at his face. It covered his entire face, even getting into his hair. The water makes the eyeliner he wore slightly drip down his face.
âAll those berriâs and canât afford waterproof eyeliner?â
âMind your fucking business, I was out!â
âOr you're just a cheap ass!â
âAt least I know how to do mine!â The two of you argue again, insulting one another constantly. Threats to kill one another when uncuffed, and all of the above. It got to the point where the others in the crew left the dining room. Giving the two of you space to scream at each other.
~~~
After a good number of blankets on the floor for you to sleep on, you sit down. Besides Kiddâs bed, you make a little place to sleep for the next couple of weeks. Based on how much higher Kiddâs bed was, your hand would practically be up all night.Â
Sighing, you look up at the ceiling. Blanket over you, as a pillow was under your head. Both of you refused to change in front of the other, so you were still in your damp uniform. The only thing you took off was your shoes and your beloved hat, and even that was pushing it. Who knows what was on these floors? Based on the smell, nothing good.
Closing your eyes, you try to imagine yourself back home in bed. Sleeping peacefully, waiting for the next day and breakfast. But now, you were awake, listening to Kidd get comfy and complaining about having to hold his arm off the bed.
âBe happy you're not the one lifting your arm up all night.â Frowning, you see him turn onto his side, looking down at you from his bed.Â
âShut up, I'm trying to sleep.â
âLike hell you are. You were just complaining, donât bullshit me.â He narrows his eyes at you before moving a bit more so that you could fully see his head from over the bed.
âListen here, bug, I donât care. So shut up. Your voice is grating.â Using your free hand, you grab one of his discarded shirts and throw it at him.Â
âAt least Iâm able to keep a room clean and take a shower. People can actually breathe when standing next to me, unlike your musty ass. Smelling like sweat, metal, and oil.â Kidd jerks his own cuffed hand up, lifting you off the makeshift bed. He grabbed your arm and pulled you close to his face. His breath on your face made your heart unwillingly skip a beat. The amber eyes that glared into your soul are almost enough to make you crumble and shrink back. But you couldnât. If he saw your fear, heâd use it against you.
âIf you want to keep your life, I suggest you shut the fuck up and go to sleep. The only reason you're alive is because I need that key. The moment I'm uncuffed, you're dead.â
âCould say the same to you.â You sneer, glaring back at him. A two-second window felt like eternity, as you were looking into each other's eyes before he dropped your back off onto the âbed.â Grumbling, he turned back to lie on the bed and ignore you. Huffing, you close your eyes and try to get some sleep. Anything to escape this nightmare.
~~~
âHey, can you pass me the potatoes?â Your fiancĂŠ's voice echoes seamlessly in your mind as you happily grab the mashed potatoes.
âOf course! Here, do you want some gravy too?â The sun shines down on the two of you as you sit outside on your picnic bench. Enjoying the sunset as you eat dinner. It was a warm night, the air clear, and the smell of your flower garden hits your nose.
âNo thanks. How was your day at the flower shop? Make any huge arrangements?"
âNope, just basic things so far. Youâd know if you visited.â Teasingly, you kick their legs from under the table. The two of you laugh as you continue eating dinner. Love filled your heart like a high you never wanted to end or leave. Spending the rest of your life with the person in front of you was more than you could ever ask for.
~~~
Sunlight hits your face early morning, making your eyes flutter open. Yawning, you rub your eyes as you sit up, back aching. Looking over, you see Kidd still out cold and hear his snoring. Grumbling, you try to stand up. Sleeping on the floor made you feel grimy. Based on the mess, you doubt the floors have been swept or mopped for eons. While you wanted to shower, you didnât have any spare clothes, and like hell anything of his would fit you. As if youâd wear anything of his anyway.Â
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK
âHello? Captain?â A female voice slips through the wood, making you perk up slightly. Maybe you could borrow some clothes-? No! Those were pirate clothes! You're a Marine! The thought of wearing their clothes should repulse you! Then again, itâd feel nice to be in clean clothes.
âHeâs asleep right nowâŚâ Taking a deep breath, you continue. âCan I ask you a question?â
âOhâŚum, sure. What did you need?â
âHmm, I think I do. Iâll be right back! Try to wake up, the Cap will ya? Breakfast is ready.â
âAre there any clothes I could borrow? I want to take a shower, and I donât have a change of clothes.â Feeling your face slightly heated at the question. Maybe it was the thought of asking for help from pirates, but what could you do? Not walk around naked.
âWill do.â Footsteps leave and slowly fade before turning to Kidd. With your free hand, you hit his cuffed arm. âOi asshole, wake up. Breakfast is ready and I want to take a shower.â He scowled in his sleep as he tried to ignore you.
âWake up!â Grabbing his covers, you rip them off, exposing his skin to the chilly air. âRise and shine! Be an adult and get out of bed! Iâm taking a shower after sleeping on your disgusting floor.â Using your fist, you hit him a few times, desperate to wake him up.
âFine, fine, FINE! Jesus chirst woman.â He sat up, running a hand through his messy hair. âHow exactly do you plan to shower with this?â Throwing his hand up, the chains clink.
âClose your eyes and sit outside the shower. Your hand will get wet but your floor is abhorrent and I want to be clean.â Kidd rolled his eyes before standing up. The knocking coming back quickly after footsteps hurried towards the door,
âIâve got some clothes! And a new bar of soap! You can use my stuff, it has my name on it, Hip.â
âThank you!â Kidd moves closer to the door, allowing you to grab the clothes that House had given you. âAlright where's the shower room?â
Kidd leaves his room and shows you where the shower was. It was just a basic thing. Not fancy, which was okay. As long as it got the job done.
âClose your eyes and donât you dare look! Hell, even turn around the best you can!â Huffing with a hot face, you turn on the water. Kidd did what you said without a word, not looking as you changed the best you could and stepped under the water. Left hand stuck connected, you do your best to wash your hair and body. Hipâs kindness in allowing you to use her shampoo and conditioner wasnât something youâd easily forget even if it did conflict your feelings.Â
The warm water cascades down your skin as you try to imagine what your other crewmates were thinking. What were they doing? Did they notice you were missing? Surely they did. They were probably looking all over for you! Youâd have to quickly clean your uniform so they didnât think you switched sides.
âHurry up, would ya?! Iâve got things to do!â
âNot everyone wants to be a smelly asshole! Let me shower in peace!â Frowning while the suds roll off your body, you roll your eyes. The last thing you needed to hear was his voice ruining your shower. âIâm going as fast as I can with one hand!â
âWell, you wouldn't have to shower with one hand if you werenât dumb!â
âThis is the worst. How the hell does the crew deal with his ass?â
When finally finished, you dry off and put on the clothes Hip gave you. Since you couldnât really put on anything with sleeves, she gave you a tube top to work with. Having never worn one before, you slightly struggle. Didnât help that you had to put on your bra one-handed, but you managed. Looking at yourself, you couldnât help but feel a little self-conscious. You never dress up, especially in this kind of clothing, so in a way, you felt naked and exposed. Trying to hide your unease, you take a breath before telling Kidd he could finally turn around.
âLetâs go. What important thing do you have to do?â Sighing dramatically, you furrowed your brows as you followed him to wherever he was walking. He was silent most of the time, which was odd with the usually chatty captain.
Kidd took you to a room that could only be described as a wielder's paradise. Metal everywhere, tools, blueprints, everything. With his devil fruit power involving metal, no doubt this was a workshop of some kind. Messy, but it seemed to be the kind of mess where he knew where everything was. The smell was overwhelming, and it didnât really feel safe since you didnât have proper PPE.
âYou better not be thinking about using any heat. Especially now that Iâm wearing something soâŚexposed.â
âOh, please, Iâve seen you in less.â
âWhat?! No, you havenât-â A gasp left your lips. â You peeked!!!â Kiddâs face goes red as he frowns.
âItâs not my fault you were the one moving my hand all around when you showered!â Using your free hand, you hit him repeatedly.
âPervert!â
âStop hitting me, you little shit!â Grabbing your wrist, he looks down at you. There was an unspoken tension between the two of you. Neither of you spoke, your hearts racing a bit too fast. Too hard for it to be the reaction of him simply grabbing your wrist.Â
âFine, whatever. Just let me go.â Kidd glares but says nothing as he lets your wrist go. He turns, dragging you around as he gathers things to put on the table. More than half are things youâve never seen before. A part of you was curious, wanting to know what you were looking at. But the other part held you back: not wanting to show interest in a criminal's activities.
So instead, you simply sit on the grimy floor. Upset now that you were once again on an unclean floor.
~~~
Yelling echoes along the halls as he crashes could be heard. A common occurrence now every time something happens that pissed one of you two off.
âHow hard is it to clean up?! Iâm not sleeping on this grimy floor again!â Using your foot, you push around discarded shirts. Boot prints, clothes, metal contraptions, or two scattered the floor, almost hiding it entirely. âWeâre cleaning this. You're a grown man. I shouldnât have to help you clean up your room, but I will.â Doing your best, you begin to clean up what your free arm allows.
âAlright, alright! God so naggy.â Kidd huffed as he began to help you clean his messy room. Scowling, he picked what metal contraptions he could. âI could have all this metal perfectly put away, but nooo, you just had to use sea prism stone.:â
âThat's why it's sea prism. Your devil fruit includes metal, so I couldn't just put metal cuffs on you. I needed you weak.â
âWell, how's that going for you?â
âShut up and clean.â
âThatâs what I thou-ow! Fuck!â Bringing his hand up to his face, he examines it before turning to glare at you. âYou made me break a nail, you bitch.â
âWhat?! No, I didnât!â
âYeah, you did! Itâs your fault. I know where everything is in here, but no her highness needs everything done her way.â Kidd jerks you, moving towards his bed. His stances much bigger than your own, and his movements filled with purpose.
Leaning, he grabs a box from under the bed. Inside were multiple nail polish bottles. All different shades of red with a few others here and there. A small nail kit lay on top, being wrenched open by an annoyed Kidd.
âNow I have to cut all my nails, refile, remove the polish, and start the whole process over again.â He grumbled. Sitting down, effectively pulling you down with him as he began to clip his nails. You watch him, having nothing better to do.
His nails were shockingly well taken care of. Better than your own, which had you feeling a little annoyed. How did a pirate have better nails than you? Ridiculous.
âLook in the box and find me Rimmel's Rapid Red. At least you could do something for breaking my nail.â Rolling your eyes, you just decide to get it over with so you donât have to hear his complaints.
âFine, whatever. But not because you told me to.â Looking around the box, bottles clink against one another. The shimmery red of the bottle when you finally found it glinting at you. âHere.â
âTook you long enough.â Despite the desperate urge to argue, you just roll your eyes and sit beside him. Watching as he clips and files his nails back into the shape they were, but shorter.
âDo you always make your nails sharp?â
âShort nails donât intimidate.â After he filed his nails, he opened a different glass bottle, pulling out the small brush. âNow donât make me fuck up, Iâm almost out of acetone.âÂ
âWhat's that?â
âBase coat. Protect my nails from looking like yours.âÂ
âHey! Be happy I even expressed interest in your hobbies!â
âNever asked you to.â It took every cell inside you to ignore the urge to strangle him. So you just watch him and be quiet. Not having the energy to deal with him complaining about how you âruined his nails.â
It was weird watching a usually brutish man actually take gentle care not to ruin or rush his nails. He did it with a precision that proved heâd done it multiple times before. The silence that covered his room didnât feel as suffocating as it used to. At least not like yesterday.
It wasnât like you didnât hate him. You still did and were determined to bring him to justice. To make him face his crimes. But it was nice to be a little calmer rather than the eggshells youâd been walking on.
You hated to admit it, but you were no match for Kidd, even with the cuffs on. Hell, his arms were practically stone with how much muscle was on them. How the hell were you supposed to fight someone who had a good foot on you if not more? It pissed you off more than anything that you let your ego get the best of you. Leading you to be determined to bring him in, which ended up with you being stuck to him for god knows how long.
As you sit next to him on the floor, you lean your head back against the bed. Tired after struggling to sleep the night before. Worried that heâd attack you in your sleep. While you're struggling to keep your eyes open, the unwanted warmth emanating from Kiddâs body makes it hard to keep your eyes open, so you try to focus on the overwhelming nail polish smell.
He was efficient at his work, you'd give him that. His nails looked as if someone had done them professionally. Something youâd never tried. Why would you? Itâd probably just fall off when doing drills. It also just wasnât allowed. Maybe there was a loophole, but why waste time on something thatâd fall off in one day?
Looking down at the box full of colors, you couldnât help but pick up one to see its color. Mostly red in all sorts of shades, yet there were some other colors. There even was your favorite color. The urge to try your own nails was stronger now that you had your favorite color. When was the last time you actually did your nails? Was it before you joined the Marines? If so, then itâd been so long. Too long.
Kidd tugs you up on the bed before grabbing your upper arm to sit you next to him. He placed one hand on his legs before putting on the base coat he told you about. Even though your wanted to pull your hands away, you decided against it. It wasnât cause you wanted it, no way. Itâs just cause heâd probably do it whether you wanted to or not.
âWhy are you doing my nails? Itâs weird.â
âI refuse to be cuffed with someone with deplorable nails. Now shut up and hold still.â
âDidnât know your vocabulary went beyond obscenities.â
âDonât push it bug.â He growls, his amber eyes staring into your soul.
âTchâŚwhatever.â
Watching him, you could help but keep your eyes trained on his own hands. There was something so interesting seeing and experiencing Kidd working on making your nails nice and not botched. Even if you were close enough to jump him and attack, you wanted to see what it would look like. One moment of not trying to kill your enemy.
~~~
Day four passes and itâs nighttime, the stars and sky shining down through the windows. Once again, sleeping evading you as you stare at the ceiling. The cool floor hitting your body as you try to sleep. But your mind fast as ever. The last three nights youâve barely slept. Sleeping next to your enemy and your own racing thoughts.Â
Mostly thoughts about the one who used to be your entire world. The one who proposed under the stars and got you flowers every week. And the one who died in your arms after being murdered for standing up to a pirate who was threatening the bar owner.
The pirate cut him down without a second thought, robbing the bar owner and left. Not even turning around or blinking an eye when you pulled your dying fiancĂŠ into your arms.
You could feel the warmth of their body slowly fading as your dress soaks up the blood from their grieving wound. Pressing your hand against the laceration, you try to keep pressure on it. Tears slipping down your cheeks. âPlease! PLease someone help me! Help my fiance!â
Despite how much you pleaded and begged, no one helped you. They all just stood there like statues. Ignoring you as the light of your life was dimming in front of you. It felt as if your chest was about to implode with each rapid breath. The lunch you two were eating left abandoned.
â(...) please donât. I promise everything will be okay. Just keep your eyes open a bit longer.â You plead as you cup their face. Blood-stained hands leave a print against their skin. A trembling hand covers your own, thumb brushing over your knuckles.
â(Y/N)...itâs okay. Don't cry.â (...)âs voice was raspy as tears of their own fell down their cheeks. A small, weak smile on their lips. âYou're too pretty to be crying love.â
Touching your forehead with theirs, your tears fall onto (...)âs face. Mixing with their own tears. âPleaseâŚâ A strangled whisper echoes in the silent bar. Your arms only hold them closer as you can see their skin grow paler and their struggle to keep their eyes open. Everything was going too fast. The light leaving (...)âs eyes too quickly. âDonât leave me.â
Sitting up suddenly in the makeshift bed, tears spilled down your cheeks before you could understand. The heartache you felt that day coming rushing back. Using your free hand, you're desperate to try and wipe your tears. Not wanting Kidd to see you breaking down. Biting your lip, you try to stifle your weeping and the shaking of your body. Each breath a struggle as your chest felt like it was gonna collapse.
Your breathing hitched when you heard Kiddâs bed shift and the handcuff rattle. Clenching your teeth, you wait. Hoping heâs just moving around in his sleep and not actually awake. Having him hear and see you crying was the last thing you wanted. Showing an enemy your weakness.
âI can hear you crying.â
âIâm not dumb, I can hear you crying. Just spill what's on your mind so you can stop crying and go back to sleep.â His voice gruff as he moves to look over the bed, his face grumpy.
âI donât know what you're talking about.â Even though you tried to hide the stiffness in your voice, it was very obvious you had been crying. The âsilentâ sniffle you let out probably didnât help either.
âNo thanks, asshole. I donât need your judgment.â You huff and let out a hitch of breath.
âStop being stubborn and start talking. Weâre still cuffed, so when you move, it wakes me up. So start talking.â Every cell in your body told you not to say anything. To not give him ammo for your weaknesses. But the unchecked and unresolved emotions of your late fiancĂŠ, never getting justice, overruled your initial hesitation.
âI justâŚitâs not fair. Why do bad people get to live and walk freely when good people get cut down?â Wiping a tear or two, you look at Kidd from the corner of your eye. âYou pirates do whatever you want without a care for anyone else's life. Taking and taking.â
With an intake of breath, you steel your heart. âTwo years ago, a pirate crew came to our island. Looting any and every store. Me and my fiance were out eating at the place where we had our first date. It was supposed to be a special day.â Kidd stayed silent as you spoke. âA pirate came into the restaurant. Threatening the bartender for all the money. My fiance, theyâŚthey tried to stop him from hurting them. Even offered to give the pirate all the money in their wallet. I begged them to drop it and let it go, but they wouldnât listen.â
âBefore I could plead again, I watched the pirate cut them down before robbing the place regardless and leaving. I ran to them, picking them up just enough to hold them on my lap. I cried and begged the other patrons to help but they stood still. Did nothing and watched as the love of my life died and bleed out in my arms. And the bastard who did it got away with it. Got away before they could face justice for what they did.â You began to weep, actually letting the tears fall rather than hold them back. Heâs already seen you naked so might as well just spew it out.
âSo you became a Marine to hunt them down.â Sniffling, you nod. There was a silence between the two of you before he also spoke.
âWhen I was a bit younger, I had this girl that I really cared about. But she died from some other pirates who ran the island I was on. So I killed them to get revenge for her.â His point of retelling his own heartache.
âIâm sorry Kidd.â There was another silence passing between the two of you.
âItâs fine. It is what it is. Canât change the past.â Even though you hated to admit it, you supposed you were in the same boat as him. And that he was right. You couldnât change the past. But that didnât make it any less difficult to accept.
âSheâs the reason you became a pirate?â
âYeah. At least I think so.â
âYou think so? What does that mean?â
âIâve always wanted to leave that small ass island. There was something more for me out there, and like hell I was gonna stay there and rot away. Her death was the straw that broke the camel's back.â
âI see.â
The tension that usually suffocated the room gone with the small connection between the two of you now made.
~~~
âSo this island is protected by an emperor of the sea? I didnât realize that not all islands had Marine protection." Looking around the island, you didnât truly understand why a pirate would protect an island. Their pirates. They should be committing crimes and being violent. It didnât make sense.
Running a hand over your face, you continue to walk along the brick path. Each store having their own cute quirk that calls to you. Telling you to let your guard down again, like a few days prior, and check out what they have to offer. But you didnât want to look at stuff when you didnât have any money, and you werenât going to steal. So instead, you just try to enjoy the fact you're on the ground and not some wooden ship that tilts with each rough wave.Â
Kidd begins to walk towards a food stall. A look of determination on his face as he pushes everyone out of the way before going to the front. Ready to order. There were complaints and rebuttals, but with one sharp stare, everyone went silent. His eyes were soul-beating before turning around and ordering. You could feel the judgmental stare at you, wondering why you werenât stopping him. Pulling your hat down to hide your face, you look down.
When the food arrives, you wait for Kidd to pay, only for him to just walk away, almost making you drop your food. He sits down on some picnic table and begins eating.
âThat was fucking rude, jackass. Those people have been waiting, and you just cut in front of them.â Frowning, you look at Kidd.
âIâm not waiting a damn hour for some food.â He grumbles, stuffing his face with whatever he ordered.
âYou couldâve bought an apple or at least made a sandwich before we left the ship!â Throwing your free hand in the air in exasperation as you feel your patience growing even thinner.
âI didnât want to.â Kidd snaps, glaring at you.
âYou couldnât have waited at least a bit? Everybody was staring and whispering about me, and why didnât I do anything to stop you?â
âYou're asking a pirate to give a damn about your career as a marine. News flash, I donât.â
âObviously.â Looking away, you put your head in your hand as you try to think of anywhere to be but there. Your lip trembles as you were so angry that it was to the point it felt like you were going to cry. Which only made you more pissed.
Kidd ate his stolen food, not paying attention to his surroundings until he heard a shaky breath. Stopping his hand before he could take another bite, he looked in your direction. To his slight surprise, he sees your cuffed hand clenched in a fist. The way your body trembled, and the sudden sight of a tear, had his eyes widen a bit.
âAre youâŚcrying?â He watches as you quickly wipe away your tears with the hand that was holding your head.
âNo Iâm not.â Despite your words, he can hear you sniffling and your shaky voice as you tried to stop it. The sound of your shuddering breaths made a yucky feeling appear in his chest. Despite trying to ignore it, it only seemed to grow. Dropping his food, he runs a hand through his hair.
âGod damnit.â Kiddâs appetite disappears as he pushes his plate away. âLetâs go. This food is ass.â Enable to look at your face, he gets up and waits for you to follow him.
~~~
As you sit on a chair next to Kidd in his workshop, you watch him work on something that looks like a bracelet. You didnât want to say anything but you couldnât help but watch as he seemed so determined to make it. It was beautiful so far youâll give him that.
Looking over his big arms, you ignore how his eyes turn to look at your own. He smirks before going back to shaping the bracelet. âSee something you like?â Kidd watches as you pull back and look away.
âI donât know what your talking about.â
âSure you donât.â Laughing in that smug way he does, he goes back to the bracelet, shaking his head. Even if heâd never tell you truly, this was being made for you. He tried to ignore the urge that told him to make it but he finally gave in. May it be a sort of peace treaty for the time beingâa bit of camaraderie. Examining from the corner of his eyes, he notices you're usually the (silver/gold) jewelry type. He was happy he picked the right one when he started. Listening to his gut never failed him.
âWho are you making it for?â Turning back, you watch him work on the metal piece once more.
Kidd goes silent as you see his freckled cheeks turn pink. Grumbling, he whispers under his breath something you didnât hear. Leaning closer, you smirk as you ask him to repeat it.
âItâs for you, alright? BUT ONLY because so I can drag your ass back towards me in case you try running when we get uncuffed.â Huffing, he puts down his tools and hands you the bracelet. There were engravings in the metal as you run your fingers over the jewelry.
Feeling your own face heating up, you quickly put on the bracelet. There was a silence as your eye met Kiddâs. âThanks. But this doesnât change anything or mean anything. Iâm still turning you in when we get to the island.â
âYeah, whatever. Iâd like to see you try.â
~~~
Walking side by side, you and Kidd make your way off the boat. Finally, after two weeks of being stuck together, you both would be free. If what Heat had said was true, then there shouldâve been a Marine base on this island, which would allow you to get a key to free yourself. But at the same time, there was still getting Kidd free to let him go to jail, like your original plan. You knew you should turn him in. After all, you had dedicated your life to bringing criminals to justice. So why now are you questioning.Â
Was it because of what happened during those weeks? How you, in a moment of weakness, spilled your soul to a pirate? And he did slightly in return. Even if he was less tearful. Or how, after it, there was a shift in energy between the two of you. Seeing each other in your most vulnerable moments. In the shower, and even having to change in front of each other. Itâs safe to say this was the last time you cuffed yourself to someone.
When walking, you were jerked to a stop, almost falling back. âHey! Why the hell did you stop?â Looking at Kidd, you see him eyeing some store that looked like some sort of hardware store from the outside.
âWeâre going in.â Without hearing your opinion, he began to drag you inside the store.Â
âWait! We need to get these cuffs off! We donât have time to go window shopping!â You try to pull back, hoping to stop him, but it goes unnoticed.Â
âI need things, and I sure as hell ain't gonna get them after getting uncuffed to you. Iâd have Marines on my ass till I get back to the shop. Plus, I need to give my crew time to restock.â
âHmm, so there is a brain up there. Congrats on having your first thought.â Smirking, you look at Kidd, accepting your current fate of being a makeshift cart.
âKeep talking shit and see where that gets you,â Kidd grumbles, but you could see the slightest smirk of his own on his face before it disappears. âNow come on, screws are over here.â
âYeah, whatever you say, bossy.â
You donât know how long you were in the store, but it was long enough that your hands were overflowing with tools or something else. It blocked your view, forcing you to rely on Kidd to guide you through the place.
âAre we done yet?â Groaning, you hurt your arms and felt some pain in your back.
âYes, we're moving towards the register, happy?â
âVery. See? Paying for all this wasnât hard.â
âYeah, yeah, lets go. We gotta find that register.â Trusting him, you allow him to lead you away.
Itâs only when you notice itâs a bit brighter and warmer that you stop. âKiddâŚweâve been walking for five minutes where is the register?âÂ
âDrop the tools and look for yourself.â Frowning and suspicious, you do so. When the tools drop on the ground, a thud echoes in your ears. A wooden thud. Your mouth drops open when you realize you were on the ship. Gasping, you turn to Kidd who looked unaffected.
âYou made me steal?! What is wrong with you?!â
âIâm a pirate. I donât pay for things. Plus, itâs a big cooperation so they donât even need the berriâs.â
Sputtering, your eyes were wide. âIâm-Iâm a law abiding citizen and a marine you ass! I canât be stealing!â Ranting, you go to hit his arm with your free hand. âYou're such a jerk!â
A yelp escapes you when he pulls you close, your face hits his chest. There was a jump in your heartbeat as his warmth envelops you. You feel your face burn as this was the closest you've actually been with him. At least physically wise.
âH-Hey!â Kiddâs hands lay on your lower back as he lifts his handcuffed hand up, making your own ascend. The skin on your hand touches his fluffy coat. It slips through your fingers and admittedly, you find yourself struggling to not run your fingers against it.
âSuck it up. You handcuffed yourself to me, and that makes you a pirate until you get rid of the cuffs.â The tension was thick enough to cut. But instead of the normal hostility, there was one that had you speechless.
âWe're going to the base. Happy?â His amber eyes stared down at you.
âFineâŚletâs go.â Letting go of you, he begins to walk towards the giant building on the edge of the town. The huge symbol stands out amongst the other buildings.Â
Each step towards the base felt harder than the last. It felt like an added weight every time. There was a twitch in your fingers that had you subconsciously reaching out towards Kidd. Even the simple brush of his own fingers made your entire arm and hand stiffen. Your breath hitched when you felt his own finger barely tangle with yours.
Quickly, the two of you move faster towards the building. Kidd grew nervous getting too close to the building, especially since he still had the sea stone cuff on. Once he got it off, heâd feel a bit better, but for now, heâd be more on guard.
âHide in the bushes by the door.â Pointing towards a big enough bush to hide him, Kidd nods before ducking behind it while you knock on the door. It had badge access you didnât have, since you weren't from the island.
There was the sound of footsteps before the door opened; a stern-looking woman appeared before you. Her eyes look you up and down, sizing you up. Instantly, you go into position, made almost impossible with the handcuffs.
âHello commander! I am from the (.....) island. Unfortunately I got caught on a pirate ship. They cuffed me with a sea stoen cuffs they stole. Iâve been unable to free myself, so Iâve come to see if you have a key to free me!â There was a little lie you sprinkled in, but it didnât really matter; all that mattered was getting that key.
âHmm, what's your number, Marine?â
â4701698 Commander!â
The woman turns and calls out to another marine in the base to search your number, wanting to make sure you were real. It took a minute or three before the marine confirmed it. When the news reached the woman, she looked in her pocket. The jingling of keys echo in your head as finally after so long, youâd be free. When you go to grab it, thinking she was handing it to you for you to do it yourself, she slaps your hand away, making you yelp and pull it away, holding your hand to your chest in shock.
âDid I say you could touch my keys?â
âIâm-Iâm sorry Commander. I just thought since you were holding it out-â
âDonât be an idiot. If I said you could touch them then I wouldâve said so. But I didn't, did I? No. Learn your place marine-â
Before the older woman could scold you more, you watch as a fist connects with her. You gasp as the punch sends her stumbling back, dropping the keys. Kidd jumps out from teh bushes, grabbing the keys before pulling you close and running off. It all happened so fast that you didnât get time to fully register teh situation and how it wouldâve looked to someone who didnât really notice teh predicament you were in.
âKidd! You punched her in the face!â
âDonât care.â
âShe was an old woman!â
âThese hands are rated E for every marine.â His response had you speechless as he continued to run through the alleys to hide before unlocking the cuffs.
When he thought no one would see you two, he set you down. Holding out the key to the cuffs, Kidd watches you grab it and quickly unlock yours before going to his. He noticed the second hesitation before you undid his cuff. They clutter to the floor while both of you rubbed your sore wrists.
The silence was intense as you looked at each other. A heavy feeling settles in your chest. After weeks with whatâs supposed to be the most inconvenient time of your life. There was a heavy feeling in the air. Looking into his amber eyes, it almost seems like you couldnât look away. It was a feeling that had your mouth dry.
This was something youâd felt before. Something that you thought youâd never feel again. Whatâs worse is that you couldnât explain why. He was your enemy. So why did this feel so much harder than it should be? Why did it feel like there was a rope around your heart that was tied to the man in front of you?
Maybe cause he knew what it was like to lose someone you care about. The sense of overwhelming loss that's almost crippling.
Despite the silence, that enveloped you two, the beating of both of your hearts was loud. Each in sync.
âThey went that way! Quickly before they escape!â Sounds of other marines running towards the two of you break the silence. It was now or never. Bring him to justice, have him pay for his crimes. Or let him go. Let him keep causing a ruckus?
Balling your hands into fists, the bracelet he gave you cool against your skin, you exhale beginning to push him towards the port. Your hands on his chest as you do your best. âGo. Just go. And donât come back!â Hiting his chest, you hide your face.
Kidd said nothing, only looking to where the marines were approaching. With a huff, he takes a step back before booking it to the port. Not saying goodbye or looking back. He could feel his strength surging back into his bones as well as his devil fruit powers.
Finally after weeks, he felt complete again. Well almost complete. Whether he wanted to admit it or not, there was a voice in the back of his head that told him he was missing something. That he was forgetting something. He knew what his brain was telling him, but he only continued to run. He didnât have the energy or patience to stay back and fight. Not when his body was fighting each step.
The Victoria Punk was in sight as he saw his crew bringing up the last boxes of supplies. âRaise the anchors and get to your stations! We got company!â Kidd yelps as he grows closer. His footsteps echoing against the dock as he could hear the guns shooting at his form, each one missing.
âFucking finally! At least I can do something!â Using his devil fruit powers without stopping, he stops the bullets raining his way. With a flick of his wrist he sends them flying back the way he came. Grunts of pain and falling bodies only put a smirk on his face.
Getting to the edge of the dock, he jumps, grabbing onto the railing of the moving ship. Laughter and praise at his jump and attack ring in his ears. High fiving his crew he almost doesnât notice the figure standing at the edge of the dock.
Almost.
The sight of you standing still at the edge of the dock has his feet subconsciously going to the railing. His eyes never leave your form and yours his. He watches as you hesitantly lift your hand. Waving. Waving him goodbye. His bracelet still on your wrist. He could feel his fingers twitch, power surging through his veins but he stopped. Despite holding back his power, Kidd couldnât help but copy your actions. But it didnât feel like enough. Like there needed to be something more.Â
But there wasnât anything he could do but watch as you slowly grew smaller and smaller. Not moving until you and the island were out of sight and nothing but a speck in the horizon.
