There’s something really cool to me about the line “it is you even to have transformed my art” from Ovid’s Metamorphosis (the prologue section) because the previous two (?) lines were written in the form of an elegiac couplet which is how Ovid wrote all their previous poems (cause they were you know elegies) and it seems to be the same for this line EXCEPT the words “transformed my art” which shifts the structure into a hexameter which was used by Homer (and then Virgil) in the structure of epic poetry, the same structure Ovid then uses for the rest of metamorphosis

There is a lot that can be said about the perceived superiority of different poetic forms as well as Ovid trying to suck up to Augustus (cause they were super sad about exile) at the time of writing but I just think this actual audible shift in poetic form in that specific line is super neat actually

One of my favourite things about learning about Augustus’ rise to power is that he has every possible title and power except Pontifex Maximus (until 12bc) because Lepidus (despite everyone’s best efforts) was still around 😭😭

For like more context cause I feel like yapping about Lepidus

He was one of the members of the 2nd triumvirate and was doing fine until he was accused of conspiring with the enemy and had his legions and provinces removed by Octavian and Mark Antony

Then after a war he was not involved in at all he was still punished for it and no longer a triumvir then was sent away from Rome for 24 years

So he had no legions, land, power and couldn’t return to Rome but he was still the head of religion which is the one thing Augustus really wanted at the time

Augustus could do pretty much anything he wanted but not this because Lepidus just wasn’t dead yet 😭😭😭

Books 6, 9 and 23 of the Iliad feel like filler episodes to me

Like book 6 is like and episode you get of the opponents backstory and motivations (thinking Hector and Andromache)

Book 9 is a beach episode (I will not elaborate)

Book 23 is like a role call type episode, one final image of all the characters before they all die :)
