Many GLITCHAUS innovations, concepts & themes have been used by others. One example is the term Glitch Textiles itself which was subsequently lifted & trademarked following exposure during a 2011 exhibition in Brooklyn, NY. Another example is an early process & theme that inspired the founding of GLITCHAUS all the way back in 2001: John Cage's Prepared Piano & traditional Navajo textile motifs.
Here is a brief history of the origins of GLITCHAUS
GLITCHAUS was conceived in 2001 while studying music composition. Cage's Prepared Piano & Gene Youngblood's Expanded Cinema combined in my Baltimore apartment to create the Prepared NES. From there I naturally applied my process to any video system I could afford to get my hands on.
Having grown up in the US, the output that my Prepared NES generated immediately reminded me of the geometric forms seen in traditional Navajo textile motifs. In 2007 I created the 1st glitch scarf to illustrate this inspiration from disparate sources. In 2011 I wrote about these concepts & techniques that form the foundation of Glitch Textiles for the “Filtering Failure” exhibition.
My work with video game systems familiarized me with ROM hacking software & the classic visualization technique of viewing binaries as color. This process led to the GLITCHAUS DataWeave & DataKnit series & began with an edition of printed apparel launched in 2011.
Those 10 years of research & development, from 2001-2011, created GLITCHAUS & continue to inform everything the studio does & believes in. These concepts/themes/terms/techniques are personal inspirations which continue to prove to be a source for those looking to emulate my original vision for Glitch Textiles. JFD
