Chikuzu Chizuku

Full name: Chikuzu Chizuku

Pronunciation: [Chih-koo-zoo] [Chih-zoo-koo]

Meaning of Name: I heard his given name the dream he came to me in, but I couldn’t remember if it was Chikuzu or Chizuku, so I just decided to make both of them his name.

Hero/Villain Name: Devil☣ist: The Gaseous Hero

Nicknames: Chi-san, a multitude of others

History of Nicknames: Chi-san is what a lot of the UA staff and student body call him as it’s easy to mix up his given and surname. A multitude of cute nicknames have been given to him by his friend Gray.

Aliases: The Gas-masked Assailant (more on this further down)

Uniform: At school he wears a button up shirt, slacks, boots, and a flu mask or his half-face gas mask.

Casual outfit: Usually has a hoodie, jacket/cardigan, or a scarf on along with a flu-mask. Sneakers or boots for his feet.

Preferred outfit: Hoodie, sweat pants, sneakers, half-face gas mask.

Hero costume: Half-face gas mask, green-tinted goggles, two belts with pouches on, mini poncho, long sleeved shirt, gloves, cargo pants, and sturdy boots. It gives off a post-apocalyptic vibe. He usually has his horns a bit longer and his tail a bit shorter when he’s in his hero gear.

 Equipment / Support Items: In the pockets of his belt, he has a few first aid supplies and specialty flu masks (made to give to victims and allies to keep them safe from his quirk). He also has a few other bits and pieces in there that I can’t come up with off the top of my head.

 Characteristics:

Personality: Due to a childhood of bullying, he’s very reserved and anxious. He’s constantly paranoid that people will think he’s a villain based on appearances alone and tends to get skittish around certain types of people/heroes because of it. Despite that, he’s a very friendly person and does his best not to make assumptions based on first impressions. He wants to keep an open mind and even help comfort people who are in situations similar to what his was.

Upbringing: Nothing much to note here.

What did they enjoy most about their childhood?: Not much.

What did they hate most about their childhood?: The constant “teasing” (read: bullying) from his classmates that he looked like a villain and he quirk was a very villain-like quirk to have.

Post-High School:

After he graduated from high school, he didn’t know what to do with himself. He was scared of applying for any sort of normal job in case he was turned away due to his appearance, so he eventually decided to do “underground” jobs. Most of what he did was delivery for questionable people, though a lot of the people he worked for where people who were down on their luck or didn’t want to be out in public for whatever reason (mostly quirk related problems). During this time in his life, he lived in a mostly abandoned building in a hideout he put together himself and wore a full faced gasmask near constantly.

The Gasmasked Assailant:

The area around his hideout was a very bad area with a lot of criminals and villains causing trouble. One night, one of the common local scuffles escalated out of control and Endeavor along with some other heroes ended up being called in. Though he normally watched local conflicts from a balcony near his hideout to make sure it wouldn’t move into his building, Endeavor’s presence drove him to hide inside.

Endeavor suddenly burst through the wall after being attacked and scared the daylights out of Chikuzu. When Endeavor turned around, his freeze instinct turned to fight, and he transformed his tail into the shape of a blade in preparation to defend himself. As he lunged forward and reached for one of the vents on his mask, Deku suddenly grabbed him and carried him out of the building to a safe location. This all happened within the span of about 10 seconds.

After asking why Deku “saved” him, Deku explained that he thought that Chikuzu was just a terrified civilian who was fighting back against one of the villains, and didn’t notice Endeavor through the doorway until after he had entered the room. After hearing Chikuzu explain his side, Deku told him that he would cover for him in the event Endeavor had mistaken him for a villain.

Later that night, Endeavor filed a report on a villain he could only identify as “a Gasmasked Assailant.”

Chikuzu threw out his full faced gasmask and switched over to convenience store flu masks.

A few days later…

Chikuzu happened to run into Deku and went over to thank him. After some conversation and a coffee, then decided to stay in contact via Line message. Deku promised not to out Chikuzu out as the Gasmasked Assailant.

Slip of the Tongue and Employment at UA

After a string of odd events including Deku running into Chikuzu while out and about with All Might and then accidentally spilling some of Chikuzu’s history to All Might, Chikuzu was invited to work at UA as part of the general staff and also train there to become a hero if he desired. Chikuzu hesitantly accepted, but after meeting with Nedzu and explaining his full situation then still being welcomed as a staff member, he accepted whole heartedly. He’s extremely grateful to everyone involved in integrating him into the staff.

He lives on-campus in the staff dorms and works mostly as a go-fer, though will substitute for teachers or do any other errands that might need doing.

Shortly after moving into the staff dorms, Chikuzu ran into a former classmate named Gray Mellion who had become a reporter. The quickly hit it off and starting messaging and hanging out with each other.

Current Dream: to get out of the shadow of his past

Long-term goals for Future: become a support hero, have a stable mental state

Status: Former high school classmates turned close friends

How well they get along: Ever since running into each other recently, they’ve become friends and gotten very close. They often hang out with each other when their schedules line up.

What Gray thinks of him: A person who’s been broken down by their past, but is gradually picking up the pieces and putting them back together kintsukuroi style. He has a strong admiration for Chikuzu for coming out of a very dark mental place with a desire to help people instead of a desire to get even.

What he thinks of Gray: Very reliable best friend; the human equivalent of a blanket cocoon.

What Gray calls him: Chikuzu (his given name), Chi-kun, Chi, Chizu (from his surname), C.C., a variety of other pet names. He switches it up a lot.

What he thinks of Deku: An amazing person who saved him from the biggest mistake of his life (even if Deku didn’t know it at the time). He thinks Deku is going to be an amazing hero, and is already a hero in his eyes.

What Deku thinks of him: Someone who’s been in a very bad place and is trying his best to get somewhere better. Deku likes to check in on him every now and then to make sure he’s doing okay at UA.

Full name: Hiroki Haino

Pronunciation: [Hih-row-kee] [High-no]

Meaning of Name: His given name means “abundant joy/strength”. His last name is a play off the words “I know”. His full name was going to be a pun of the phrase “I know what you’re thinking” in reference to one of the functions of his quirk, but I couldn’t figure out a good way to pull it off.

Hero Name: He doesn’t have one cemented, so he just uses a mix of his names: “Hairoki”

Nicknames: Roki-kun, Hiro-kun, HIROKI-KUN

History of Nicknames:

·         Roki-kun is what Aurora once called him

·         Hiro-kun is what classmates and friends have called him in the past

·         HIROKI-KUN just like that is specifically Asahi calling him out and Hiroki loves it and considers the tone it’s said in to be a nickname all on its own

 Quirk and description:

His quirk is called “Broadcast” as he can broadcast his own thoughts into other people’s minds, though if someone allows him to then he can read their thoughts too. This is along the lines of the other person wanting Hiroki to hear what they’re thinking. He can also pick up traces of people’s strong emotions too.

His quirk is fantastic for communication since it can’t be hacked or heard by anyone he doesn’t want to hear it.

If he overuses his quirk, he can get mentally dizzy and fatigued, and he will start to have trouble stringing his own thoughts together, and eventually start to lose control of his motor functions. The worst he ever go to was passing out because his brain had been overworked to the point of temporarily shutting down. It was a very terrifying time as he lost his memories of what had happened a couple hours prior to blacking out. How he starts to act after quirk overusage is comparable to what happens to Kaminari when he overuses his electricity quirk. (basically, it has a heavy impact on his brain functions)

For most of his life, his parents haven’t shown him much physical affection as his parents believed it was unnecessary, especially for those with a communication quirk of all things. His mother has his broadcasting quirk that she uses for work at a big business and both her and his dad (who is quirkless) are often travelling for work).

In his preteen years, his cousin (from his mother’s side) started living with his family. His cousin is the only one who bothers to talk to him outside of asking about school and other serious/non-social related matters, and is the only one he sees on a semi-regular basis. He and his cousin aren’t close, but his cousin will cover for him since his cousin knows how no-nonsense his parents are.

His cousin feels responsible for Hiroki, but doesn’t go through the effort to act like a surrogate parent.

   Did they like their upbringing:

Not really, no. He wishes that his family had paid more attention to him.

He had plenty of friends in school, though most of his friendships felt artificial and fake.

Hiroki finds the idea hard to believe. He’s starting to get a crush on Asahi regardless, though he doesn’t think it’ll ever be reciprocated.

What Asahi calls him: “HIROKI-KUN!!!!!”

What he callse Asahi: “Asahiko”, a pun off his name and the word “hiko” which means “prince”.

Decided to finally add some color to Chikuzu so I could make him my Discord icon. Was kinda motivated ‘cause @whaticandofornow might be making a server and I wanted my son as my icon if it becomes a reality.

The first is his actual costume as Devilist: The Gaseous Hero, while the second has the lenses removed as a color ref for his eyes. The differing bgs is just so I can quickly tell the files apart lol

Top Left: First ever sketch of Chikuzu. Includes a scrapped nickname and a title that relates to that previously mentioned “horrible and irreversible mistake” he almost made.

Top Right: Chikuzu without a mask on (though he does have a disposable one hanging around his neck); makes his baggy eyes and usually nervous facial expression much easier to see. Makes this expression 95% of the time.

Bottom Left: Stylized name/logo concepting along with some small sketches. Left one was just a quick Chikuzu to get back into the swing of drawing his hair and the right one is him at work at UA.

Finally getting around to uploading stuff for my baby BNHA fan character~ I’m hopefully going to get around to posting a color ref soon.

He’s way less cool than his hero outfit makes him look, I promise you. And on that note, he’s in his hero costume here because I sketched this out before deciding to do the whole profile thing.

Will post more about him later, but for now, I’ll leave you all with some trivia below the cut:

Was bullied throughout most of school for looking “villainous” and having a “villainous” (read: scary) quirk.

Is horribly anxious and terrified of a pro hero mistaking him for a villain (especially heroes like Endeavor).

Was saved from making a horrible and irreversible mistake by a passing Deku (which triggered the series of events that led to his odd employment at UA)

Has become an unofficial counselor for kids that may/do get bullied for their scary looks/personality/quirk etc. because he’s been there before.

Is close friends and former high school classmates with a respected journalist called Gray Mellion (who works for a popular and well known pro hero magazine).

He only has a provisional hero license and is working on getting his full license.

Always wears at least one of those disposable flu masks because he’s worried he’ll “leak” even though he has control over his quirk.

Sometimes releases smoke when he gives a heavy sigh.

Gets nervous around open flames and sparks because his quirk can be flammable. Very flammable.

Despite his aversion and overall fear of Endeavor, he’s on pretty good terms with Shoto Todoroki.

Chizuku feels a strong connection to Shinsou and Bakugou.

In his hero outfit, he usually has his horns longer and tail shorter, but any other time it’ll be the other way around.

Yes, the ☣ is part of his hero name. It’s pronounced “Devilist” but written “Devil☣ist”

Bonus Meta Trivia:

The name “Devil☣ist” comes from “Devilmist”, but I found the “m” made it feel clunky to say, so I replaced the “m” with a “☣” since the bottom half of it kinda looks like an abstract “m”.

His creation came about thanks to a dream I had, which contained his name, quirk, and the previously mentioned incident involving Deku saving him.

I only knew his given name in that dream, but couldn’t remember if it was “Chikuzu” or “Chizuku”, so I gave him both names.
