I just finished the original southern reach trilogy and it really fucks me up how the books are about the futility of language and human understanding and yet the trilogy ends with a short, simple letter that the author wrote knowing will never be delivered. And how each book in the trilogy ends on a scene of one person flailing desperately, unambiguously condemning themselves to be annihilated, all for the purpose of closing the distance between themself and someone they care about. The biologist, Control, and Gloria each give in to an internal drive pushing them towards the people who matter to them, regardless of how it will inevitably destroy them beyond recognition.. human language is futile and maybe human connection is too but at the end it's all we have..
