Mermaids commune under the light of the moon with Amazonian pink river dolphins in Santiago Yahuarcani's untitled painting, made in 2021 using natural and acrylic pigments on llanchama parchment from the bark of a sapucaia tree. The entrancing painting is part of the Indigenous artist and activist's first solo show, on view at the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester, England, through January 4, 2026. A leader in the Aimeni (White Heron) clan of the Uitoto people in Peru, Yahuarcani infuses his work with "the legacy of my ancestors, those who saw the universe not as something to conquer, but to revere."
