Talked about this a bit in the tags of my last post but all the Beta kids are kinda self-centered in their own way. John constantly complains about his Dad when he's the only one in the group with a functional guardian. Dave downplays everyone else's struggles as if Rose's emotional abuse, Jade's isolation, and Johns mental health problems aren't "as bad" as his physical abuse. Rose is sometimes more concerned with throwing out diagnosises and "being right" than actually listening to her friends, family, and partner. Jade can be impatient and insensitive when people try to confide in her.

And I like that! I like that these terminally online kids who grew up without a lot of people around them aren't great at empathizing with others. None of them are perfect friends, it makes them more interesting characters and gives them space to grow as adults, especially as their support systems grow.
