FALLOUT - The Strip

Ok but I LOVE the fact that Ghouls need vials to stay alive in the fallout show because it highlights a very important issue that so many apocalypse shows dont even ATTEMPT to touch on:

How will people who need routine medication to stay healthy make it in the apocalypse?

Because you could make the lazy and frankly ableist answer of "survival of the fittest kills them all off" but let's face it. Regardless of who dies once the apocalypse starts, people are going to continue existing who need routine medication: diabetics, asthmatics, people with autoimmune conditions, etc. These are things that people in an apocalypse setting would NEED to account for and yet it's almost never adressed in apocalypse media.

Enter, the Ghouls. Ghouls need vials (does their medication have a canon name? Idk) to avoid going feral and if they dont get them, they die. We see from the worldbuilding in the show that pharmacies are often raided, trading is common, and, before the NCR was blown up, work was being done politically to get Ghouls rights which would've almost certainly included easier access to that medication.

And I love that the show makes an EFFORT to show that it is a genuine issue that Cooper needs to keep an eye on. He keeps loads of spare vials on him at all times, he panics when he runs out, even when he's busy doing something he'll sometimes need to pause to take his meds or go on a detour to FIND his meds. Not to mention, based on dialogue from s1, it's implied that Ghouls have support networks in place with other Ghouls to give each other spare vials when they're running low. It could so easily just be a random bit of lore they chuck out in one scene to justify the existance of feral Ghouls and why Cooper isn't feral and then never adress it again, but they DON'T, they acknowledge the disability that comes with needing the vials, and they show the different methods that people go about attaining them, and it's one of the many reasons I love the Fallout show as much as I do.
