Fun fact: the reason wearing seatbelts became common in the US was because kids were trained to in school, and would constantly bug their parents to wear their own seatbelts. In my mom’s words, everyone was shamed by little children into behaving safely.
This is how I got my mom to quit smoking,,, by annoying the everloving shit oughta her at age 7
i check the nintendo switch subreddit for news from time to time, and this was one of the trending posts for today. how cute…
this is the most heartwarming shit.

the MEATBALLS menu????? wtaf tumblr
In UI/UX design, menus have different names depending on the aspect they have, I knew about the hamburger menu and so I figured the “meatballs menu” could exist too, and it does…
thats it, im not posting the rest of the day, this is the best fucking thing ive learned in the past 3 weeks
this is what we needed to learn in distance learning

women for at least the last 80 years: don’t call me pet names if you don’t know me, it’s demeaning men: oh all of a SUDDEN you can’t call a waitress “sweetheart” or “dear” what is this NEW feminist bullshit everybody about any guy over 40: oh he’s from a different time, it was normal back then! He doesn’t mean anything by it!
Yo, I lived in Santiago de Cuba for 4 months. I had a Cuban ID card and everything.
Let me tell you a bit about life in Cuba:
Their cars are still running for the most part. They now also have some newer cars manufactured from China.
Kids in rural areas get a great education. By rural areas, I mean “middle of nowhere, dirt roads only horses can get through (no cars)”. They even got cute school uniforms and everything.
Rural areas have food, running water, and electricity. If you’re from any other Third World country, you know how insanely amazing that is.
A friend of mine has a 3-year-old daughter who has a heart valve defect. If he lived outside of Cuba, she’d likely be dead, because he could in no way afford the expensive medical care. Instead, she has free access to some of the best doctors in the world, and the government even pays for her trips to the opposite side of the island to see specialists.
I was asked by the maid who cleaned the house I stayed at why I wore glasses instead of just getting laser eye surgery. I had to explain to her that I couldn’t afford it. “So why don’t you just apply for the government to pay?”
Everyone is guaranteed a minimum food allowance every month.
Everyone is guaranteed free education, including university.
I’ve met a sugarcane plantation worker who could afford to buy a plane ride. Why was he going on a plane ride? To go to his daughter’s graduation from medical school. In contrast, when I was little I was at a party where a little girl saw a plane fly overhead and said: “One day I’m gonna go in one of those” and all the adults burst out laughing because there was no way anyone in her family could ever afford such a thing.
Cuba used to have a less than 40% literacy rate. Within literally 2 years of the revolution, they had a 90% literacy rate. That’s because the government sent out student teachers with schoolbooks and lanterns way out to the boonies to teach people how to read and write. I met one of the women who did this.
University students in Cuba couldn’t comprehend that when we said that other countries let their citizens starve and die of curable illnesses we meant that literally. “Like, they can’t die, they have their food allowance!” “No, there’s no food allowance.” “But what happens if you can’t afford food?” “You die.” “…But– But taking care of people is the government’s job. They can’t just let their citizens die.” “But they do.” “BUT IT’S THE GOVERNMENT.” “I KNOW.”
Is Cuba perfect? Of course not. But it’s sure a lot better than a lot of places. It sure is a lot better than the US.
Don’t go ragging on Cuba without knowing what you’re talking about.
Screaming .. what
This person thinking a $200-300 bag means you’re the 1%
yeah
I'm sitting here boggling at the idea of spending more than $30 on a purse, when i could put that money towards so many other things.
$300 is pricey for a bag, but I’ve spent more than that on video games, so it’s hard for me to be judgey about it. They’re good sized bags, with a simple design that you could wear with a ton of stuff and won’t go out of style quickly. If they’re really good quality, they could outlast a number of my cheapo bags, since I go through a few of those a year (when I left the house). You would definitely have to have the money up front, though. (Hello, Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness.) The designer is Liberian-American, though, so you’d be supporting a Black-owned business.
But I haven’t seen any mention of this brand before, memes or no, so why has this suddenly shown up on Tumblr? Especially since it’s pretty low priced compared to a lot of designer names. Let me google!
Ah. AOC bought a somewhat pricey, but practical, designer name bag, supporting a Black immigrant both directly and by providing publicity for his business. Suddenly, a post appears on Tumblr encouraging socialist and communist-leaning people to hate people carrying this particular designer name bag.
She’s up for reelection in two months.
This is what propaganda looks like.
Not all propaganda is obvious. The issue with social media becoming the hyperpolarized, favor of snappy retorts over discussion, absolute mess that it is means that peoples' inclination to engage with media in the shallowest means makes things like this so easy. It doesn't just look like 'Facebook videos and posts for the olds'. I know for an absolute fact certain people that would repost this unironically without having looked any amount deeper.
Be critical of what you consume.

breaking news: children cry at school, too, every day and we your children’s teachers handle the situation with care and grace and not a single newspaper considers it breaking news.
of course i feel bad for a crying child. i even have some compassion for their mother bc yeah, it really sucks when a child you love is crying. i would know. i’m a teacher; it’s a normal part of the school week. (fyi: it very often has to do w stuff that’s happening at home or stuff that students don’t feel safe enough to talk about at home.) but this headline & image being used so transparently as an argument against distance learning is so upsetting and misleading.
i mean, send the kids back to school. let them infect their parents and grandparents. and then by all means run the news stories about these same children crying at funerals for the preventable deaths of their family members. because that is exactly what reopening schools will do.
(also, maybe im being way out of line here but what kind of parent pauses to take a photo of their child crying? that is fucking gross and there’s no way to get meaningful consent from a kindergartner to agree to that photo being distributed like this.)
Here’s my advice to everyone who thinks that the election will be so fraudulent that it won’t matter, who thinks 45 will not cede power, etc, etc:
Vote so that the history books know it was fraudulent. -
Vote so the contemporary world knows it’s fraudulent. -
Vote so that he is actually committing the crime, and not just attempting it but winding up not needing to. -
Vote not because you like Joe Biden (ew), but because the establishment as it stands will take low votes against 45 as approval. Vote to communicate the crime that is happening in the most severe degree. Vote so that if he pulls some bullshit, it has to be the most obviously illegal bullshit possible.
These are not just talking points. These are steps to make action against a fraudulent government, if it happens, easier. To make it possible. To make the public understand.
I can’t stress enough, the larger the margin between Biden’s votes and Trump’s votes, the less likely Trump will get away with whatever tomfoolery he tries to pull
Why isnt there a clothing brand that caters towards my need to dress like a fantasy novel wanderer. Give me scuffed leather boots and a knapsack and tatty overcoat with mice in the oversized pockets and billowy shirt with poofy sleeves and trailing laces
100% TRUE
Pro tip: If you copy and paste a link that said “no free articles” into a private/incognito browser, it will let you read the whole thing.
also if u press the “esc” (escape) key on ur laptop before the page fully loads, it won’t load any pop-ups blocking u from reading. if the article has images, then this method sometimes does not u see them. but! the words will be fine :)
If the site is particularly badly designed, you might just be able to delete the overlay itself. Right click > Inspect element and delete the line of HTML (it’ll be highlighted automatically)
hey kids there is a website called outline.com that will let you read from pretty much any news site with a paywall for free
outline.com is amazing - it hasn’t failed yet on any site that I’ve tried it on.
There’s a chrome extension and firefox extension.
This is really helpful but will not solve the problem because most people will not use those, that was the critique on the first post, most people will simply take their news from the ones with easier acess, the only thing that would change that would be the ones with paywalls taking them off, and that will never happen
also if anyone wants to get past newspaper paywalls, check your local library’s digital services! many libraries include news subscriptions, some sort of news apps, etc. they may have a way to access articles.
Soft goalies warm my heart ❤️
In case you missed it, Dale Tallon (the Florida Panther’s former GM) is being investigated for racist language he used in the bubble. His interview about it was bullshit for quite a lot of reasons.
A.) He misidentified Matt’s race (He’s Filipino)— and apparently thought he was white? He also apparently never watched one of the most powerful anti-racism speeches given in hockey this season that was a major topic of discussion in his sport? Great excuse.
B.) He seemingly thinks “the word” is only racist language he could’ve used, as if no other possibilities exist.
C.) If you have to say “I don’t remember” instead of “I would never,” that’s a problem you should look into within yourself.
The fact that there’s numerous allegations to look into says enough. Even in the wild case that every allegation is false, this interview about it (which he ended early, by the way) shows that he should never be allowed within 100 yards of a job.
Anyway, support the HDA and check out this list of resources for anti-racism in hockey.
