Summary:

There, on a grassy plain bathed in moonlight, the lion and the wolf collide. Then one day, a conversation about the meaning of the “shitty ring”, as they’ve called it, triggers a challenge: Sanji will show Zoro how lovey-dovey he can be. Zoro is ready to laugh at him. Or is he…?

Like I get it, arrogance and complacency (and lowkey some aging) was what truly did him in but goddamn they could have at least made the fight more harrowing, ig? You mean to tell me he is going to lose track of somebody in a closed off room he knows the layout of after being able to predict where tracer was going to recall in his debut animation??? He could've put up a more believable fight or at the very least make vendetta fight dirty by thowing shit to blind him to make that make more sense.

I was talking about the trailer w/ a buddy of mine and they put forward a theory that maybe their fight infront of the other Talon members over zoom was staged, because neither took the chance to do direct lethal damage to the other and Akande is still obviously alive, especially with the way he was goading Vendetta on about having to take power instead of inheriting it. Like its the final stage of her being his successor or something. I'm kind of skeptical but JPC made it into the game so anything is possible.

Overall I'm still happy the plot is actually moving again after years of bupkis and kiriko skins so I have a reason to actually pay attention again but they did Akande super dirty.

Does Renoir ever speak a word to any of the expeditioners besides Maelle? He obviously demands attention when he appears onscreen but I dont think he ever speaks directly to any of the expeditioners on the beach, either. Everytime they address him, its a one-way conversation. (E:33 spoilers, but vague)

Even during his fight with Gustave as he pleads for Renoir to set Maelle free, he never answers him and only acknowledges him as an obstacle. Like, a father wouldnt consider the feelings of a toy he was taking away from his kid as punishment for misbehavior. Every piece of dialogue is directed at Maelle (and Verso), trying to reinforce that this is all for her own good.

And he doesnt seem to acknowledge anything from Lune and Sciel right before the paintress fight and boy is this some delicious metacharacterization if thats the case. The expeditioners do not matter to him because they are just drawings. His brutality has been in service of severing Maelle's connections to them AND crushing Verso's hope to likely cow him into compliance.

All Verso knows how to do is play dumb, play piano, be suicidal and lie. (spoilers)

Ever since Sciel found out about his Esquie wine stash, it came to my attention that Verso constantly lies by omission and when other people find out he sorta slips around it to act like he wasnt keeping it a secret on purpose but now that everyone is in on it, its fine.

Just got through the Renoir fight and there were like 3 conversations happening as The Curator came in and this motherfucker had the nerve to look Sciel in the eye and go lmao girl idk. Like?????? Brotherman you've been speaking in vagueries this entire time and Renoir is talking directly to you like the rest of expedition isnt there! I want to just

I'm like 90% sure there's some meta narrative here where everyone who isnt directly related to Verso is some kind of Tulpa-esque being made/painted by either their family or the Paintress eho is part of the family. I've been lucky enough to not get spoiled but the front and center focus on emotions, the mind, and arts as a method of giving mental constructs form, all point in that direction. Also everything is named after painting techniques/tools so I mean

Yeah, no I get it. Knowing your existence is simultaneously painful for everyone around you AND you are a shadow of someone else with a face and memories that are both yours and not fucking sucks dude. Every memory that uniquely belongs to you is make-believe playing with the deceased's toys and every memory that isn't, carries the pain of knowing that it was of what could arguably be considered a better version of you.

He did not choose to exist as this effigy and the Paintress (es?) keep him alive to suffer the agony of carrying the love for the him that isn't really him. He's denied closure, autonomy, and true growth. Kept in some sort-of-alive state to tear up any granulation tissue that proper grieving for the him that isn't him would have facilitated between the Dessandre family.

AND ALSO, RENOIR IS COMPLETELY JUSTIFIED. BOTH OF THEM. Holy fuck. Like, I didn't think I would ever empathize with this raggedy old bitch that offed the big homie Gustave and now here I am, heartbroken that this man has to watch the woman he loves lose her boy over and over again and lose herself in trying to drown herself in memories of him. And his daughter seems to be trying to follow suit. Doing the healthy thing for everyone requires him to kill the final part of his son knowing his wife will probably never forgive him for as long as they live.

Brother the game isn't even done yet, and I have outright cried like 3 times and teared up twice playing this stupid thing orz
