Pope Francis denounces transgender people as 'annihilation of man,' says it's 'terrible' that kids are taught to choose their gender

The pope blamed what he called “ideological colonizing” backed by “very influential countries”, which he did not identify.

Hey, remember that time Pope Francis compared trans people to nuclear weapons? His transphobia is showing again. 

In a meeting last week, the pope said that it’s “terrible” that children are taught to “choose” their gender, and that transgender people represent the “annihilation of man.” There’s this excerpt:

The pope said he wanted to conclude his remarks by reflecting on this: “We are living a moment of annihilation of man as image of God.” He added that his predecessor, Benedict XVI, had labelled current times “the epoch of sin against God the Creator”.

He said: “Today, in schools they are teaching this to children – to children! – that everyone can choose their gender.” Without specifying, he blamed this on textbooks supplied by “persons and institutions who donate money”. The pope blamed what he called “ideological colonizing” backed by “very influential countries”, which he did not identify. One such “colonization”, he said – “I’ll say it clearly with its first and last name – is gender.”

“Today, children are taught this at school: that everyone can choose their own sex,” Francis said last week, according to the Catholic Herald and other news organizations that read a Vatican transcript of the closed-door meeting. “God created man and woman; God created the world like this and we are doing the exact opposite.”

Teaching children that they can pick their gender, Francis said, is “terrible.”

Saying it again: Maybe he’s said some more progressive things than other popes, but that doesn’t make Pope Francis an ally.

I maintain that it is extremely and deliberately threatening to transgender people in Catholic countries in the global south for the Pope to be associating “transgender” with “colonialism.” There are already more trans women getting murdered in Brazil than in any of the country and the pope is intentionally pouring gasoline on this situation. He’s from Latin America, he knows what he’s doing. The man is an overstuffed bag of turds with a mitre on.

Bolded for emphasis. Let’s not forget, this is the church that has quietly moved child molesters around for literally decades instead of actually preventing them from harming children. Can we stop fucking pretending this guy is good just because he’s slightly less awful than all the other popes?

I know a lot of people aren’t inclined to come to this from a theological angle, and that’s legit... but if you are a person of faith, I think it’s important to acknowledge that what he said isn’t “annihilation of man” but “annihilation of man as image of God.”

This is important. This isn’t a claim about the impact on society, this is a claim that people being trans is a direct threat to humanity’s connection to the divine. One of the most basic claims about human nature that the Christian creation myth makes is that we were created “in the image” of God - that before anything else, and through everything else, humanity is inherently a reflection of divinity. The Pope is saying that trans people do not embody that reflection of divine nature, and that we’re furthermore a threat to other people’s connection to the divine.

And that deeply troubles me.

Summary

I want to create a deck which speaks deeply to the world as it is right now, and as it has been since I was 12 years old. This would be a deck about extremes, inversions, opposites, contrasts, changes, reflections. Its a tool not just in the sense that all decks are tools, but a tool for navigating the particularly strange mental environment we are now in. It attempts to look the ugliness of late capitalist dystopia straight in the face and paint a complete, unflinching picture of exactly what it is, where it comes from, and what it could be.

Did you know you can regrow celery from the base? Well you can! Cut off the stalks you wish to eat but leave the bases connected. Soak the based in water overnight. Plant it in soil (covering at least an inch but leaving some of the stock above the soil. Wait for tiny celery leaves and eventually full stalks.

Celery can be used for more than just ants on a log and soup. It has some magical correspondences too: mental powers, psychic powers, lust, fertility, and male potency.

There really isn’t any sign that magic itself in the Potterverse is religiously or divinely empowered, but it may have been used in a religious context at some point? Some of the very Old Magic-attuned places strike me as likely to have been used religiously at some point in history - if the Sea Cave is something that Voldemort perverted rather than created, it screams mystery cult to me, and I suspect that the reason that the Ministry of Magic is based in London is that the Chamber of the Veil can’t be moved and they built the rest of the Ministry over it.

Overall, the modern British Wizarding world seems to pretty closely mirror their muggle neighbors in being a primarily secular culture that retains a lot of Christian cultural trappings but doesn’t put a high value on actual religious belief or practice? Hogwarts observes Christmas and Easter holidays, but there’s never any mention of the castle having a chapel or of Christian services being offered. In Godric’s Hollow, the Potters are buried in the churchyard rather than in a secular or exclusively wizarding burial ground.

There’s some evidence that when Britain was a more religious country, the British Wizarding community was also more devout than they are currently. There have canonically been Wizards in the clergy, although it’s not entirely clear when or whether their superiors realized they were magical; the Hufflepuff Ghost is, after all, the Fat Friar; he was likely Franciscan. The magical hospital is named after a saint (and Mungo is an actual Catholic saint, incidentally; one who is connected in legend to a holy madman sometimes equated with Merlin). And honestly, while, again, there’s no mention of a chapel at Hogwarts, I’d be very surprised if there’s never been one. It’s a castle erected in the 11th century and in constant occupation and use since; it ought to have a chapel. If it had one at one point and it got “lost” through disuse and magically-assisted expansion of the castle, I’d be willing to put money on it still being there somewhere, and what’s more, on it being situated over a crypt that holds one or more of the Founders.

As for Harry himself... again, my money is probably on agnostic or atheist. He may or may not have attended Christian church services occasionally as a child; the Dursleys don’t strike me as particularly devout but they may have attended on Christmas and Easter to Keep Up Appearances, in which case I’d put about equal odds on them either dragging Harry along or leaving him behind so as not to be seen with him more than necessary.
