As a society, we need to go back to understanding that strangers on the internet are, you know, strangers. I feel lately that I'm seeing a rise in 'An author I love blocked me because they took my comment the wrong way' posts on the ao3 subreddit, and then the comment is them calling the author a fucking bitch or something like that.

Don't do this. Tone doesn't translate well in text, and if you don't have a rapport with that author, they are not going to interpret, 'You're a fucking bitch' as, 'Author I hate you for being so talented and making me feel so keenly.' They're going to interpret it as you being an asshole. You can shit talk with your friends because you have an established relationship with them and can distinguish between playful banter and genuine anger. You do not have this with a stranger, no matter how much you like their fics. You will have a much more pleasant time in fandom and not get cockblocked from interacting with your favorite writers if you remember this.

Scylla is a terrifying sea monster from Greek mythology, famously encountered by Odysseus in Homer's Odyssey. Living in a cliffside cavern opposite the deadly whirlpool Charybdis, Scylla was once a beautiful nymph transformed by a jealous curse into a grotesque creature with twelve deformed feet and six long, snaking necks, each topped with a horrific head boasting triple rows of sharp teeth. As ships passed through the narrow strait, she would lean out of her cave to snatch and devour sailors directly from the decks. Forced to choose between risking his entire ship to Charybdis or losing a few men to Scylla, Odysseus chose the latter, helplessly watching as the monster struck like a predator and devoured six of his finest companions.

I think ao3 is literally the only site where no censorship means no censorship. you can post the most vile things on there — things that will get taken down on any other platforms — and ao3 will protect you, your works, and your rights to create whatever you want, however you want.

and no, this isn’t me saying “write that messed up, disgusting thing” because while, yes, write it if it’s what you want (I myself enjoy writing dark fics, something I believe would be considered “vile” to a lot of people), this is me saying in a world of censorship and capitalism, ao3 really is a treasure.
