…Could u stop acting like a child, Cage?
While watching a DVD from the library my TV popped up a message saying to press a button if I wanted to watch this from additional providers.
It's never done that before so I looked it up and turns out Roku TVs have added all sorts of creepy things in the privacy section since I last checked.
One of which being they take screenshots from what you're watching and send them to third parties to identify it.
Fucking hell! Remember when every fucking device in your life wasn't a spy implanted in your home and working against your interests to try and sell your data? Remember how nice that was??
Remember when the TV was just a tool that would play the things you plugged into it?
Why must the future suck SO much?
TVs collect a huge amount of data. Here's how to use privacy settings to limit the surveillance on TVs from LG, Samsung, TCL, and every othe
A good rundown on what each brand of TV is up to and which settings you should turn off.
The Library Is a Magical Place and You Should Fucking Go There
Every library I've ever been to also has free wifi that won't track you like the corporate wifi spots at restaurants do
My local library has an online movie and audiobook catalogue that you can access from home with your membership! And it’s free!!!
As a librarian I literally could not endorse this message more. There is nothing more punk than your public library and they are very very important. There is so much more than books. Many libraries even have physical items like tools and necessities you can check out, as well as museum passes and the like.
Murderhelion means so much to me actually. They have a relationship and it's definitely queer but it's not the human definition of romantic or sexual. They are both aroace. They share intimacy through the feed and it feels so natural its basically subconscious. The first thing Perihelion does upon meeting Murderbot is expose its entire code to it, just for an unfathomably tiny amount of time. Murderbot meets Peri and trusts it enough to modify its entire body relatively soon after. Peri sees MB having an Awful time and puts on a show for it without even asking. MB gets captured and Perihelion Immediately trains all of its missiles on the colony it was captured by without hesitation and it takes an entire TEAM of people to talk it down from blowing everything up. Peri will casually jump into MB's mind. It got captured and tortured and its memory gets fucked with and it was shut down and it used every single inch of processing power it had to find Murderbot because it knew it could save it. The two of them have no human label for their relationship but they trust each other so easily that they can become essentially one being when they have to. whatever they have going on is FANTASTIC
Friendly reminder that if you talk about how representation is important and how there's not enough diverse media, I implore you to seek out the media that already exists. And if you live in an area with a public library, go to see if they're available at your public library. And then go check them out.
As a librarian, it is demoralizing to see how low the circulation statistics are on lgbt+ books and books by BIPOC authors. I include them in displays and readers advisory, but people still don't check them out as much. Libraries only have a finite amount of resources, including space. We don't get a book then keep it forever. If not enough people check it out, we have to get rid of it to make room for more books. And when James Patterson Book #69 gets checked out 30 times in one year and cool, subversive Sci fi novel with a Black trans woman main character has never been checked out once, the librarian (me) has to make a hard decision.
If you're looking for something tangible and easy to do this pride month, look for lgbt+ books (there are millions of lists online that you can find. It's easier than it's ever been to find diverse books) and check them out from your library.
No time to read? Look for a short story or poetry anthology and just read as much as you have time for. Or just check out a book cus it looks interesting and read as much as you can. We have movies too.
As cool as it would be for me to just keep the books I want and get rid of the ones I don't, I have to listen to the community on matters of collection development. And the community tells me what books they want by checking them out and leaving the ones they don't want on the shelf.
If you think this doesn't apply to you because you live in a progressive area and obviously the books are being checked out, you're wrong. I once worked in a community with a large lgbt population. Those books were not getting checked out. If you want to tell me you live in a conservative area and your library doesn't have any diverse books, you are legally obligated to check the catalog before replying to this post. I currently work in a conservative community and we have lgbt+ and bipoc books. And if you still cannot find any, you are legally obligated to see if your library has a collection request form that patrons can fill out before replying to this post.
Thinking about how The Murderbot Diaries is a character that is completly and fully character driven to the point where the very writing and book format is revolved around it.
The first book is short, concise. It skips a bunch of scenes over the course of many weeks. It focuses purely on what Murderbot thinks is important and worth focusing on. Thats why the majority of the book is dedicated to its thought process, its complaints, or it's fear. It skips over "meaningful" scenes because it doesn't find them important. Like most of the conversations, like it helping Volescu. It doesn't care. It does care when it feels uncomfortable and wants to be left alone. It does care when its scared and something big might happen. It does care about Mensah which is why the few scenes that are more meaningful are with Mensah and then back to narration.
The books get longer and longer as they go on, showing how as Murderbots journey continues so does its ability to care. More intimate moments, more admitting to us that it's afraid, it doesn't want this, it does want this. It begins to describe and pay attention more and more to whats going on around it and it grows to decide what it wants and it's all so beautifully conveyed through writing.
Even The Company was such a clever and subtle way of telling us something. Because everything in the books centers on how Murderbot thinks. Murderbot would never aknowledge its feelings towards The Company and therefore we never knew of it until someone pointed it out. And that too is development because now Murderbot cares enough to let us know. To let itself know. It still shuts down, draws away in its own thoughts. But each book gets longer and longer with less time between them because Murderbot is slowly learning to pay attention, and interact, and aknowledge the present moment. Its learning to care
"average SecUnit watches 462 hours of media a year" factoid actualy just statistical error. average SecUnit watches 0 hours of media per year. Murderbot, who hacked its governor module & consumes over 21 hours of media each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted
Ok, concept, after System Collapse those two random SecUnits Murderbot gave the hacking directions to decide to go absolutely nuts with sharing it around and it goes,,, kind of viral. Resulting in a community of new FreeUnits who,,, obviously need ways to share info and help each other out
The result is FeedFreeUnit, a hyper-encrypted feed that eventually spreads to, like, every port. It starts out as just tips and helpful code and instructions on how to get to Preservation and stuff, but eventually it also turns into THE social media for FreeUnits, basically
Which means memes. And they're kind of wild. (Sorry, I got the idea for ONE of these and it turned into a whole bunch)
(Yes, FeedFreeUnit calls Murderbot "MB". Yes, Murderbot HATES this. Yes, it causes the first known instance of construct Discourse.)
when ART finds this I swear it's gonna start a whole-ass FreeSecUnit colony
and the underground spaceroad to match
what a way to bleed out the Corporation Rim
Idk what to say
[ID: a digital half-body drawing of Murderbot from the Murderbot Diaries. It's wearing a shirt with three batteries on it which are colored in the aromantic, asexual and agender pride flags. The words "Yea, I run on AAA's" are written above the batteries. In the top left corner is a little sketch of Murderbot holding up the shirt to look at it with three dots next to its face. Next to Murderbot's face is an annoyed little emoji to show its expression underneath the helmet. End ID]
weird how no one ever comments on the absence of smells unprompted. the nose just isn't a topic of conversation unless it's urgent huh
"it's dark in here" normal regular observation
"finally some quiet" relatable exclamation
"doesn't smell like anything in here" absolutely deranged sentence
...unless you're Murderbot
narrator who's terrible at social cues & describes every facial expression as "unreadable"

Hey guys! Let's put my art to good use!
Dr. Mohammed Al-Deeb ( @mohammedaldeeb ) reached out to me on my personal blog looking for help spreading awareness and getting donations for his fundraiser to get himself and his family out of Gaza & support themselves in Egypt once they get there. He is #212 on nabulsi and el-shab-hussein's Vetted Evacuation Fundraiser spreadsheet.
I'm doing drawing requests for anyone who donates at least €5 to his GFM and sends me a screenshot of their receipt. They can be sent to me here or @petitelappin. You can request a guy from your shows, your OC, your cousin Kyle, and I'll make a little drawing for you.
Match my own donation of €20 and I'll add color!
Let's see how much we can raise!
