Prometheus Bound
Peter Paul Rubens
1611-1618
In Greek mythology, Prometheus (meaning “forethought”) is a Titan, a trickster figure known for his intelligence and as a champion of mankind. Credited with the creation of man from clay, he defies the gods by stealing fire and giving it to humanity, an act that enabled progress and civilization.
The punishment of Prometheus as a consequence of the theft is a major theme of his mythology, and is a popular subject of both ancient and modern art. Zeus, king of the Olympian gods, sentenced the Titan to eternal torment for his transgression. The immortal Prometheus was bound to a rock, where each day an eagle, the emblem of Zeus, was sent to feed on his liver, which would then grow back overnight to be eaten again the next day. (In ancient Greece, the liver was often thought to be the seat of human emotions).
The trick at Mecone or Mekone was an event in Greek mythology in which Prometheus tricked Zeus for mankind’s benefit, and thus incurred his wrath. He placed two sacrificial offerings before the Olympian: a selection of beef hidden inside an ox’s stomach (nourishment hidden inside a displeasing exterior), and the bull’s bones wrapped completely in “glistening fat” (something inedible hidden inside a pleasing exterior). Zeus chose the latter, setting a precedent for future sacrifices. Henceforth, humans would keep that meat for themselves and burn the bones wrapped in fat as an offering to the gods.
In Western culture, Prometheus is a symbol of rebellion against authorities and impositions, and a metaphor of thought.

For some aspects, the figure of Prometheus reminds me the norse god Loki, for certain traits as intelligence, a sort of mischievous nature, and for being a trickster; he besides is remembered for the gift of fire to mankind, likewise Loki, who is a primordial god of fire. They are also punished in very similar way, for Loki too was bounded to a rock and eternally tortured by the venom dripping from a serpent.
