I actually recommend everyone write for a rarepair once because it completely changes your relationship with fandom. Engagement stops being numbers and starts being names. You know who's going to show up. You recognize usernames. Someone disappears for a while and then comes back and you're like “OH MY GOD WELCOME HOME.” It's incredibly wholesome. It is also deeply inconvenient when all six of you simultaneously get writer's block-

I really think that the best way to learn to recognize AI writing is to read as much non-AI writing as possible, and yes, that means you need to read real books written by a variety of authors and edited by professionals. AI can write somewhat convincing middling prose for fic because it was TRAINED on a lot of fanfiction. But it writes aimlessly, filling the page with words without any sense of WHY that even the most elementary fic author inherently understands because it's the thing that's driven them to tell their story in the first place.

The literacy crisis is in the room with us right now, and you can fight back by reading something that a real human wrote.
