For the 3 Sentence Ficathon prompt: Narnia, Susan, I’m not your problem anymore/so who am I offending now?/you were my crown, now I’m in exile seeing you out
“You smoke like a kid,” she tells him waspishly, as her own long ribbon of blue smoke unspools elegantly upwards into a cloud-choked autumn dusk. Peter smiles, the roll of his broad shoulders oddly boyish, swallowing a cough; she wishes he had stayed in the house, she wishes he would come out to the Tottenham Court nightclubs with her and blur himself. When Jack and Maggie round the corner and call to her, she shoves her sensible, Mother-approved shoes into his hands, leaves a waxy lipstick smear on his cheek and marches away down the road on heels like castle towers.

The Rec That Was Promised: Jaime x Brienne Fic Rec
I’ve been meaning to put this rec together for a LONG TIME but as always, time got away from me! I fell in love with this pairing before I even was a fan of the show OR the books–the concept of their dynamic intrigued me so much, the double-reverse Beauty and the Beast, the unexpected commonalities, the bonding through my favorite trope: the odd-couple-road-trip. Then I started watching the show and comparing it to book canon, and before I knew it, they had reached an OTP status in my heart on the same level as my other long-term faves (Zutara, Eowyn/Faramir, Captain Swan, Luke/Mara Jade, Royai).
To ship Jaime and Brienne is to be committed to the SLOW BURN, and thankfully we have amazing writers in our fandom that pull us through, whatever ending these two have in canon. This is my love letter to the JB fandom as the show draws to a close, and to the writers who have explored and loved on these characters and enriched them for us. I’ll keep updating this as more fics come in!
Here’s some of my collection:
**= personal faves
Authors
janie_tangerine: I love the variety, the humor, and the poignant humanity of their stories. One of the most prolific writers for J/B. Faves include (and this was like picking a favorite child):
this is the power of love revealed (T)
bathe me up in light, call me when you drown (M)
winterlude (T)
and I’m never going to care about my bad reputation (M)
**scars like the number of stars (M)
ink on a pin, underneath the skin (T)
love has to be remade all the time, made new (T)
two cats are better than one (T) - It has CATS
**cat’s cradle (T) - You can tell I love cats
**and give all the love that you have in your soul (E): A beautifully written long-fic with an ending so perfect and earned and I love it (don’t forget to read the deleted scenes too!)
**more like the man you were meant to be: in which Robert, instead of keeping Jaime in King’s Landing after the rebellion, sends him to Winterfell.Or, alternatively: in which Jaime gets to keep his oaths, gains both Ned’s and Cat’s respect and Jon Snow finds himself growing up with his own sworn sword.Or, even more alternatively: in which Brienne’s father sends her to be a warden at Winterfell after she defies her last suitor and some things change and others stay the same. (T) - One of my absolute favorite JB stories, favorite take on Jamie-at-Winterfell, and favorite Jamie-as-awesome-surrogate-dad story
I’ll be the frosting to your cupcake, wench (E)
**where you invest your love you invest your life: In the dungeons of the Dragon Queen, Jaime saves his skin by telling her stories of his lady love. (T) - Just the idea of it is so romantic and haunting
searching for a heart of gold: where Jaime comes to the conclusion that no one in Westeros deserves knighthood more than Brienne and finds out what he really wants in the process. (M)
QuizzicalQuinnia: Their stories are hilarious, poignant, sometimes bizarre but refreshingly original
**O-T-P: A Saga of Epic True Love and Stuff saga: These stories are freakin’ HILARIOUS chronicles of Myrcella and her friends well-intentioned and completely dysfunctional plans to get Hot Uncle Jaime and Awesome Brienne together. I’m still mindblown by how the author comes up with the most bizarre scenarios and weaves so much believable human drama and emotion into them (M)
Madonna of the Balcony: Jaime Lannister hides away at an isolated Sothoryos resort, mired in the loss of his identity as a sculptor after a devastating injury. Fate is cruel and allows his muse to be found only after he can no longer capture her form, but perhaps she’s there for another purpose entirely. (M)
Rellie: Their stories often break my heart, but they write Jaime and Brienne so poignantly that it’s a good kind of hurt
**The Covering Sky: AU, from the end of 3x07 in which the timeline is changed slightly and Brienne ends up as the reluctant guest of the Lannisters in King’s Landing. - Wonderful characterization and I love the exploration of J/B navigating King’s Landing and finding a way out
Everything Broken (G)
As Loud as Lions: Cersei will not stand for having what is hers stolen. (T)
astolat: Characters are vividly realized and the voices are both humorous and poignant
**Traveling Far: Three weeks into their delightful slog across Westeros, during yet another charming day of shitting in the woods, eating half-raw squirrel, and trudging his feet bloody, the single most dour and uninteresting woman Jaime had ever met in all of Westeros stopped in the middle of a field, drew a deep breath, and said… (E) - This story probably has the most unexpected and delightful ending of the fics I’ve read and one of the few I’d LOVE to see continued as a miniseries
**Laying Siege: “Marry me instead,” Jaime said. (E) - I’ve read this story so many times and never get tired of the wry humor and sweetness of it. Jaime’s voice is just so spot-on and clever.
The Red Fork: "It’s a choice every time,“ she said. (E)
dreadwulf: I adore this writer’s exploration and expansion of canon, their introspective and honest characterization, and the organic, effortless quality of their storytelling.
**A Man for All Seasons : Jaime Lannister is riding North to join the fight against the Night’s King. At last he is free of his family, doing the right thing, and becoming the hero he was meant to be. Unfortunately, nothing is going according to plan.(M, WIP) - The BEST Jaime characterization I’ve read so far. It packs a powerful emotional punch and builds a compelling Season 8 alternative and love story for Jaime and Brienne. I literally would marry this fic if I could…
Terrible Love: Brienne seeks out Jaime in the Lannister encampment to conclude her quest and return his sword. This time, her doesn’t want to let her go. But is Brienne ready to stay? (T, WIP)
ssstrychnine: Adept at capturing the push-and-pull of Jaime and Brienne, their camaraderie and the kindredness that draws them together in so many different scenarios
lavender: jaime helps brienne with her armour. brienne takes a bath. they share a bed. (T)
The Lion Prince: Brienne comes across a lion who wasn’t always a lion. (T)
Wouldn’t You Prefer A Maiden Fair?: That was what men wanted, wasn’t it? Soft helpless women that they needed to protect? (G)
**It’s Like Weather: Modern day Medieval Times style restaurant AU.(M) - You would think this premise would be cheesy, but it’s really not. It’s completely believable and you end up rooting for these characters so much
Miss_M: Writes evocative pieces grounded in realism and a keen understanding of how Jaime and Brienne work as a partnership
On the Night’s Watch: Detective Brienne Tarth transfers to the King’s Landing Police Department and is assigned to permanent nightshift duty: the Night’s Watch, where careers go to die. As if that weren’t bad enough, her new partner is the infamous Jaime Lannister. When they land a time-sensitive missing person case, trusting each other is the only way they might solve the mystery. (M)
**Where the Wind Takes Us: A year after the events of A Dance with Dragons, Jaime and Brienne arrive in the Free Cities to look for Arya Stark.A storm blows their ship all the way to Volantis, forcing our intrepid knights to go about their quest the long way around. (T) - I love the comfortable intimacy and the world-building in this one, plus it’s one of the few that send J/B to Essos
A Song of Thunder and Comfort: In which Jaime discovers Brienne is afraid of thunder and reacts accordingly. (T)
The Twenty Deaths of Brienne of Tarth: What could have been, what may yet be. (T)
Love is Not Love: Brienne never expected to be a mother. (G)
RoseHeart: Their pieces always manage to feel like a breath of fresh air and craft such compelling character interactions
**I Will Not Close My Eyes: What could happen much later than the events from ADWD… (M) - A painful premise, but where it goes from there is worth it
Nothing That Is So, Is So: Brienne must go to King’s Landing, pretending to be her brother and grow up living a lie, waiting for the day she is sent back home, away from being a knight and away from the man she meets there. This is a Twelfth Night inspired story. (T)
**The Alcove: Jaime and Brienne have survived war and winter. But now they must try to find their new lives amidst something they have never truly experienced before: peace. - There’s a simplicity and serenity to this piece that I love as an ending for these two
**The Seven Bind Their Fate: What if Jaime became a prisoner of Renly Baratheon, instead of Robb Stark, and he met Brienne earlier? This story delves into the changing nature of Jaime and Brienne’s relationship in a time of war and shifting alliances and then explores how their journey, and the land, is changed by this small twist of fate. (M) - This is a sprawling epic of a story that I was totally enthralled with
One-Shots
**hold my hand as I’m lowered by dollsome: In which Jaime Lannister never shuts up, and Brienne of Tarth discovers that perhaps she does not want his silence. (T) - It’s the last line that gets me every time
Kismet with a Side of Fries by francoeurs: “You’re the last person I expected to see in here,” a very familiar voice interrupted her pity party. “Bad night?”Oh, no. Brienne looked up and froze with her burger halfway to her open mouth. A glob of sauce landed on her tray with an annoyingly loud plop.Jaime Lannister — her co-worker, friend, and possibly the love of her life — was standing next to her table, holding his own loaded tray and looking almost as surprised as she felt. (T)
Thaw by francoeurs: He didn’t miss the way Brienne leaned into his touch immediately, even as her eyes widened in surprise. He didn’t miss the way they fluttered shut, her near-white lashes fanning over her flushed cheeks. When he removed his hand, he didn’t miss the quick flash of distress on her face before she remembered to hide it behind a mask of indifference.Jaime didn’t miss any of it. (M)
Rescued Again by kirazi: Jaime and Brienne, still fighting their way side by side through the aftermath, in the twenty-four hours after the Battle of Winterfell (T)

On the Shadow by lodessa: Asshai is the end of the world (T)
Smiles Await You When You Rise by goldenslumber: The first time Jaime hears Brienne sing. (T)
Season 6, Episode - 10 After the Siege by Nurdles: In anticipation of episode ten of season six of Game of Thrones, this is a continuation of Jaime and Brienne’s story from episode eight.
**Blizzards Makes Strange Bedfellows by CommaSplice: After his impractical sports car fails him, Jaime Lannister catches a ride to his hotel with Brienne Tarth. Before long, they are caught in a brutal blizzard that causes them to take shelter with an unlikely host. (G) - Because this one has a creepy Roose Bolton and made me laugh
Honourable Intentions by Eloisa: Most men engaged in fighting a duel for a woman’s affections would not find themselves fighting the woman. (E)
**The Only Prayer by sea_spirit: Brienne stumbles upon a sept on her journey back to Winterfell. As she ponders and prays within its walls, Brienne has no idea that someone unexpected is on his way to find her. (T) - Sweet oneshot

When his luck finally runs out, Brienne Tarth becomes his unlikely savior. A slow-burn romance set against a backdrop of dangerous sports and pop culture geekery in a Westeros-flavored United States. (M) - Because I never thought I would read a bull-riding fic yet here we are
Sparring in the Vale by Lady_in_Red: Brienne and Jaime face their feelings for each other as the search for Sansa Stark comes to an end. (M, part of a series)
Unsure and Certain by Angelic_Temptress: As Jon and Daenerys settle into their roles as monarchs in the North and South, it is their advisors who make the move to treat. (M, multiship)
**Before Your Judgment by lionoftarth: Directly after ADWD. Mostly j/b and canon compliant, except if I forgot things. Brienne and Jaime point of view. (M) - Rich characterization and a believable continuation of ADWD

Every single fic update there is an author trying frantically to find the right balance between a nonchalant aside of "leave a comment if you enjoyed =)" and clinging desperately to the coat tails of a random stranger, dragging along behind them on the street wailing "Please, please! I have to know what you thought! I'm desperate to talk to people about this! Ask me about the alliterative repetition! Ask me about the symbolism!"

I can do it. I can write a chapter. I am capable of putting sentences together. I know what a comma is. I am Aware of the Character.
This seems to have vibed with a lot of folks, so as encouragement: after posting this, I did in fact write a whole chapter. So you can do it too! You ARE capable of putting sentences together!
romance is lame and overrated i love mentor/mentee relationships in fiction and especially when theyre sort of fucked up
greatest hits:
- You started out as a bet/challenge to see if I could successfully wrangle the infamous Problem Child but oh whoops I got attached!
- You are my kind, bright-eyed protegé who would never do so much as rip a tag off a mattress. anyway I am going to acquaint you with Criminal Activity
- I showed you genuine kindness and it was maybe the first time you’d ever experienced it and accidentally ended up becoming more of a parent to you than your “real” blood family ever was. Uh. Do you want to play catch in the park or
- I will gladly take any punishment meant for you. I would go to the ends of the earth to protect you, even if it meant I had to die in the process. I would do it a thousand times over, and I wouldn’t regret any of it.
- I taught you how to fight, and now through some circumstance or another, I’m forced to engage you in life-or-death combat without holding back.
- I put you through training from hell to make you the person you are today, for “your own good”, and now you’ve realized that you can hit back. And you can hit hard.
- I have made you into something greater than yourself - but you are changing from how I have designed you, and this is something I cannot allow.
- I taught you everything you know, and it was the greatest mistake I’ve ever made.
- I will make you just like me - by force, if necessary.
stop taggin this with ships / “and then they kiss” / “but what if it WAS romantic” you are missing the whole point of this post so bad. this is a Certified Aro Post. get weird about platonic dynamics NOW
Thoughts on Carmelita Spats
*Spoilers Ahead*
Don’t get me wrong, Carmelita is a HUGE brat, but I feel like she may be a victim of parental neglect. Maybe not physically, but probably emotionally.
I imagine she has those rich parents that give her toys and other material possessions in place of actual attention and affection. Basically this:
Yes, a child can be spoiled and neglected at the same time.
Where do I get this:
1. Carmelita thrives on attention, especially from adults. (We’ll come back to this)
2. Carmelita is willing to commit crime (and kill animals) to get that attention, even if it’s negative. (There is a correlation between parental abuse/neglect and bad behavior, though not necessarily always)
3. For some reason, Carmelita always wants food. Always. (This implies she’s constantly underfed. I admit this is more a symptom of physical neglect).
4. Carmelita sleepwalks. (Some may take this with a grain of salt, but sleepwalking can be a symptom of trauma) Again, going after food.
5. Carmelita never goes home. We meet her at Prufrock and next time we see her she’s in the Snow Scouts. No mention of stopping at home. What better way to not have to actually watch your kid than to push them off onto someone else.
6. Carmelita’s parents never seem to worry about her after she’s kidnapped. Yes, I’m calling Olaf and Esme’s “adoption” a kidnapping. Even though Carmelita is having a great time being directly praised by a mother and father figure, they still took her without parental permission. Even when Carmelita is spotted with them by Daily Punctilio reporters (and is never in disguise, mind you), there is never a mention of her parents missing a child. You’d think the disappearance of the Spats heiress would be notable, right? At least Esme going with Olaf was reported as a kidnapping, but a little rich girl vanishing from a mountain gets nothing?
All this is mind, I get the impression that maybe Carmelita’s orphan-hate may be some kind of projection. Parental abandonment is also a form of being orphaned after all, though she’d never admit that to anyone, especially herself.
(nudging my liege as we walk past some visibly poisonous black berries) don't they look scrumptious my liege
While I absolutely agree that Lily Potter beat the shit out of snape when he joined the afterlife don’t forget Petunia Dursley.
Lily was estranged from her sister but still trusted her to take care of her son, who was found bleeding and crying on her doorstep after his parents were murdered. Only to find out that they hurt, starved, isolated, lied to, and locked in both a cupboard and then a room with bars on the window the son she died to protect so he could have a better life? I don’t care what the deleted scene said about petunia being sad lily died when she gets to the afterlife it is round two of lily potter MMA smackdown
“Why did she end up here?”
“James–”
“No, that woman destroyed–”
“Hold on–”
“Stop.” A cool, familiar voice, but there’s something warm lacking in it. “Go. I need to talk to her.” A pause. “Alone.”
“…Call me if you need me, Lily,” the man says. There’s the sound of footsteps on grass.
Petunia wrinkles her nose and opens her eyes to blue, blue skies. I died, she thinks. I’m dead.
It’s not such a surprise. She was nearly eighty years old, after all, and it had been many years since Vernon died. What is a surprise is the body she finds when she sits up. She can’t be physically older than 20, the year she had Dudley and moved in with Vernon. The year that Lily–
“Hello, Petunia.”
Petunia scrambles up, heart thundering in her chest, and whirls around. There, right in front of her, for the first time in over sixty years, is Lily.
She’s just as beautiful as she remembered, long red hair framing a clear face. There’s that familiar curl of envy, but it’s duller now, after all these years, and Petunia drinks in the sight of her sister hungrily. She’s standing in a field, white robes falling from her shoulders, and her green eyes are almost the exact same color as the greenery beneath their feet.
Lily’s green eyes are suddenly a lot closer and, oh wow, Petunia is looking at the sky again. She frowns and tentatively reaches up to touch her jaw. It hurts.
But I’m dead, Petunia thinks first. And then, Lily punched me. She lifts her head up as much as she can.
“What,” Lily hisses, fists vibrating at her sides, “the fuck, Petunia?”

Do you have advice on how to use writing prompts? I see so many creators come up with such good short stories with original characters on here based on prompts and I would like to do that too but I just find it hard to go anywhere with them. Especially since I only write fanfic but I want to start writing my own stuff too
How to Use Writing Prompts
I'll let you in on a little secret...
If you sit down to do a writing prompt and expect "a really good story" to flow from your fingertips, you're probably going to be disappointed. Writing prompts that lead to the writing of great stories are one in a million. When you see those stories posted by other writers, what you're not seeing are the countless writing prompts they did before that and since that didn't amount to anything.
Writing prompts aren't really meant to inspire award-winning short fiction. They're meant as exercises... challenges to push you to new limits. If you're finding it hard to go anywhere with a writing prompt, that's good, it really shouldn't be too easy. You want it to force you to do the work of finding the story in an unlikely or unfamiliar scenario. You want it to push your mind into overdrive figuring out who the characters of this story might be and what their individual stories might be. It's the entire point of a writing prompt. Not as a shortcut to writing a great story.
So, keep at it. Don't give up on a challenging writing prompt. Don't say "I find it hard to go anywhere with them." You wouldn't decide to do a puzzle, dump the pieces onto the table, and then say, "I find it hard to go anywhere with this, so I'm putting it away." No, you find all the edges, sort out like colors, look for patterns, start putting pieces together... You have to do the same thing with writing prompts. And honestly, the more you do, the easier it will get. :)

Y'all ever open a book on a new subject, read a little bit, and have to put it back so you can process the way in which your mind was just expanded?
The textile book: okay here is some of the ways that textiles are important to human life
me: Okay!
The textile book: Clothes separate the vulnerable human body from the conditions of the outside world, and in doing so absorb the sweat and debris of human existence, accumulating wear and tear according to the lives we live. In this way, various lifestyles and professions are represented by clothing, and the clothing of a loved one retains the imprint of their physical body and their life being lived, as though the clothes absorb part of the wearer's soul
Me: ...oh
The textile book: The process of weaving a garment and the process of a child being formed in its mother's womb are often referred to using the same language. Likewise, when a baby is born, a blanket or other textile material is the first material object it encounters and protects it. Textiles can create the idea of two things being inextricable, as with being "woven together," or can create the sense of separateness, as with a curtain or veil that separates two rooms or spaces, even separating the living from the dead, or separating two realities, such as a performance ending when the curtain falls
Me: ...oh God
The textile book: Odysseus's wife Penelope undid her weaving in secret every night to delay the advances of her suitors. In this way she was able to turn back the passage of time to allow her husband to come home. Likewise the Lakota tell a story of an old woman embroidering time by embroidering a robe with porcupine quills. If she finishes the embroidery, the world will come to an end, but her faithful dog pulls out the quills whenever her back is turned, turning back the clock and allowing existence to continue.
me: ...is...is...is that why we refer to the fabric of space and time?
The textile book: The technological revolution of textile making is sadly underappreciated. The textile arts are possibly the most fundamental human technology, as once people created string and rope, they could create nets for catching fish and small animals, and bags and baskets for carrying food. In the earliest prehistoric times, the first string or cord perhaps came from sinew, found in the body of an animal. Because of this perhaps the body of a living being could be understood as made of a textile material. Indeed textiles have the function of preserving life, as with a surgeon stitching back together the human body or bandages being placed on a wound. Textile technologies are being used to create life-changing implants to restore function to injured parts of the body, as though a muscle or tendon can be woven and made in this way. Cloth can be used to create a parachute that will save a human's life as they plummet out of the sky. Ultimately, the textile technologies are used to enter new parts of the universe. Me: STOP!! MY MIND IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH FOR THIS
The book is "Textiles: The Whole Story" by Beverly Gordon
:D this is it! The post that got me to borrow this book from my library! This book is constantly rewiring my brain and parts of it constantly slap me in the face when I am going thru daily life and notice textiles.
Like, fiberglass ANYTHING can be considered a textile! Paper? Textile! Chain link fence? Textile!
And more than ever now when I see something like fabric on a couch or mosquito netting I wonder just how much work it would have taken if it was non-factory made. How many people have still had their hands in making it now.
I never understood why so many cultures placed such importance on textile gifts as ritual, like many native americans gifting blankets. I get it now.
Tons of other stuff too and it's all the time!
And I'm only halfway through!
Anyways OP thank you for bringing this into my life it's literally reshaping the way I think in a way I'm constantly in awe of <3
(the book if anyone was curious)
Here! I found it in an online archive!
It functions as a digital library, so you have to sign in and wait your turn. I'm not sure why you have to do that with a digital book, but it's free so i don't care.
304 p. : 27 cm
what means writing to you? for me it often feels like something discomfortable to do (but I love to read your words)
What a loaded question :,) in simple terms I think to write means to witness both immense suffering and joy. It’s to exist in the extremes and let yourself drift without being fully annihilated by it. Almost like the eye of the tornado maybe.

I will always reblog this.
I once spent three hours scouring the internet to find this comic again, I will not let that be repeated.
