Today marks the 26th anniversary of the École Polytechnique massacre, in Montreal, Canada. A cowardly, misogynic act which left 14 promising women dead, simply because they were women:
Twenty-five-year-old Marc Lépine, armed with a Mini-14 rifle and a hunting knife, shot 28 people, killing 14 women, before committing suicide. He began his attack by entering a classroom at the university, where he separated the male and female students. After claiming that he was “fighting feminism” and calling the women “a bunch of feminists,” he shot all nine women in the room, killing six. He then moved through corridors, the cafeteria, and another classroom, specifically targeting women to shoot. Overall, he killed fourteen women and injured ten other women and four men in just under 20 minutes before turning the gun on himself.[1][2] His suicide note claimed political motives and blamed feminists for ruining his life. The note included a list of 19 Quebec women whom Lépine considered to be feminists and apparently wished to kill.[3]
After this despicable act, Canada adopted gun control measures. Since gun control measures were adopted there has not been another mass shooting killing more than 10 people in Canada. Since École Polytechnique there has only been 9 massacres in Canada; 9 in 26 years.
Please remember these women.

alton brown: contestants, you have precisely one hour to assemble a dish using only one ingredient (he takes the cover off of the sliver platter to reveal a sad looking bag of pepperoni)
bald chef jeff: ok, so right away i’m thinkin pepperoni pizza. so i go to the pantry to get myself some bread, but there was a rabid dog waiting for me within, so i instantly closed the door before i was mauled and killed by this rabid dog. so my second idea was to assemble a favorite of mine: a pepperoni geyser. now in order to make a pepperoni geyser, you need a floating point unit and a pepperoni propulsion device, which can easily be assembled by [REDACTED BY US GOVERNMENT] so right away i grab the ice cream machine and [REDACTED BY US GOVERNMENT] and that should do it.
alton brown: 3, 2, 1! time’s up, chefs! chef dianne, what have you prepared for us today?
chef dianne: well today, i have prepared for you a dish we always used to make back home in louisana. it’s called “stacks”
(it’s just a stack of pepperoni)
alton brown: revered food columnist Vito Scaletta, what do you think of the “stacks” chef dianne cheyenne has prepared for you today?
revered food columnist vito scaletta, without taking a bite of his stack: i like it. it brings me back to my poker days, makes me feel like i’m winnin’ big!

Using their Bro-ness for good, not evil
So a tiny story: on Black Friday a few weeks ago I went to Gamestop to buy my brother a game for Christmas, and I noticed this older man was watching me like a hawk. He was loitering around the front of the store without really buying anything, and every time I glanced at him out of the corner of my eye he was looking at me. I went to look at the PS4 games, and he was looking at something right behind me. I checked out the Nintendo games, and he was looking at them too. I was the only woman in the store, by the way.
By the time I got in line to pay he was loitering at the front of the store again, and I just had that feeling that he was going to try and take the game I just bought, or steal my purse, as soon as I left the store. OR, he was going to try and follow me home. And I know I don’t have to explain that terror to any woman reading this, but all I could think was that I’m in this Gamestop alone with at least twenty other men and something is about to happen. I’m beginning to freak out, to the point where I’ve just pulled my pepper spray out of my purse and into the pocket of my coat.
So there I am, next in line to pay, and there is this GIGANTIC dudebro right behind me, and I say gigantic as a 6 foot tall woman. He says, “Ma’am? Don’t be offended, but would it be alright if I walked you to your car?” and I was like “Are you serious?” and he was like “There are some weird guys in here right now. Have you noticed that guy watching you?” and then I showed the dudebro the pepper spray in my pocket and he was like “Right on. Would you still let me walk you to your car?” and I said yes.
So I paid, and waited while HE paid, and he walked me to my car. And just as I was getting in, the weird guy who’d been loitering came out of the store, saw me and my dudebro, and turned around and walked away in the opposite direction.
In short: men who recognize that women are unsafe in dark alleys, college campuses, grocery stores, gas stations and retail stores and do something about it are the kind of quality men that this world needs more of.
Please for the love of god yes.
Additional story time: For reference I am 5'2" on a good day and cry if you sneeze at me wrong.
It was late evening and I stopped by one of those strip malls on my way home from work to pick up some take out and some beer, but loitering between the liquor store and the takeout place was a group of elderly men and their truck. I said elderly like late 50s. But I recognized them as men who go around town all using the same story that they’re homeless or they were brought here by ambulance and just needed “a few dollars to get back across town.” Unfortunately for they they blew their cover when they started hitting up the same businesses with the same story. (Some had even gotten belligerent when people turned them away. Cops had begun to have to get involved.)
One of these men had come into my work before and was a big man. So as I was checking out at the liquor story there was another guy buying some beer too and I asked him quietly if he would walk with me on the way to his car so I could get to the takeout place. (It was aaaalll the way down on the other end of the plaza.)
And he was like no problem bruh. And walked me past those dudes and asked if I was ok getting to my car after and I was like yea dude cuz my car is like right there. Dudes being bros is awesome.

So they’ve already put up the Christmas lights at the local shopping center right and one part of the display are these big festive phrases hung between the buildings; y’know standard stuff like “Believe” and “Wish”-- and for whatever reason, “Ding dong”. But the thing is if you stand on one side of the road half of it is blocked from view so it just looks like someone decided to write “DONG” in massive fuck-off glowing letters and hang it in the middle of the high street and tbh it’s the closest thing to a Christmas miracle I’ve ever seen

Poet Aja Monet Confronts Police Brutality Against Black Women With #SayHerName
“Melissa Williams,” Aja Monet reads, “Darnisha Harris.” Her voice is strong; it marches along, but it shakes a little, although not from nerves. She’s performing a poem that includes the forgotten names of girls and women who’ve been injured or killed by the police. She finishes forcefully, then pauses, exhales. “Can I do that again?” she asks. “It’s my first time reading it out loud, and … ” she trails off.
Listen to the full poem here.

this is your seasonal reminder that spock is a jewish character played by a jewish actor and the entire alien race he is has spirituality and philosophy based in judaism. If I catch any of you drawing art or writing fic of spock celebrating christmas I will come after you.

This is exactly the kind of thing Roddenberry had in mind I’m sure
Roddenberry was an antisemite and it deeply hurt Leonard Nimoy (as well as William Shatner and Walter Koenig), so you can take your culturally-christian faux-idealism crap and stay right where you are.
ˆˆˆPlease read thisˆˆˆ
Everything coded Jewish about Spock/the Vulcans/Planet Vulcan should be credited to Leonard Nimoy himself as he came up with it all. Not Roddenberry. I appreciate everything Roddenberry did for scifi but TOS is not full of blatantly racist tropes (Original Klingons, anyone?) to paint an image of what is “alien” for no reason.
