Lucio. His name is Lucio, now.
He had read it in a book, once. His tribe had sacked a small caravan, and one of the trunks had a whole bunch of books about adventures in fantastic lands. They were illustrated, beautiful and and full of colorful images of people dressed up in satin and silk, of palaces with golden ballrooms, of knights in armor that shined like the sun in the face of their enemies. That's where he had seen the name; the hero of his favorite of the books fought a mighty dragon and was hailed as the hero of a nation. The hero's name was Lucio, and Lucio was his name ever since.
And now nobody knew anything else! He was Lucio, the mercenary captain, the expert swordsman who cut through the enemies like they were the wheat in the fields they were fighting in. His soldiers cheered for him as he swept through the opposing forces, they sang songs with him around the fire at night, they listened to his stories about his adventures with bright eyes. Being Lucio was amazing!
When he met Count Spada of the coastal state of Vesuvia, Lucio was never happier to be Lucio and not... not someone else. To Spada, Lucio was a hero, he was someone who could be trusted to protect him, he was strong, and he was worthy of the Count's attention.
Lucio had never guessed how intoxicating having the attention of someone like Count Spada could be. The man seemed like the grand kings in those books, like he could command armies as easy as the sun commands the flowers to turn his way.
And he thought Lucio was worth his attention! And he was! Lucio, the hero, the captain, the grand adventurer who could slay dragons if he needed to. Lucio was someone who won battles, who protected kings, who could slay dragons, who could defeat demons.
Lucio was important to great warriors and powerful leaders. Lucio deserved the care and attention and love that these people gave him.
Lucio was worthy all of this in a way that Montag could never be no matter how hard he had tried.
But who cares about Montag? Not Lucio.
