Not to be cliche, but Jane Austen's novels are a lot about how great power & wealth should come with great responsibility, and how most of the wealthy and powerful fail at that. She's asking questions like, "Is that insanely wealthy person polite, charitable, and considerate in a way that befits his station in life?" and she's finding most of them wanting.

Darcy being rude at a party matters because he's so wealthy. Emma insulting Miss Bates is so horrible because she's so wealthy. Those in power were supposed to set a higher standard and be an example of morality and correct conduct to those of the lower classes. While we might not totally agree with this concept today, that is why their behaviour matters so much to Jane Austen. And it's valid because a person who is careless with that much wealth and power can cause a lot of damage. What if everyone in Highbury decided it was now acceptable to shun Miss Bates? It would be diasterious for her. Darcy could easily ruin a woman's marriage prospects. It mattered.

This is why I get so annoyed when people are all, "Of course Darcy was rude! All these women are throwing themselves at him all the time. He's tired of it. His life is so sad!" because that's the price of being an heir to a massive fortune. The poor poor little baby is in the top 1% of the 1% just because he was born male into the right family. As a balance for this insane luck, he's expected to be benevolent, charitable, and polite. It's a pretty small ask, and he's not doing it. (Though he is great at the charity part, which Elizabeth discovers when she visits Pemberley). "But he never knows if someone actually loves him for him!" Then he can give his entire fortune to me. Problem solved. Sorry, if he wants to be filthy rich he has freaking obligations.

being a queer german person and seeing the news fail to verbalise that the CSD attack in berlin was motivated by homophobia feels really crazy. i don't give a fuck where this person is from, the person who did this was homophobic and wanted us dead, and that is what we should be talking about. extremism has become far too normalised in this country and beyond. for one fucking second, talk about how normalised homophobia and is, talk about what a sad day it is for queer folks, about how we deserve to feel safe and that homophobia has no place in this country. can you actually care about us for once. stop using us to fuel your islamophobia or hatred of immigrants.

this type of joking comment, I think, really boils down to the classic dichotomy of art/pornography. there's pornography (smut) where the sex is, well, sexy, and that entails a removal of awkwardness (and, I would argue, the awkwardness is from deviance from normal/healthy sex--but that's a point for a different post). it's smut and you're not supposed to think too hard, it can't be uncomfortable, and sex being realistic, human, makes people uncomfortable and demands effort. this is also why characters in smut are often shallow--depth requires a sort of discomfort. your brain is supposed to glide across it without much, if any, resistance.

haha why would we want people being cringey and awkward during sex, that ruins the point! haha why are they wasting so much time on backstory. ew gross why would put something like that in. the point being: sex is a fun leisure pursuit, so you don't have to think, or be embarrassed, or try to understand. because those things aren't 'sexy' and if they aren't 'sexy', it's a failure.

also, just to add on to this: I love when sex is awkward and weird in books. it makes it so much better.

I cannot overstate how much more I like it when smut is a little realistic and sometimes goes a bit wrong and that doesn't mean that the relationship is doomed. Or where there are unfortunate noises, or they tease each other, or they end up laughing uncontrollably.

If the sex is super perfect, that often (not always, but often) strips it of all character and connection to the actual plot of the story, and frankly that doesn't interest me in the least. It's boring.

(I also get bored quickly if the sex is made out to be good when it really wouldn't be. If a woman with no experience of penetration just got entered by the biggest dick in existence in one hard thrust with no preparation and you're telling me she almost comes on that first thrust? I will not believe you. Your character is basically a unicorn or you're just wrong.)

Which is not to say that characters can't have good sex that isn't boring, they absolutely can, but too often that kind of smut slides into being too perfect, too picture perfect, too much like porn, and in that case... why am I reading a novel? Why am I reading a fic? I might as well go check out literotica and read some generic porn that at least is honest about it.

And this is v much a ymmv thing, some people genuinely don't care as long as the characters have the right names and the narrative claims that they have orgasms, but it's depressing as hell that people think that is how smut SHOULD be. The potential to explore character and plot within a sex scene is enormous, and the notion that it should just be about two characters having superlative sex that is divorced from anything else happening in the story is just, god... kill me now.
