I'm a passionate fan of The Lord of the Rings, both books and movies, in particular the characters Frodo Baggins and Sam Gamgee and the actors who portrayed them, Elijah Wood and Sean Astin. So mostly that's what you'll find here, along with bits and bobs of other interests such as dogs, horse racing, animals in general, progressive politics, Whose Line Is It Anyway, and Jeremy Northam.

A #meteor streaked through the skies above Russia’s Urals region

Meanwhile in Russia of the Day: Meteor Debris Explodes in Siberia

In the early hours of Friday, a meteor streaked through the skies in Chelyabinsk region of Siberia, Russia before exploding above ground, injuring nearly a thousand people from the blast that shattered glass in buildings nearby. Luckily, no fatality has been reported. The spectacular explosion was also captured on camera from several different vantage points around the area, including this dashboard camera footage which has racked up more than two million views in the matter of few hours.

It reminds me of the “bike to work” movement. That is also portrayed as white, but in my city more than half of the people on bike are not white. I was once talking to a white activist who was photographing “bike commuters” and had only pictures of white people with the occasional “black professional” I asked her why she didn’t photograph the delivery people, construction workers etc. … ie. the black and Hispanic and Asian people… and she mumbled something about trying to “improve the image of biking” then admitted that she didn’t really see them as part of the “green movement” since they “probably have no choice” – I was so mad I wanted to quit working on the project she and I were collaborating on. So, in the same way when people in a poor neighborhood grow food in their yards … it’s just being poor– but when white people do it they are saving the earth or something.

A satellite image shows the northeastern United States blanketed in snow following the recent blizzard.  A clear line between where the snows fell and where it didn’t is seen cutting across New Jersey.  And if you look closely, you might see the face of Falkor from The Neverending Story.  And now you can’t unsee it.  (Photo: NASA via AFP-Getty / The Telegraph)
