a scene i feel should have been in the movies
“For the millionth time, Sam, you needn’t call me Mr. Frodo,” Frodo said. “We’ve been through enough together that you might as well be on informal terms with me.” He wiggled his four-fingered right hand at Sam who smiled grimly.
“I suppose that’s right, but it still doesn’t feel right, if you catch my meaning.” Sam shifted uncomfortably as Frodo turned weary eyes on the gardener.
“Sam.” Frodo stood and crossed the room to stand by Sam’s side. “We have been through so much together. There is a love between us that does not recognize my perceived superiority to you. We are equal, though even that is not quite right. If not for you, the fate of Middle Earth would be drastically different from what it is now. It was you, not I, that have saved all. It was as though I was a cart for the cursed Ring, and you were...well, you were like your pony Bill. Against all odds, you saved everything, master Samwise.”
Sam blushed and turned away, fiddling with his flowers, but Frodo turned him back. Their eyes met, and a shared weariness passed between them.
“We have known much, Sam, and you were by my side for all of it. I would no more want you to call me ‘sir’ than Legolas or Gandalf, or anyone else.”
