you should be able to call into work if you get a story idea. like iâm really sorry i canât come in today im going to need 72 hours off to cope with my visions of This Guy
It would seem a whole new kind of AO3 reader/writer is emerging and it is becoming clear not everyone quite understands how the website community works. Here is some basic guidance on how most people expect you to go about using AO3 to keep this a fun community archive that funtions correctly:
Kudos is for when the story was interesting enough to make you finish reading. If it sucked or was badly written, you probably left. If you finished - you kudos.
If you liked it, you should comment. It can be long and detailed or a literal keysmash. Writers don't care, we just love comments.
No critisism unless the author has specifically asked or agreed to hear it. Even constructive critisism is a no-no unless an author note tells you it's okay. Many people write as a fun hobby or a way to cope with, among other things, insecurity. Don't ruin that for them.
Do not comment to ask the author to write/update something else. It's tacky and off-putting and will probably have the opposite effect than the one you want.
There is no algorithm, it's an archive. Use the search and filter function to add/remove the pairings/characters/tropes etc. you want to read about and it will find you the fics that fit the bill.
For this to work, writers must tag and rate stories. This avoids readers finding the wrong things and missing the stuff they want. I don't care how cringy that trope is in your eyes - it gets tagged.
Character A/Character B means a ROMANTIC or SEXUAL relationship of some kind. Character A&Character B is PLANTONIC, like friendship or family.
Nothing is banned. This is an implicit rule because banning one thing is a slipperly slope to banning another and another, until nothing is allowed anymore. Do not expect anyone to censor for you. Because of the tags system, you are responsible for your own reading experience.
People can create new chapters and sequels/fic series any time after they "complete" a story. So it's considered perfectly normal to subscribe, even to a finished story. You can even subscribe to the author instead just to cover your bases.
Do not repost stories or change the publishing date without an extremely good reason (like a complete top to bottom rewrite). It's an archive, not social media. No one cares what's the most recent, only what fits their tag needs.
Avoid deleting a story you wrote if you hate it - orphan it so others can still enjoy it, without it being connected to you anymore.
This is a creative fanfiction archive. No essays on your insights or theories please. There are other places for that.
I KNOW there's plenty more I missed but I'm trying to cover most of the basics that people seem to be struggling with.
I invite anyone to add to this, but please explain, don't berate.
To the people in the notes who are insisting that they have the right to leave negative feedback on AO3:
What youâre not understanding is that fandom is not a service, itâs a community. I saw someone compare leaving a comment on AO3 to reviewing a product on Amazon - if you didnât like the product, youâre going to say so. But fanworks are not products and you didnât pay money for them. They were shared with you.
Leaving un-asked-for criticism in AO3 comments isnât like reviewing a product you were disappointed with. Itâs like going to a friendâs house when theyâve cooked a meal and telling them all the things that are wrong with the food. Sure, you can do it, but itâs rude as hell and they are probably not going to invite you to dinner again.
("Can you leave crit in commentsâ has been a debate as long as Iâve been in fandom, but 20 years ago the argument was âIâm helping the writer improve!â and not âI am a consumer with a right to complain.â Fandom has gotten more creepily capitalistic over the decades but jerks are evergreen, I guess.)
I just put on comment moderation on one of my recent fics because the response is something less than kind. I think it's a decent fic and I'd prefer if someone doesn't have something nice to say they just exit out of the fic and find something they do love.
I fully understand as a writer that I won't always be your cup of tea. You may like 80% of what I write and hate the other 20% but I do this as an escape for my mental health so if it's sucking me into a dark place reading your comment the I'm going to start by deleting your comment and if that doesn't work I will turn on moderation on all comments again.
Let's not ruin this for writers. I don't want to have to micromanage what you comment but I will to protect my peace.
Peter trailed after Tony with a blanket wrapped around his shoulders.
âCan you stop?â Tony hissed, âIâm about to go into a business meeting.â
âBut I donât feel good and Iâm cold and this makes me feel like a super hero.â Peter sniffled.
Tony glanced around and quietly said, âYou are a super hero, Pete.â
âYeah, but this makes me feel like one.â
âNot the suit I made you?â
Peter shook his head, âThatâs just normal clothes at this point.â
âUnbelievable.â Tony pinched the bridge of his nose, âGo to my office. Wait for me there. This is why I asked you to stay home.â
âI donât like to be alone when Iâm sick.â Peter whined, âI told you that.â
Tony forced himself to relax. Peter couldnât help that he got sick on a day Tony had an important meeting. He also couldnât help the fact that he was a bit clingy since coming back from the snap and finding May gone.
âI know, Bud. Iâm sorry. I shouldnât be snapping at you. Iâm going to make this as quick as possible. Can you please go to my office until Iâm done?â
Peter finally gave a nod of agreement and turned to walk away.
Tony opened the door to the meeting and everyone turned his way. He paused for a second, âNope, Iâm sorry. My kid is more important.â
Peter flopped onto Tony and Pepperâs bed while they packed for a trip, âIâm begging now. Take me with.â
Pepper laughed softly as she put another shirt in her suitcase, âI tried to tell him you would want to come.â
âItâs going to be a bunch of boring meetings, Kid. Why are you begging to come? Did you and May have a fight orââ Tony frowned and then snapped his fingers, âYou think if you come with then you are ungrounded.â
âPfftt.â Peter rolled his eyes, âNo. I just miss Pepper. I never get to see her.â
Pepper paused to ruffle his hair, âThatâs my favorite lie.â
âI donât know why the two of you are so suspicious. Honestly, maybe someone should be asking the two of you questions.â Peter said as he pulled two shirts out of Tonyâs bag.
Tony grabbed them, âStop. Now Iâm getting annoyed.â
âSo thatâs a yes?â
âIâm calling May.â Tony walked out of the room.
âBut Mr. Starkââ Peter trailed after his mentor.
Pepper found her passport to move to her purse, âFriday? You think Peterâs going to convince him?â
âIâve calculated that the probability is at 98% based on previous situations where the boss says no repeatedly and Peter continues to ask.â Friday confirmed.
âItâs those brown eyes.â Pepper thought out loud.

This kid. How did Tony end up with a teenager? How was this his life? He didnât even get to enjoy the cute little kid part, he was just here for the sassy-rebellion phase. âSeriously kid, itâs past midnight. You have to be up in six hours. What are you doing?â
âI just,â Peter shrugged, âcouldnât sleep.â
Tony noticed the way the boy was playing with his mask, picking at his fingers, and generally avoiding his mentorâs gaze. He sighed. Maybe now wasnât time for Stern-Dad, maybe Peter needed Comfort-Dad right now.
