AO3 Etiquette

It would seem a whole new kind of AO3 reader/writer is emerging and it is becoming clear not everyone quite understands how the website community works. Here is some basic guidance on how most people expect you to go about using AO3 to keep this a fun community archive that funtions correctly:

Kudos is for when the story was interesting enough to make you finish reading. If it sucked or was badly written, you probably left. If you finished - you kudos.

If you liked it, you should comment. It can be long and detailed or a literal keysmash. Writers don't care, we just love comments.

No critisism unless the author has specifically asked or agreed to hear it. Even constructive critisism is a no-no unless an author note tells you it's okay. Many people write as a fun hobby or a way to cope with, among other things, insecurity. Don't ruin that for them.

Do not comment to ask the author to write/update something else. It's tacky and off-putting and will probably have the opposite effect than the one you want.

There is no algorithm, it's an archive. Use the search and filter function to add/remove the pairings/characters/tropes etc. you want to read about and it will find you the fics that fit the bill.

For this to work, writers must tag and rate stories. This avoids readers finding the wrong things and missing the stuff they want. I don't care how cringy that trope is in your eyes - it gets tagged.

Character A/Character B means a ROMANTIC or SEXUAL relationship of some kind. Character A&Character B is PLANTONIC, like friendship or family.

Nothing is banned. This is an implicit rule because banning one thing is a slipperly slope to banning another and another, until nothing is allowed anymore. Do not expect anyone to censor for you. Because of the tags system, you are responsible for your own reading experience.

People can create new chapters and sequels/fic series any time after they "complete" a story. So it's considered perfectly normal to subscribe, even to a finished story. You can even subscribe to the author instead just to cover your bases.

Do not repost stories or change the publishing date without an extremely good reason (like a complete top to bottom rewrite). It's an archive, not social media. No one cares what's the most recent, only what fits their tag needs.

Avoid deleting a story you wrote if you hate it - orphan it so others can still enjoy it, without it being connected to you anymore.

This is a creative fanfiction archive. No essays on your insights or theories please. There are other places for that.

I KNOW there's plenty more I missed but I'm trying to cover most of the basics that people seem to be struggling with.

I invite anyone to add to this, but please explain, don't berate.

To the people in the notes who are insisting that they have the right to leave negative feedback on AO3:

What you’re not understanding is that fandom is not a service, it’s a community. I saw someone compare leaving a comment on AO3 to reviewing a product on Amazon - if you didn’t like the product, you’re going to say so. But fanworks are not products and you didn’t pay money for them. They were shared with you.

Leaving un-asked-for criticism in AO3 comments isn’t like reviewing a product you were disappointed with. It’s like going to a friend’s house when they’ve cooked a meal and telling them all the things that are wrong with the food. Sure, you can do it, but it’s rude as hell and they are probably not going to invite you to dinner again.

("Can you leave crit in comments” has been a debate as long as I’ve been in fandom, but 20 years ago the argument was “I’m helping the writer improve!” and not “I am a consumer with a right to complain.” Fandom has gotten more creepily capitalistic over the decades but jerks are evergreen, I guess.)

I just put on comment moderation on one of my recent fics because the response is something less than kind. I think it's a decent fic and I'd prefer if someone doesn't have something nice to say they just exit out of the fic and find something they do love.

I fully understand as a writer that I won't always be your cup of tea. You may like 80% of what I write and hate the other 20% but I do this as an escape for my mental health so if it's sucking me into a dark place reading your comment the I'm going to start by deleting your comment and if that doesn't work I will turn on moderation on all comments again.

Let's not ruin this for writers. I don't want to have to micromanage what you comment but I will to protect my peace.

“Stop that.” Tony told Peter.

“I’m not doing anything.” Peter raised an eyebrow at his mentor.

“I know you. You were thinking of it.”

“You can’t prove anything!” Peter stuck out his tongue.

Tony went back to looking at his screen and suddenly felt something his the back of his head, “Peter Parker. I just told you not to do that.”

“You didn’t say that I shouldn’t use your head as a goal for paper football.” Peter shrugged, “Maybe you should have been more specific.”

“Get out of my lab. You’re annoying me.” Tony flipped to his suit’s updates on the screen.

“Fine. I’m going to find Pepper.”

“Okay.”

“To see if she needs a mentee.” Peter sang as he walked.

“Have fun.”

“And be my mom…” Peter added.

Tony turned around, “You haven’t even called me dad. That’s not fair or okay. Get back here!”

Peter laughed, “You were the one who told me to leave.”

“Changed my mind.” Tony mumbled while reading something on the screen.

Peter let the silence build for a bit, “I can call you dad if you want.”

“If that’s what you want.” Tony tried to play it casual, “I’d be fine with that.”

Peter smiled before going back to his homework.

Tony: *glances back at Peter*

Peter:

Tony: Eh, close enough!

Peter trailed after Tony with a blanket wrapped around his shoulders.

“Can you stop?” Tony hissed, “I’m about to go into a business meeting.”

“But I don’t feel good and I’m cold and this makes me feel like a super hero.” Peter sniffled.

Tony glanced around and quietly said, “You are a super hero, Pete.”

“Yeah, but this makes me feel like one.”

“Not the suit I made you?”

Peter shook his head, “That’s just normal clothes at this point.”

“Unbelievable.” Tony pinched the bridge of his nose, “Go to my office. Wait for me there. This is why I asked you to stay home.”

“I don’t like to be alone when I’m sick.” Peter whined, “I told you that.”

Tony forced himself to relax. Peter couldn’t help that he got sick on a day Tony had an important meeting. He also couldn’t help the fact that he was a bit clingy since coming back from the snap and finding May gone.

“I know, Bud. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t be snapping at you. I’m going to make this as quick as possible. Can you please go to my office until I’m done?”

Peter finally gave a nod of agreement and turned to walk away.

Tony opened the door to the meeting and everyone turned his way. He paused for a second, “Nope, I’m sorry. My kid is more important.”

Tony let go of the door and it closed on its own.

Peter flopped onto Tony and Pepper’s bed while they packed for a trip, “I’m begging now. Take me with.”

Pepper laughed softly as she put another shirt in her suitcase, “I tried to tell him you would want to come.”

“It’s going to be a bunch of boring meetings, Kid. Why are you begging to come? Did you and May have a fight or—“ Tony frowned and then snapped his fingers, “You think if you come with then you are ungrounded.”

“Pfftt.” Peter rolled his eyes, “No. I just miss Pepper. I never get to see her.”

Pepper paused to ruffle his hair, “That’s my favorite lie.”

“I don’t know why the two of you are so suspicious. Honestly, maybe someone should be asking the two of you questions.” Peter said as he pulled two shirts out of Tony’s bag.

Tony grabbed them, “Stop. Now I’m getting annoyed.”

“So that’s a yes?”

“I’m calling May.” Tony walked out of the room.

“But Mr. Stark—“ Peter trailed after his mentor.

Pepper found her passport to move to her purse, “Friday? You think Peter’s going to convince him?”

“I’ve calculated that the probability is at 98% based on previous situations where the boss says no repeatedly and Peter continues to ask.” Friday confirmed.

“It’s those brown eyes.” Pepper thought out loud.

“Agreed.” Friday confirmed.

Unfortunately, he’s scheduled to attend a Stark Industries Gala the following night, so he’s just going to have to grin and bear it. He’ll do anything to get through the evening without disappointing Mr Stark. Even if it means hiding what could be a serious injury.
