My Academia Aesthetic (Part 2)
- Drinking coffee that’s too hot in the library while I curse the name of the professor who refuses to see the good in what I can do.
-Going to office hours just to make sure my favorite professors are doing okay
-Sending heart emojis over text to my professor just so knows I care
-Texting my friends during our zoom lectures to see their reactions in live time.
-Writing a grant for my dream thesis while surrounded by a haze of drunken fog
-Sending an email of my accomplishments to the professor who thought I was worth a B at best
-Be-friending the freshman just so they know they’ll be alright
-Taking hours in a practice room just to feel something
-Hours spent planning dreams with friends
-Getting really excited when someone comes to me with their thesis
-Writing an entire play in a night
the way men think eating meat feeds into their masculinity is so fucking funny like miss thing you didn’t wrestle that shit with your bare hands you took your dumpy ass to costco in your wife’s pt cruiser you might as well be a drag queen at this point
certified iconic post
me writing any kind of academic paper
Chaotic academics during quarantine: Reading until ungodly hours, sleeping in later than the world should allow, waking in a frantic haze anxiously staring at the clock and how the day ticked by during your deep slumber, anxiously thumbing through a book to catch up (when will you ever have this much time to read again?), staying in bed with a mound of half-read books at your side, a cup of black tea becoming cold as you forget it whilst inhaling Oscar Wilde and Edgar Allan Poe, reading The Yellow Wall Paper with trembling hands, muttering poetry under your breath, isolated.
so, its about time i get my own friendgroup of obsessive, academic, generally like minded people and we all end up falling in love with each other in various semi-tragic combinations, and maybe someone ends up dead but its ok it was for the aesthetic
“For us, everything was a performance.” A small, private smile catches me off guard and I glance down, hoping he won’t see it. “Everything poetic.”
-M.L Rio “If we were villans”
a new concept: idiot academia
where u have book smarts but have absolutely no common sense
Some REAL Dark Academia things:
Working real hard to actually excel at academics, because you realize that reading The Secret History or The Picture Of Dorian Gray once doesn't make you an academic.
Treating everyone, specially unfortunate people with kindness, because acting like an aloof douche doesn't give you Cool Points.
Holding yourself with dignity, instead of begging other people for scraps of attention and validation. No, really. Stop trying to act like a misunderstood serial killer, Susan, it's embarrassing.
Not falling into the traps of elitist racism, casual misogyny or anti-semitism, because you try to be intelligent and introspective, instead of following in the gross footsteps of some shitty, white eighteenth century writer.
Not having a superiority complex over the fact that you don't listen to pop music, because you are smart enough to respect art of all kinds, or at the very least, respect the fact that people are inherently different.
Okay now the fun stuff:
Short red nails
Reading to expand your mind
Flowy dresses or leather jackets or pajamas, because Dark Academia can be DIVERSE, babeyyyyy
Fluffy fat cats named Oscar
Toasting to Aphrodite and Persephone
Healthy friendships and relationships, because we need to STOP romanticising toxicity.
Handwritten birthday cards with pressed flowers
BLUEBERRIES
Lana Del Rey and One Direction. Hozier and Dua Lipa. The Shins and Nirvana. Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. Sam Fender and Coldplay. Taylor Swift and The Velvet Underground. Lorde and Florence. 5SOS and The Beatles. Zayn and Rihanna. Seriously, listen to whoever the fuck you want to listen to. Dark Academia is NOT a music genre. Listen to everything. To define is to limit.
Dancing at midnight
Fairy tales and horror stories
Falling in love
Only red lipstick on an otherwise bare face
Celebrating the birthdays and deathdays of your favourite authors and poets
Quoting Oscar Wilde to your houseplant
Ivory coloured notebooks
Watching Kill Your Darlings and Yearning
Watching Gone Girl and Yearning
Rock music in the shower
Constellations tattooed over your body, because you contain the entire universe in you babey
Doctoral programs and scholarships
Talking to stray animals like they're your old friends
Lying in the grass on a sunny day
Learning languages at your own pace, because you got nothing to prove to nobody
Studying to learn
Trying your hardest to live your life for YOU
Being who YOU want to be
Pushing yourself through dark times, because you try so hard to believe in yourself
Healthy sleep schedules, except the occasional all nighter to indulge your inner vampire
Happiness
Melancholy
Hope, and the desire to live forever
fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck
Thanks for this.
my kind of academia
- cigarette trousers, beige shirts and tweed blazers
- essay ideas, poetry and classic lit quotes all up my arms in smudged biro
- candle-lit room with books all over the floor, planning an intricate essay on why latin is not dead
- pouring redbull into coffee, telling myself that everything is fine
- leather notebooks full of notes
- adding another tablespoon of coffee for good measure
- deep cleaning my room and finding old trinkets and poems
- sitting in a tree with a book, whispering the words to the leaves
- danse macabre playing as i lie on the floor pretending i’m in a grand theatre
- stuffing torn out pages of poetry under my pillow in hopes it will make me more creative (and pretentious)
- another tablespoon of coffee?
- walking through a field until i find the perfect spot to sit and read
- ignoring the essays my professor asks me to write in favour of ones i find interesting (he doesn’t mind)
- emailing my professor telling him i’ve just finished this book and he has to read it
- reorganising my desk every few days until it has the right level of aesthetic
- wishing desperately to live near a majestic old library but making do with the crummy council one
- walking 50 minutes to go to the sweet little coffee shop with the pretty barista
- crying because of quarantine and the coffee shop is closed
- tattered sketchbooks filled with anatomy sketches
- finding the most awkward way to sit as i thumb through edgar allen poe
- candles
- walking at midnight, sharing poetry with the stars
- switching between strumming my guitar and playing loud, dramatic pieces of mozart on my piano
- hearing a word and scrabbling for a pen to write it on my arm because i must use this word every day for the rest of my life
just...random things i find myself doing
this is not Quarantine… i am not on Lockdown… i am simply a princess stuck in a tower, waiting for my hot lady knight…
Raise your hand if you grew up using literature and school as a form of escapism from the effects that generational traumas had on your life, resulting in an emotional attachment to academia and you never really living your teen years out to the fullest because of this.
guys lets romanticize critical consumption in dark academia. i’ve seen posts about throwing yourself fully into unhealthy lifestyles after reading one book etc, but what’s a lot nicer is reading the literature, and considering the fact that it was made by flawed people who probably did unhealthy things, and then enjoying the hell out of reading the book anyway!! because thinking for yourself is sexy.
How am I supposed to live the dark academia aesthetic if Im failing my classes?
