Went to the grocery store with my kindergartener. We weighed some bananas: 2 pounds even. We weighed a watermelon: 4 pounds even. We weighed some mangos: a little over 1 pound. We weighed the watermelon AND the bananas: 6 pounds even.

“That’s funny” said the child “because 2+4=6 and two pounds and four pounds is six pounds. It’s like the same as math!”

“What happens if you add 6+1?”

“SEVEN”

“andy weir provided a packet to the creature shop that was like a packet of eridian biology and stuff but there wasn’t much about eridian culture or eridian sociology and i made a bunch of choices going in because i just needed to have like a ‘who am i?’ right? 

[…] and i made a decision that rocky’s species, that eridians are really social animals that in fact are like a beehive or a pod of dolphins - it’s a unique and really integrated ecosystem of everybody doing their [specific] part. and the fact that rocky had to fly that ship for about 45 years - longer than grace has been alive, i wanna point that out - he’s been alone on that ship, having to run that by himself and- ryan and i would talk about that, one day we sat down and he was like “so what’s the movie from rocky’s perspective?” and i was like “oh it’s like ‘alien’, […] like he’s in a ‘contagion’ movie by himself and he has no idea what’s going on.”

he’s basically in castaway by himself which of course ryan is too but like, one reason why we never cut to the past of rocky is like, i think it was really horrifying! i don’t think rocky has slept in however many years and so a thing i was really struggling with is this idea of like “rocky must watch sleep” because how do you make that a need as opposed to like, a cute idea? and i just had to make the decision that […] he has a lot of unprocessed trauma around the things that he doesn’t understand and how much he is blaming himself because he’s the guy who fixes, he’s the guy who fixes and there was something really freeing about deciding that rocky was a deeply emotional, deeply anxious, deeply horrified person - being - that is trying to move through that in some way and how that affects the early scenes with him until there’s a point in the story where you can see we’ve physically softened rocky’s behaviour, because he’s finally feeling more safe and ok but all of that lore, all of that information [was essential].

i also decided, this is just a small nerdy thing, that there was actually some of his family, was on that ship too.”

chapter 11: august

summary:

“Father…” Adrien said. The distance between them was eons wide, insurmountable. All of Adrien’s drive and confidence, his fighting spirit, evaporated in an instant. His hands shook. His mouth went dry. Silence crawled down his throat.

Adrien swallowed thickly. Somehow, he spoke.

“Can I go to school this year?”

Spectral light fades and the show's over, curtains drawn. Dusk sneaks in through the broken windows, filtering the wreckage in hazy, antiquated light. A marker of time passing on this endless day. Somewhere, there is a sun burning through the hours, skating across the sky. It seems as much a myth as ghosts and hauntings and houses that swallow you whole, but Adrien's judgment of reality is always worse in here. Ceilings so high they seem endless. Rooms so cold they freeze time. When he turns away from his mother's portrait, the atelier is deafeningly empty. It's hollowed out, more than usual.

The room is a shattered ribcage. Desks are splintered to bits. Couches gutted, stuffing spilling out. Mannequins lie contorted, faceless casualties of the battle Adrien never fought. The only wars he ever saw in this room were waged with icy stares and pursed lips. Volleys for connection shattered against an impenetrable wall of apathy. There is something—a dog or a child or a ghost, something—living just within Adrien's skin. There is some undergrown thing in him that shrinks and whines in this room.

It's the same part of him that wants. The part that doesn't let go. The part that playacts a goodbye hug with a memory. Get up, he wants to scold himself. This is it. There is no one coming to save you.

The room is a mess. The room belongs to Adrien. Or Adrien belongs to the room. Either way, it's his to deal with. There is no one coming.

Adrien gets to work.
