A new adventure starts

jonathan, heartbroken and traumatised, gets to california. and he thinks it’s all so stupid, the sunshine and the way people talk. and he reckons he’ll just trudge along, like he always has, getting through the day and then getting home and curling up inside himself, wondering if it’s all supposed to be like this- what part of him was built wrong so he just can’t have fun like everybody else can. he figures he’s waiting to age out of being a teenager, maybe something he was never supposed to be. so he keeps his head down, and he’s polite, when argyle sits next to him in woodshop. because he’s always polite. and then for some reason, argyle just kind of barrels on. and in. to his life. and what’s strange is that, jonathan really likes the guy. he’s funny, and nice, and easy to talk to. and what’s really strange is that argyle seems to like jonathan too. he wonders what the catch is, and there just keeps on… not being one. they smoke up, and jonathan hears himself talking and thinks, oh god, this is the part where I come out of myself, and argyle realises he’s made a mistake but. argyle’s interested in the shit inside jonathan’s head. he doesn’t look bored, or pissed off. he doesn’t roll his eyes. he just listens to the stuff that jonathan really didn’t think anyone was ever going to care about. and he talks to him about it. he thinks jonathan’s funny. no-one thinks jonathan’s funny. and what’s strange, what’s really fucking strange, is that jonathan starts to have fun.

CODE RED! I THINK I’VE CRACKED THE SEASON 5 PLOT!! MIKE CAN MANIPULATE TIME IN THE UPSIDE DOWN—THE HAWKINS LAB WAS A TIME TRAVEL RESEARCH CENTER—AND BYLER HAS BEEN THE CANONICAL ENDING FROM THE BEGINNING

ST season 4 references time travel a bunch of times. El’s monologue mentions how emotions can make it speed up or slow down. She says everyone is a time traveler that way. There’s also all the imagery of clocks, especially the grandfather clock. Then the vision Vecna shows Nancy ends with a clock hand spinning backwards.

I started looking into time traveling media from the early 1980s and stumbled upon Voyagers! which aired on October 3, 1982. Will goes to the upside down on November 3, 1983, so a year and a month to the day.

Here’s Voyagers! opening narration:

The Omni is a pocket watch that flashes red (Vecna’s color) when history is wrong, and green when history is right. If you’re delusional like me, you’re thinking about how blue (mike) + yellow (will) = green. And how they’re going to be a “team” next season. “Looks like it’s up to us again.”

The center of the 4 gates in ST is the library.

A Voyage…Travel

Now here’s the main kid of the show, Jeffery, next to Mike:

Now remember Mike’s van monologue about feeling like everything that happened to him was sheer dumb luck? Well…

“It’s not destiny,” Mike said. But what if that’s a red herring?

What if the reason that the Upside down is stuck in November 1983, is because Mike manipulated time there? That’s why Nancy’s room has so much detail and the last entry was from November 3rd. She would have been at school when Mike found out, so there wouldn’t have been a new entry from November 4th. And ya’ll know how it’s a trope that little brothers read their sister’s diary?

Mike can manipulate time, in the upside down at least. That’s why even though it had been “a week” without water and food in the upside down—Will is still alive at the end of season 1!!!

That’s why Vecna has to wait for Mike to leave to kill. He knows Mike’s power. The first killing happens the night before Mike leaves, but Vecna knows that Mike has an early flight—that by the time it’s reported, Mike will be gone.

Now, since everything goes back to DnD, how did time travel come to be in The Forgotten Realms of Dungeons and Dragon? The goddess Mystra lent her powers to her daughters—The Seven Sisters.

In this case, The Upside Down is The Forgotten Realm and Mike is Mystra, the “Mother of All Magic”.

He either protected Will/loaned his power to Will subconsciously. Again, this would explain how Will survived down there without food or water—not much, if any, time had passed. The only thing poisoning him was the Upside Down air/spores + being wet/cold from being dragged through the quarry to the upside down.

Who is one of Mystra’s chosen one— Elminster of Shadowdale!!

And when Mystra leaves during ‘The Time of Troubles’, their powers are given to a wizard called Midnight…in S2, the bullies call Lucas “Midnight”!!!That’s why Max “died” for a couple of minutes but still survived. Lucas froze time for her, like Mike froze time for Will.

Speaking of that, who sought Mystra romantically? A young wizard artist (Azuth-Will) and then an all-seeing wizard (Savras-Eleven). Eventually Azuth (Will) wins out and becomes Mystra’s advisor, friend, and allegedly they shared “affections”.

Anyway Mystra came to power to fix the damage from “Karsus’ Folly” —Karsus, a wizard who essentially cast a spell that altered reality (The Upside Down and Vecna!) Karsus also tried to steal the powers of others (Henry trying to use El to refashion the world!).

Now to reference another 1982 time-traveling movie (Time-Rider)

After 4 seasons, can you answer what Hawkins Labs’ goal was? Why were they experimenting on people and trying to get them to expand their mind? In S2, Dr. Owens said discovering the upside down was a mistake—that’s because their real goal was time-travel.

Sure, it’s just like one of the many sleepovers you’ve had before

This is a feelings wheel. There are lots of different ones out there, this just one of them.

My therapist gave me a feelings wheel once to help me identify my emotions. We’d sort of worked our way backwards to that point, which is exactly what you do with the wheel itself!

It started with identifying that I had the emotional range of a small piece of dryer lint. The things I felt were shallow, distant, difficult to name or understand. I was pretty much always in a calm, pleasant demeanor, sometimes appearing melancholy. If you asked me how I was, I would respond that I was “okay” or “content.” (I thought those were the only virtuous things I could really be, and it never occurred to me that I might not actually be those things. I’d been them for so long, it felt kind of as much a part of me as my eye color is a part of me.) I said I was having those emotions even when talking about disturbing things in therapy, even when having big problems, even when exciting fun things were happening.

Now, obviously, I was having other emotions. My therapist and people close to me could still tell when I was having a hard time or an easier time. Even I myself could admit that I was “upset” and more often I would talk about how the situation was a sad or frustrating situation, but I didn’t claim those emotions as my own. (“It’s a really difficult thing to miss someone who has died, but I’m doing okay.”)

My friends said things like “you’re always so happy!” Or “you’re always cheerful” “you’re always nice.” Sometimes I even got feedback that my emotions seemed a bit insincere, my agreeableness seemed uncanny and automatic.

Anyway, I wasn’t experiencing emotional range and I had no idea how to access or feel my feelings without getting immediately totally overwhelmed and shutting down.

Enter: the feelings wheel, stage left.

Pick whatever is closest to your current emotion, in the largest options in the middle. Then work your way out, picking the closest emotions to your current emotion as you go.

At first when I did this, I would go to “happy” then to “content” (I didn’t have this exact wheel, but I had a similar one) and then beyond that I would always end up lost. None of the options seemed to fit. I would tell my therapist that I just felt “blank. None of these are how I feel.” I disengaged. So we would take a break and try again after a bit.

My feelings weren’t strong, it was hard for me to say that I felt “angry” but as we talked about what it’s like to be “annoyed” or “tense,” I could see how those applied to my feelings some days.

At some point things started to click a little bit more. Yeah, I was mad sometimes. Yeah, I was sad. Vulnerable, lonely, critical, confused, distant. I finally had words to describe what was going on, and permission to use those words to acknowledge my state. Because at the very root of it, I had thought it was a punishable thing to use those words and to have those feelings.

My entire life I’d been punished for displaying feelings. I have vivid memories of being spanked for laughing too loud. The adults in my world would literally spank a kid for crying until the kid stopped crying. So I eventually just shut down as much as I could, and I didn’t even notice I was doing it.

But here’s the news of the day:

None of the feelings on the feelings wheel are sinful to feel. None of them are punishable. None of them are wrong to have.

Anyway, I’m still working on that one, and now I’m also learning how to fuckin properly emote. I can laugh more easily now than I used to, still can’t make any sound when I cry, still can’t yell, still can’t dance, still seem to sit too still compared to my friends. Still so much work to do! But it’s progress, not perfection, right?
