Many important things to be said about “The General” but most importantly… somebody tell the ghost of Stanley Easterman that he’s got to clock in and start haunting this story again

Having some thoughts about the timing of everything in this update. None of this is coincidental.

Military theming will doubtlessly bring Stanley - and the reality of his suicide, the falseness of the belief that all of Easterman’s work at Sinyala was built on - to mind. Wernicke has always been utilised in Trials in order to show Easterman’s susceptibility to charismatic influence. Liliya’s effect on his mental state has led to the rapid escalation of his self-harming - the urges he feels to put himself in pain and danger remind me of him putting Franco’s loaded gun to his head, and in his mouth.

A point is being made about Easterman’s vulnerability.

~ the saints are models of purity and virtue. they are unwavering, confident, certain that they’re right. they’re doing the Right Thing, so they’re happy, even while being tortured / killed.

~ sometimes, they’re.

maybe more than happy. a sentiment that i’m sure you’ll recognize.

~ there is always, Always, someone doing the torturing. someone who is clearly and unequivocally in the wrong. people like their worlds to be in black and white.

~ there’s a bit of gender role reversal - the male saints are depicted as more passive, calmer, more like christ, while the female saints are stronger, more defiant, more active participants in the narrative. again, a sort of thing we’ve seen of liliya.

~ there’s. a lot of vaguely sexual stuff going on. lots of toplessness. lots of dramatic poses. get people to look. since christianity is all about purity and virtue, get people to not want to look, which only makes them think about it more. a lot of the same stuff easterman’s doing, which is (part of) why she’s so important to him.

but, most gut-wrenchingly of all:

~ christianity has this whole thing about virginity. the saints, and the female saints especially, are Always virgins. and, though they suffer all kinds of tortures, they will never, ever be raped. because that’s just not how the story goes.
