this is one of arora's saddest lines to me. obviously she has about ten million to pick from, but it just hits really hard when you consider that everyone (other than otto) in her life has left in some way shape or form.

arora is someone who longs for connections that she can never quite make. for all her dreams about anton, the time she calls him "dad" and not "father" moments before he tries to kill her, following in his footsteps as a chemist, she can't ever make anton love her.

she finds common ground with dr kusamura - and converses with him with otto completely out of the picture, which is likely not something that she gets to do often - but he betrays her.

the trial victims, who she sees as her "boys", get killed by reagents.

otto, in one voiceline, compares arora to tantalus from greek myth. tantalus' punishment for offending the gods is to be eternally thirsty and hungry, but all food and water moves just out of reach from him whenever he tries to nourish himself. arora experiences something similar but with emotional connection. she tries and tries and tries to quench her loneliness, but every time it seems like she has a connection with someone other than otto, it gets ripped away from her. this likely reinforces their codependency - otto, physically, is the one person who cannot abandon her. but as much as she cares about him, it isn't enough to stop her feeling lonely.

like tantalus, she is taunted forever with satiating a desire that can never be fulfilled. and for indulgent people like the twins - who revel in their desires, partaking in them no matter what society thinks - it's no wonder that arora is so depressed by her lack of connection with anyone other than otto. it's something she can't ever have, even when everything else she's told she can't do is done. she can be a chemist, she can be incestuous with her brother, she can defy her father. but she can't have friends, she can't have children, and she can't be accepted by others. it's all just out of reach for her.

#i think a lot a LOT about how kasamura is the one time she voiced disagreement w/ her brother.#and she says it in a language otto doesn’t speak.#otto only hears his name and perks up but she SAID she agreed with kasamura and NOT otto. that feels really important.#it’s not that the twins are always on the same page but actually voicing a disagreement would be…difficult. the emotions alone are too much #it’s also interesting she’s indirectly compared to pygmalion as well. since otto refers to himself as aphrodite in a voiceline.#pygmalion chooses to be celibate because he finds local women ‘immoral.’ similar to how arora finds the ‘common people’ so disgusting.#pygmalion makes and falls 'in love' with his own statue. a perfect woman he himself created. erik of course is masked with a fake face.#is that not a sign of loneliness? to be so disgusted with the world around you that you cover it? to be viewed as disgusting by the world?#falling in love with gross approximations and never something truly real? how intriguing to me also that these characters are NOT gods #AND BOTH CHARACTERS ARE MEN. because of course when can arora be the beautiful woman of a story? why not stab me more?#ANYWAYS.#arora kress #trials #txt #longpost #well i made it longer in the tags as i do. Is it really BAD to mention that the Blood Drive event has NOTHING to do with Easterman, and tracking hormonal changes has EVERYTHING to do with the Morphogenic Engine? A necessary part of the Engine process is hormone therapy, and all patient reports in Outlast will mention a specific hormone schedule for each patient.

We also know women are more strongly affected by the Engine given the phantom pregnancies, and due to Jeremy Blaire’s email, “Miscarried Profits.”

We do know Avellanos was in the hospital wing and IS hiding something. She always has been. I wonder if she was secretly drawing blood from Amelia to check out how much she’s been affected, given Amelia’s (and of course, Liliya’s) connection to egregore and Wernicke’s obsession with that concept. And Avellanos can’t just SAY that to Easterman, because Easterman doesn’t KNOW about the Engine. Yet. We might be reaching that critical point soon here.

My favorite detail in Boneyard is Amelia getting up, writing her letter on the wall to piss Easterman off, and then immediately going to make new glasses because she can’t see.
